My 23 year old son needs to make a resume, my computer is on it's last leg, so we can't do one on it. Is there a specific form we can get or, just how can we do this?, the last resume I had was from about 15 years ago, so, I know things have changed. He hasn't really had many jobs, but, has been in the military...PLEASE any ideas? thanks, J.

It is free and you can do it in the library if needed.
I know you are his mother but at 23 he really should be using his own mind and resources to handle his business (resume writing and job finding). Steer him in the direction of the local unemployment office and the library and nothing more. Encourage his growth, development and independence from you.
I'm not trying to be offensive but his generation is a little lacking in self motivation and we parents doing more than we should is probably why.

I can't see the other responses, but if nobody mentioned it yet, if your son was in the military he should be able to use their resources to help find a job, career counseling, resume writing, etc.

You can go to Kinkos or Office Max or one of those places that allows you to use one of their computers and put it together.
Not everyone is equipped to put a resume together. There are a couple of things he can do.
One, get the resume form off of your computer before it dies (resume wizard in MS Word...there is also one similar in Works).
Two, go to the library. I believe they have a computer section where he can type up a paper/resume.
Three, call a County Agency. Here in Kern County, we use places like Love, Inc., and call 211. They are helps for people who need food, housing, etc., but they also help people in getting info for jobs, i.d., etc. They may know where your son can go.
Lastly, if you have a career services center, he should be able to do it there for a small fee. They also help in job assistance, etc.
....A last minute thought-- do you have any friends or family that would let him use their computer for an hour or so to put his resume together? Once done, he should get himself an e-mail- like google's gmail or yahoo mail. They are free and he can check them from the library regularly and post his resume online from there. I suggest going to the library because you can do a resume on line and save it to your e-mail...

I agree with Kimberly - at that age he should be composing his own resume and maybe have you review/spell/grammar check. As someone who has been a part of the hiring process and in management I would not hire someone who had his Mom put his resume together. If he did get called in for an interview are you going to go with him? Just saying...
Hi, do suggest to your son that he head for the public library. They should have computers he can use for free, and the librarians can help him find some materials--both print and on-line-- on how to put together a resume.
Many public libraries are putting together materials to help job-seekers right now, because so many people are looking.

I would have him go to a local library and use their computers to make out the resume'. You should be able to find forms online, or at least a site that gives guidelines for how to make a good resume'.

Most counties have some type of job search office (in my county it's called One Stop). Since he's been in the military he can also contact the VA as they also will assist him in creating his resume. Both of these offices should help him in resume creation as well as job search. The One Stop offices have computers where job seekers can work on their resumes and look for jobs. Good luck!
You certainly don't have to have him pay for a resume. I've never had one professionally written and am doing OK for myself all these years.
You can go to the library use the computers there, build a resume on a service like CareerBuilder.com, Monster.com, etc. You can also look at resume books, but honestly, there's really no format that is universally acceptable. My resume is difficult to get to 3 pages - other people can still use a 1 page.
Have him register on services like job boards that have tips and have people who will review the resume for free. Also have him get on sites like Linkedin.com. 1/5 people there are recruiters, and they'll search keywords to find people. So that's a really important consideration. Also joining groups, participating in discussions, adding relevant/professional commentary is really important.
Take advantage of all the free resources out there, and he'll do just fine.
Check your local library. They have computers there and they often offer free courses on how to write a resume and how to job search in general.
Another possibility would be to check the local unemployment office. They also offer help to job seekers.
A third possibility would be to check the website of your local community college. They probably also offer some services for job seekers.
