Recovery After Hysterectomy

Hi moms,
I had a hysterectomy, removed my right ovary and lifted my bladder 9 days ago. I am still with the bladder catheter after two attempts for my bladder to work. I go back to the doctor tomorrow to again try to get rid of it. I have been "trainning" my bladder by clipping the catheter (per doctor's indications) since yesterday, every 2-3 hours. Has anyone had a similar experience recovering from this kind of surgery? what else can I do to finally get rid of the catheter? I am sooo fed up with it!
Thanks for your suggestions.

What can I do next?

I 2nd www.hystersisters.com

I feel like I had one of the absolute best recoveries possible so I can't advise you.

The site helped me learn a lot about hysterectomy and what to possible expect. I had complete hysterectomey (no bladder work) in 2001 and have been on HRT patch ever since. I have never felt or looked better in my life.

I do know catheters are not fun. When I was pregnant my daughter was sitting right on mine and I had to wear a catheter for a couple of weeks until she moved.

Best wishes to you and now that the catheter is out maybe you will have a speedy success.

Hi,
I hope you are healing quickly. I had a total hysterectomy about 16 years ago in Richardson by Dr. Kuhne. My surgery was lengthy and my recovery was long. I did not have a catheter at all. I am not sure what to recommend but wanted to encourage you to rest and take it easy as your body is healing from your major surgery. I rested for 6 weeks after my surgery not able to lift things, clean the house or even drive. It seemed like a very long time for me to heal and it took 6 months before I regained most of my strength and 1 year until I felt I had my full strength back.

I hope all is better as soon as possible!

There is a great website for recovery help. www. hystersisters.com. I had a hystorectomy a year ago in Jan. I did not have work on my bladder so I do not know how to advise you, but I can promise you will find alot of support on the website.

Keep in mind by 6 months you will feel great!!

Hello PR,

12.5 years ago I had a hysterectomy and a bladder suspension...YUCK!!! I was in so much pain, couldn't lift a thing and I feel your pain regarding the catheter. However, I didn't have to retrain my bladder; after 6 weeks I went back to the surgeon and the catheter was removed. My problem was with having a bowl movement...the worse excruciating pain I have ever had!!!!! And, the bladder suspension didn't work and I still have the same problem when I run, sneeze or laugh hard...leakage...darn!!!! But on the flip side, I really like it that I no longer have menstrual cycles....I'm good for vacation at anytime!

Good luck,
C.

I am sorry you are having these problems. Everyone's body heals and reacts at its own pace. Don't get too discouraged. What does the doc say about the lengthy catheter time?

I had a complete hysterectomy/bladder suspension 12 years ago. I had to wear the catheter home for about two days and then he took it out in his office.

I don't have any real advice except to make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids and I would suggest plenty of cranberry juice too, to help ward off any possible urinary tract/bladder infections.

Hi If I remember just right, it took my mom about 2 wks to retrain her bladder. Then she had trouble actually sitting and voiding. She had to semi-stand (like you don't want to sit on toilet) and she found it easier to go that way. She eventually trained it to be able to go sitting and not semi-standing. You might try that and see if it makes it any easier. Good Luck

It sounds like they are doing some bladder training on you. I know having a catheter stinks...hang in there and they are taking you down the right path. I know, easy for me to say, huh?? Good luck!!
