San Antonio Thoughts?

We will be going to San Antonio soon, to visit Sea World, the riverwalk, and who knows where else. It will be 2 adults and 2 boys (each 6 yrs old) Does anyone here in mamasworld have info or recommendations I could benefit from? Estimated travel will be between March 14th and 22nd, for 3 or 4 days / 2 or 3 nights... Budget is an issue of course, so I want to remain on the lower end of a nice vacation. I am thinking about a hotel close to the riverwalk, so it would be easy to walk in the evenings without having to mess with vehicles/parking... Also, should we do Sea World one day and Fiesta Texas the next? I am not to interested in educational reading museum type stuff. Any insights welcomed!

What can I do next?

Thanks to all that have replied! I am going very soon, and I have a 'plan' of action now! Sincerely, K.

K.,

San Antonio is my hometown. :D My husband is in the hotel business and says to try these hotels; although, they may be booked already:

Red Roof Riverwalk

StayBridge Suites Downtown

Best Western Sunset Suites

Hyatt Place Riverwalk

Yes, you will need two days for Sea World and Fiesta Texas. They both have water parks, but I don't know if they are open yet. If you don't want to pay the parking at Fiesta Texas, you can park at the shopping area across the highway and walk across the parking lot. Although, you may be so tired afterward, you may want to just park at the park. At Sea World, you HAVE to see the Viva Shamu Show. It is wonderful! Be sure to have your video/digital camera ready for some great night shots! I'd leave an ice chest in the car to go to at lunch. The food can be quite pricey for a family, and the lines can be really long, especially when you're hungry.

As far as restaurants, I do recommend Mi Tierra and La Margarita, but I've always had to wait; so, go early. There is another great restaurant Downtown called Las Piedras Negras. You'll have to drive to it, as it's not at the Riverwalk. There's a Rainforest Cafe on the Riverwalk, and if you can get to one, go to Chris Madrid's for a yummy burger.

There's an IMAX theater at the River Center Mall. The Children's Museum is really fun. My kids didn't want to leave, and the staff didn't rush them at closing time. They have so much for kids to do (without reading...lol), and it is right near the Alamo.

Anyway, I will let you know if I think of anything else. Have a great time!

-------By the way, when you're at Sea World, you might want to visit "Rudy's" (BBQ) across from Sea World. Delicious!

I am originally from a very small town 30 miles south of San Antonio so I know it pretty well. Anything close or on the River walk is going to be high on the high end. it is also spring break for most people in that area so you need to find something pretty quickly. If you need restaurant suggestions let me know. Sea World is definitely worth the money. Your kiddos will have a ball and be very worn out by the end of the day. Unless they are really into rides I don't think Fiesta Texas is worth it. However, I have never had a 6 year old and that might be the age they are into that kind of stuff. I know there is a height and weight requirement for most of the rides. They do have a nice firework display there every night. Also the zoo in San Antonio is also nice. Mi Tierras or La Margarita in the mexican square are fun places to eat. On te river Paesanos(italian), Rio Rio(mexican), and many others to choose from. There is a nice new mall called the Shops at La Cantera which is fairly close to Sea World. Hope this helps. I have had luck booking my hotels through travelocity or hotwire(you have to be a little more careful with this sight).
Have fun-S.

Hi K.! We go to S.A. often...i think you will be too tired if you do Sea World one day and Fiesta Texas the next. Definitely do Sea World, but Fiesta Texas is like Six Flags. The River Walk is fun to walk around and experience. Also, go to the "Market" area close to downtown...many good restaurants there and shops. Go to a restaurant there called, "Mi Tiera"...very popular...very good!
Have Fun! We will there this wkend, as well.

There are a lot of great inexpensive hotels closer to Sea World and Fiesta Texas. We have been to SA a few times and all the safe hotels in the downtown area are very expensive. If convenience is more important that cost, then stay downtown, if not I would look farther out. If you do the riverwalk/downtown after 5, parking is not expensive and many of the day parking lots are free at night. Also fun is the market, lots of shopping and fun stuff to look at, and there is a great mexican resteraunt there, can't remember the name.

I love S.A.. My husband and I took our 2 yr old last summer, however at the time we planned it there was not a hurricane on the way. lol. We made it in to S.A. the same time the strong rains and flooding did. It was so bad Sea world closed. Not much to do with a 2 yr old in doors. We did go to Rain Forest Cafe and had a blast there (go early line gets long) and we got to go to Sea World the next day and loved it. (I go every other summer) There is a McDonalds right on the outside of seaworld to help with cost (as stated before food is HIGH). For hotals we stayed at the Emily Morgan and used Priceline. I believe it was $80 a night. I don't know if you have used them before but you can go on there and pick if you want a 4* or a 5* hotal and then put in the price you are willing to pay and if one of the hotals picks it up then you have a great hotel at a good price. Only draw back is you can only specify if you want 4 or 5 * not the name and I don't believe you can have refunds if you can't go. Have fun.
