Safe Flashlight for Bedtime?

My son is almost 3 years old and suddenly afraid of the dark. We put a nightlight in his room, and it's made bedtime a lot easier. But since the weather got colder & I put heavier blankets on his bed, he doesn't want to cover up. Finally I got him to explain to me why - he said his feet are afraid because it's too dark under the covers! I worry about him getting too cold sleeping without any blankets, so we're trying to find some way to solve this. We gave him a glow stick one night, which he stuck down by his feet and slept great under the covers all night, but those things only last 1 day! I'm not comfortable with him having a regular flashlight under the blankets because I'm afraid it will overheat. My husband found a rechargeable LED flashlight that we've been letting him use, but it's so bright that we usually sneak in & shut it off after he falls asleep.

Is there something out there made for kids that is rechargeable or solar powered, that doesn't get too hot? We're willing to try anything!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Since I posted my question my son has destroyed our rechargeable flashlight. I was able to find a Tyke Light Jr at Walmart, but it takes batteries, so I think I might order the original Tyke Light online. I think it will be perfect, and seems like it will hold up better. We never did find any glow in the dark socks, I think he would have loved that idea too. Thanks for all the ideas!

Try this:
http://www.getmobi.com/tykelight_glomate.php

It's a rechargable nightlight that can be carried around as a flashlight.

I got my daughter a Little Tikes barking dog flashlight. Super cool.
http://www.littletikes.com/toys/mitts-glowin-animal-flash...
Also, I got a button night-light that projects stars on the ceiling. Way too cool. It's one of those button lights that you can stick anywhere, takes batteries. I can't find it on the web. It was in Walmart for 2 bucks where they sell light bulbs. But, here are some fun nightlights:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobi-Tyke-Light-Jr.-Night-Light...
My daughter will sometimes play with the flashlight so I have to go in and tell her I will take away the flashlight if she doesn't go to sleep. Then, if it continues (I hear her singing/talking to her doll in bed), I will take away the night-light if she doesn't go to sleep. I only had to take away the night-light one time. Now the reminder of "go to sleep or else" does the trick. Good luck!

I recommend that you tell you little boy that you will leave his door open (a little crack so the light will shine in) and you and dad will be looking in on him and hear him call if he needs you....unless your room is far from his.

A night light usually does the trick....if not in your case you might consider trying a timed lamp that turns out about 30 - 45 mins after he gets into bed.

I was afraid of the dark as a small child...the door left open worked well for me and I was REALLY afraid of the dark. Besides the stuffed animal and favorite pillow or blanket, I say LESS is MORE!

Blessings......

You could have him wear socks to bed...that would keep his feet warm.
I remember having something that would absorb the light during the day and glow at night.
I have a small flashlight that takes two AA batteries and it never seems to get hot. Something like that would probably work.
I also have a flashlight that has a "flasher " on it. It is just a tiny red dot that flashes regularly. In the case of a power outage, I can find the flashlight next to my bed. Something like that might reasure the boy.
Our doc told us to rent "Monsters, Inc." and watch it together as a family, but I never got around to it.

I would buy something xmas'y that you can plug in and put under his bed. They sell those cubes that are all lighted up. not a fire hazzard becaues it doesnt get that hot. or just put in a some decorative lights around his bed that can kind of shine under the blankets...cheaper than replacing the batteries to a flashlight.
Good luck

We bought this flashlight for my son (LifeGear LED Glow Stick Flashlight ) http://www.target.com/GLOW-STICK-FLASHLIGHT-FLASHER/dp/B0...
...it's like the glow sticks, but in flash light form. They are $5 and sold everywhere. Target, Walmart. Walgreens. My son doesn't tuck it under the covers or anything, but it gets used every night almost all night and we have never noticed it getting hot. It gets hung on a thumbtack near our bed. You get one battery replacement per flashlight online for free. But this flashlight has lasted nightly use for several months. He also likes that it acts like a "regular" flashlight for trips to the bathroom. The whistle was initially a problem, so I hot glued to cap on, until he got over the temptation of blowing it in bed. :)

I always let my children sleep in footed pj blanket sleepers so they would be less likely to be cold in our big old house, and it worked very well.

Yeah, the Mobi Tykelight is great and sounds exactly what you're looking for. They sell it on Amazon too, and I've found one in Walmart once as well.

It's not hot at all because it's a LED but also isn't super bright. My daughter uses it every night and loves it. It's also great for when your kids are old enough to go to the potty by themselves at night, since they can carry it with them in order to see without having to find the light switch.

Glow Worm he can cuddle with. Althought I don't think it stays lit all night
http://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-06777-Playskool-Lullaby-Glow...

There's a seahorse one at Walmart and Target that I have seen too.

That MOBI thing looks AWESOME - probably your best bet. It says it's on backorder on the link from Missy. Try amazon.com or order it from mobi asap so you don't have to wait any longer.

Google Tykelight. I've seen these at walmart and target, my son has to have it pitch black so we don't have one but i think it may be what your looking for. It doesn't get hot and is made for little ones to take to bed with them.

Good luck!

My son last year asked Santa for a flash light. I got him a wind up flash light from Wal Mart it was around $13.00. It does not need batteries. It does not get hot. If he wakes up during the night he can wind it and the light will come back on. I am not sure how long the light lasts but it is a while. My son will be 4 in just a few weeks and still has the flash light.
Good luck.

Have him wear socks to bed and tell him that the socks will keep his feet company and they won't be afraid of the dark any more. Bonus is he will stay warm. We had this problem with our now 11 year old son and it worked. Good luck.

Now that everyone has halloween stuff on sale, I'd look around for glow-in-the-dark socks. Then his feet have light, and socks to help keep them warm.

You could always buy a small space heater and use it to warm his room if he will not keep covers on. That will help eliminate the flashlight usage. We have used twinkle lights in our kids room. They are bright enough to light the room but not over powering. By the way my daughter has Pink LED lights and my son has blue and green LED. So they are low on electricity. Hope that helps a little. Good luck!
