We just went on a mini-vacation with my mother in her RV. It was a great time, except for the lack of AC at night. Since we got back I have started to look into the RV's as a way to get a family vacation. We have 3 children under the age of 4. If they don't get naps they are a lot of FUN. (wink wink) I find the theme parks to be so overwelming for them as well as me. I have read lots of PRO's of RVing but what are the CON's? Has any one found this to be better then other vacations?

What can I do next?

I love RV'ing, camping etc. I don't see any con's other than where to go!!! But it does depend on what type of RV you get.........a pull one or one that is drivable...... there are pros and cons to both.........I would think you would want a pull one since you have the kids and wouldn't want to drive the big one all over to get groceries and such.

You have RV parks everywhere now, including Disney, so it's like taking your own little home with you and not paying or staying in hotels...........the down side, if it breaks down, you cook most of the time, you clean up too......saves money tho.......

Good Luck on your decision and take care.

We have a 18 ft RV.. We actually purchased it off of ebay.. It is in great condition.. We purchased it from a family that had 3 small children, but they were out growing it, so they purchased a 24 ft..

I am NOT a camper, so I like the potty, shower, running water, air, heat, kitchen.. We always have a good time.. We keep it packed so that when we want to go anywhere we just add food and our clothes.

We did not purchase a drivable one on purpose because if it broke down, you would be stuck with no transportation.. A pull along, you could leave at a shop, but still have transportation..

Have fun planning..

Downfalls.. You need a vehicle that can pull it. Find out how it has to be stored.. In our city, you may not have it where it can be seen from the street so you either have to build a fence around it or find storage for it..

We love our travel trailer. It sleeps 10 officially, but that would be a bit tight. It has a bunk house in the back with 4 bunk beds (we used to put 2 littles in one bed and the other little in the other bottom bunk), and a queen size bed at the other end. We have full AC/heat, a shower/toilet, fridge, stove/oven, microwave, sink, sofa, table. They can fit a lot in those little RVs! Anyway, we love it, the kids LOVE it, it's so much fun. And, you can take them anywhere. Even if we are going to an event, we can take it and have the use of our own bathroom, a place to lay the littles down (or the big ones!), a reprieve from the heat, etc. I highly recommend them. Just be sure to research brands/types, etc. If you choose a travel trailer, make sure your vehicle can tow it well enough. It can ruin your engine if it isn't rated for the weight.

The do make AC for RVs. My family had a camper growing up and I have fond memories of our family vacations. We currently have a pop-up.

To answer your questions...

A few of the cons, if you have one that you drive ... it doesn't get good gas milage, after you get to your destination, you kind of stuck there. If you have a camper you tow, you need to have a vehicle that is capable of towing it. Something to keep in mind, as your children grow, they will no longer be able to fit in those bunks or xl twin beds, so a camper that sleeps 6, will become a camper that sleeps 4. There's also quite a bit of work involved with getting it ready for winter storage, and set up each spring. Also, camp grounds can be expensive, I've seen them up to $70 a night, of course that includes full hook up and lots of activities.

As far as being better than other vacations, that depends on what your wants, needs and budget are. My husbands BFF idea of a vacation is a cabin secluded in the woods next to a lake, his wife's is a 5 star hotel in Europe.

My friend just bought an RV... The only cons she's told me is that she has to pay to park it at a storage place because her home-owners association doesn't allow it in their neighborhood..... Also- if you find an RV park, that will take care of all of the electrical and sewage issues.......

Other than that- they can be a bit of a gas guzzler.... Otherwise, it may be a great solution for your kids. Good luck!

We've never had an RV, but always had a travel trailer when we were growing up. Some pros of having a trailer vs. RV are that you can have 1 family vehicle that either pulls the trailer or is just your regular (albeit big) car. We always had Suburbans. When you get to where you are going you can unhook the trailer and still have a car to drive around where ever you are. Gas mileage tends to be a little bit better with the trailer/car combo, esp if you get an Airstream which is much more aerodynamic than an RV.

A possible pro for the RV is the ability to move around a bit more while you are driving-- though I wouldn't due to safety issues.

Which ever you get, I think you will really like it. We went EVERYWHERE In our trailer, and got to see so much of the country. Having a kitchen to prepare meals saves so much money, and most campgrounds with full hookups are under $50/night. It is a great way to travel with kids. If you go to Disney, stay at Fort Wilderness-- the campground is almost as much fun as the parks are!
