My husband built a large sandbox for the kids and we have been using a tarp as a cover. After just a few months, the tarp is breaking apart and we need to come up with a new lid that will be easy to move, but still keep animals and excess rain out. Any suggestions?
I use a weather treated piece of particle board for mine, has held up for several years now, just treated it and then i used pool noodles (cut a slit and used glue) to cover the edges and prevent splinters and such, also provides a cushion if the kids bump into or fall on it, which of course they have.
My husband built a frame with PVC piping. It also has support in the middle and then attached the tarp to that. It's lasted two summers so far.
You could make a plywood frame(light weight) and use a oil cloth tarp stapled to it as a cover. They usually last a long time.
i don't know how much they cost, but my cousins use a swimming pool liner and weight it down around the edges.
I don't know how large it is but a swimming pool cover would be light weight and they don't crack as quickly. My neighbor decided to tape together large lawn/leaf bags for his and it worked out nicely for them.
Our neighbor just gave us a sandbox, and we are going to make a lid for it out of plywood with hinges on it. That way, when the lid is opened, the boys can use it as a ramp and drive their trucks down it.
