Red Dye

I posted a request last week about night terrors and took my son in to the pediatrician for his well child today. The doctor said that there is a link between night terrors and dyes, particularly red dye. My son has never liked anything but water and apple juice. We recently started giving him Crystal light fruit punch. The night terrors did start after he started drinking this and I really had no idea there was a correlation. No real question this time, other than I had never heard that before and thought I would share.

What can I do next?

My niece has had allergic reactions to Red Dye #40, where she completely avoided it for a while. The doctor did mention to my sister that sometimes children can react to that through their behavior, as well. Very interesting... Oh, and amazing to know the things that contain Red Dye #40....Crescent Rolls to name one of the oddest!! She recently began introducing it again in her diet (in small, controlled amounts) and does notice in the behavior a connection between them.

So, her experience and what she was told certainly supports what you wrote. I had never heard that until she told me.

ADHD runs in my family and we found out that Red dye set my nephew off terribly. He would literally climb the walls. My sister had to start reading the ingredients of everything, including medicine. You would be surprised what all has red dye in it. He's now in college and reads the ingredients his self - he knows what ingesting red dye does to his system. It's evil stuff (lol).

I did not know it was linked to night terrors but when I was a girl scout co leader one of the girl was allergic to red dye. She would get REALLY bad and out of control if she had it.

Wow.. thanks for sharing. That doesn't surprise me at all. I am pretty picky about high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeters. When I cut them out of my diet, I can tell now a difference in my mood if I have them.

I'm not surprised. My daughter's hands would break out in a rash if she washed them w/ blue or green soap (restaurant soap) for a while.
