My 5 yr.old daughter has ringworm on her calf of her leg. I am very curious if anyone knows where this comes from or how you get it? She's been wearing pants for a few months now obviously because of the weather so her leg hasn't been exposed to anything and noone we know has it. She doesn't go anywhere but school and home. She's not currently in any sports or anything. I'm applying a anti fungal atheletes cream to the area which seems to be helping.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok I never knew ring worm could come from animals.. I am thinking this is probaly where it came from. She has been around some stray cats at the neighbors. Hmmm...no more stray cats for us. I also made her a dr. appt today to get her a prescription because I'm not sure the cream I have been using is the best thing. So thanks everyone I learned quite a bit. Now I just have to make sure I don't catch this from her.

Hi B.,
Strangely enough, I had ringworm years ago in Mexico... all of us in the house got it because it is so contagious. We determined that it came from dogs. I thought I had escaped it, but discovered one on the back of my neck weeks after I had left that house! Maybe she was exposed during the fall or even summer.
The Mexican cure for ringworm is to apply iodine to the site. Another folk remedy is to apply raw garlic!
I applied antifungal cream and it worked great.
Hope that helps!

If there has been any exposure to animals, cats or dogs that is one place to get it. Otherwise, in this day who really knows what kinds of germs are on things we touch in stores or even at work. I agree that if it doesn't go away to consult your doctor. It may be a good idea to still contact your doctor so they can possibly document a ring worm case for research or studies or whatever.

It is fungal and can be transmitted by just about anything. Its likes to stay warm so if she touched something, then itched her leg, it can start as easy as that. You have to be very persisitent with the cream, I bought the generic Target brand and it can take a good 4-6 weeks for it to go away. Not covering it is better...

I don't think that it takes much to get ring worm. It can pass form animals to humans and from humans to objects to other humans. I got ring worm on my upper leg. I also am very clean and had not been to any new places. My Dr assured me that it is one of those things that can come from any where. I probably got my from touching a shopping cart. Your little girl could have got it at school. If it doesn't go away with anti-fungal cream you can get a stronger one from your Dr. Once I went to the Dr my went away very quickly.
