I was wondering if any moms can give some advice on different medicines and alternative medical/herbal treatments for rosacea. I would like to get some different views! Thank you!

Have you tried Altopalm? It works great on my son's facial eczema and it says its for rosacea as well. I buy it at www.skinstore.com . I think this product is a miracle after many prescriptions Altopalm worked.

I, too, have rosacea. I suggest you see a dermatologist. I see Dr Steven Pedro in south Arlington. I started seeing him about 8 years ago in my early 30s when my lifelong facial "rosiness" sprouted a few pimple-like places. He diagnosed me with rosacea.

Dr Pedro is a compounding physician, so prepare yourself to use special compounded stuff if you see him. He changed my entire face cleaning regime and emphasized the importance of both systemic measures (has me on Nature Made Fish Oil & just added Nature Made B-6) as well as topical ones.

"Photo-protection" with UVA & UVB everyday is one of the most important things he emphasized. He currently has me using a daily Neutrogena product with SPF 45 & "helioplex." This follows my antibacterial face cleaning with Cetaphil each morning. He has changed my exact routine a few times through the years depending on how my face was doing. I was planning to start a family when I started seeing him, so he avoided giving me antibiotics, but I know that can be a systemic measure used for flare-ups. I get light treatments in his office and he's frozen off a few sun spots that were looking questionable through the years as well.

If you call the helpline of your insurance company or a health info line, you will be told that rosacea is a systemic problem and to see a dermatologist. Some basic measures that can help also are avoiding spicy foods and temperature extremes such as very hot showers or very hot coffee or tea to drink.

Good luck to you. Get treatment before it worsens, because it will.

What I take now: Boericke and Tafel Sulphur30X or Nelson's Sulphur. Both are homeopathic pills that you melt under your tongue. I took them at first, as the bottle prescribed, but now only use when needed in cycles...but rarely.

My story: I was "diagnosed" with rosacea almost 3 years ago. It came on after being pregnant...and it came on quick. I had horrible redness and swollen cysts all over my face...and my face hurt so bad, it was unbelievable. I have a history of cystic acne, but this was nothing like that. After 6 months of self-treatment, two separate dermatologists told me I would be on antibiotics and "sulpha" drugs, for the rest of my life and have to eat a restricted diet. Since I hardly ever take meds and already eat organic and healthy, that did not sit well with me at all. But all my old 'Natural' acne tricks were not working. So, in desperation, I went on the dr's plan. And, the drugs did work: alternating antibiotic and "sulpha" drugs.

However, when I ran out of antiboitic one day and couldn't get to the refill done right away, I noticed that the sulphur drug worked well by itself. Then, as continued to research alternative medicines more, I noticed that sulphur was an ingredient in many of them. So, I bought the Nelson's (above) and started taking it as prescribed on the bottle. Intially, there's a build up, taking more pills throughout the day at first and leveling off. I stayed on my own high dose plan for 1 month, then leveled off. I also started taking high doses of live acidolpholis to reestablish my good gut bacteria after the antibiotics(which can be kinda expensive). And IT WORKED! Unbelievable!

I still have reddness now and then...and once in a while the cysts, but nothing bad, at all. When I do, I ramp up the sulphur pills and, within a few days, things start settling down. I also use Answers from Nature skin care line, available on line: simple, natural ingrediants with MSM (sulphur again!) and not super expensive. (note: I don't use the whole line...too much time...I use wash, toner and moisturizer and clay mask (leaving the mask dabbed on overnight on any "blemishs/cysts). I did buy other products, just never seem to have/make time to use them. I also, don't eat a restricted diet.

Also, the best part of all: the sulphur pills are under $5 per bottle and are available at most health food store. For the inflammation when needed, I use Traumeel by Heel, also homeopathic. It's more expensive, but I haven't needed to buy it in a while. I also don't take big doses of acidolpholis anymore...just my homemade cultured yogurt.

General timeline: 6 months of trying my old acne tricks, two 1/2 refills of the prescriptions, but I was off all the docter drugs within 3 months and have been off for 1.5 years. (so much for being on the meds for the "rest of my life"!)

Hope this helps: I know how bad this "condition" makes a girl feel! Good luck. Not everything works for every "body"...or your sensibilities. I hope you find what works for you.

My dermatologist diagnosed me with cystic rosacea several years ago. I also had some adult acne, so he gave me a low dosage anti-biotic to take at the onset of a flare-up and a clear, odorless cream to use on the actual lesion.

I no longer have to use the antibiotic. The cream is called Metrogel. I put it on at night and there is a noticeable difference in the morning. The swelling is down and after several treatments, the blemish is gone.

You can wear makeup over the Metrogel as well.

It's really no biggy, so don't freak. After several years, my breakouts have decreased and I rarely need the Metrogel.

I'm an Irish redhead who was diagnosed with rosacea a few years ago. The wonder drug of all is Oracea. It's AMAZING and was the only thing that worked completely for me. It's the first and only pill approved by the FDA for rosacea, so that was a huge deal for me. I also had finacea and metrogel ointments, but oracea is a pill that I took once a day and it cleared everything up, from the redness to the bumps. LOVED it... but then I got preggers and had to stop taking it beause of possible side effects. Baby girl is 3 months old now, and it can't be used while breastfeeding either. During my pregnancy, the rosacea cleared up a bit but I would have some flareups.
