Returning Already Worn Cloths??

I bought a pair of shorts (4 pairs total) on sunday. One pair in my usual size seemed to fit well but after wearing them throughout the day they stretched out so much that I can pull them on without unbuttoning them. They will not stay up. I threw the tags away but I have the receipt. They were $40 bucks so I would like to exchange them. Do stores typically do that? I don't want to go argue a lost cause. Thanks

What can I do next?

I really think it totally depends on the store. There are stores that brag up the fact that they will take back anything, anytime, with no hassles. I think Kohls is one of them... I'd say it's definitely worth asking. No one wants to waste $40 on shorts that stretch to a completely bigger size in one wear.

I would! It's not fair to pay that much and have the size change so much. I wouldn't say that you wore them unless they asked. If they ask and have an issue with it, I would argue with them because it's NOT right to pay that much and have the size change so much.

If there is a problem with the quality, most stores will take them back. Make sure to describe the issue.

I bought two pairs of identical pants in two different colors once. I washed them both exactly the same. One pair came out 3 inches shorter! The store replaced them, no problem.

Find the store online and read the return policy. If it's going to be a pain, call the manager and complain. Clothes should not change that much in one day. They need to make an irate call to their vendor or manufacturer.

Usually no, but in this case I would definitely try. The garment wasn't up the the standards you expected. I would not spend $40 on a pair of shorts that is all stretched out after one wear. To me it's as if they were defective in some way. I was once able to return a pair of shoes to Target because the Velcro stopped sticking after 3 days of wear, they asked, I told them and they were fine with my explanation.
Good luck.

If I paid $40 for a pair of shorts and they were that out of shape by the end of the day I would definitely go in and see what they say.

No, I don't believe anyone would take the shorts back worn. I may be wrong.

P.S. If you happened to buy them at Kohls, I just heard a radio commercial saying they take back worn clothes, if the quality is not up to standard.

Definitely worth a try. I bought a pair of $20 shorts from Target and wore them for the first time on our Florida vacation. I probably wore them 3 times and then discovered a hole in the crotch (before returning home and before washing them!) When we got home I took them right back to the store and Target took them, no questions asked. I don't even think I had the receipt - they looked it up on my charge card or something like that. Good luck!

Go ahead and see if they can be returned. I have a pair of capris I wil be taking back. After wearing for a while, I have to keep pulling them up. I bought them at JC Penney and they have a customer satisfaction guarantee so I know they will take them back. I once returned something to a smaller store after wearing a couple times and the store clerk said there were enought returns they were returning the stock to the maker because the material was not holding shape well.

Several years ago, I bought an outfit at a department store. It fit well, and I wore it twice. But once I washed it (according to the label's instructions), it shrank to an unwearable size, from a large to almost a small. I took it back and showed the store, they took another of the same off the rack and compared sizes, and once they saw how much it shrank, they refunded my money. So if you haven't washed them yet, don't. Take them back as they are, and let the store compare the difference. The worst they can tell you is no, in which case you're no worse off than you are now! Good luck!

Return them. I had the same issue with capri's from GAP. It took explaining , talking with many people and having an example of what pants look like not streched out. I did not get my money back but I did get a store credit. If the store has a 1 800 number call them to find out what policy they follow and make sure you take notes and names . Good Luck.

I agree that it totally depends on the store. Most bigger stores will.

Call to find out. I've known of stores to do it, but that could just be the people vs. the policy. Best wishes.
*Edited to add... You should also look on their site to see if there are any reviews that state others have experienced the same issue.

No. If you don't have the tags, and they look like you washed and wore them-most likely they won't take them back. If its a brand that is exclusive to the store you bought them from, it is possible they will give you a store credit for the current price of the merchandise. But if other stores sell that brand---you may go away with nothing. GL

Totally yes to Macy's, Nordstroms (the KING of costumer service!), Banana Republic, Ann Taylor. I've done it at all these stores and they apologize.

If the fabric or something about the shorts is defective then by all means take them back to get a refund.

But if they were stretch denim or something like that then you kind of bought them knowing they would stretch out.

The store basically has to throw them away and take the loss. It really annoys me when I have some new garment and something is wrong with it.

I bought a really nice red dress with a huge white collar one time. I wore it a few times and then took it to the dry cleaners to get it cleaned. They tested the colorfastness of it and refused to take it. The fabric color rubbed off on to the rag with cleaning fluid on it. If they cleaned it every other garment in the drum would be dyed red. They could not clean it.

I took it back to the store and they let me exchange it for something else. I still have that dress and have had it cleaned many many times. It is one of my favorites.

On the other hand, I had a friend who would go to Target every day or every other day and buy a garment, wear it out that night to the clubs, leave the tags in it, then take it back the next day or two to exchange it saying it didn't fit when she tried it on at home. That was so wrong...so many people do this and stores are getting more and more where they won't take back anything that is worn. I hope they will work with you on this though.

It really depends on the store, some do take back defective merchandise; the Gap does, but Old Navy doesn't (anymore). Read the back of the receipt, it should have the return policy on it. Good Luck, that's a bummer. It has happened to me too.
