We're from Texas and hardly get any snow but the winter is still cold.

Since we're spending a lot of time outside I am looking for REALLY warm (lined) winter boots for the boys and me.....

Any suggestions ??? Preferably brands that you own....

I like the UGG type boots, but are they really as warm as they look ???

I know the boys will have good luck finding warm (insulated) boots at Bass Pro shops, Cabela's or REI. They might have boots for the ladies, too. LL Bean and Land's End have the same type products, but I want to see it, feel it, wear it, etc.

For the kids...Academy if they still have them or Lands' End. I have a pair of Bare Traps instead of Uggs, couldn't justify spending that much money on something like that down here. It's not cold enough for long enough. And honestly I still mostly wear them when we go north for Christmas.

REAL UGGs -or- *any* other kind of REAL sheerling boots are, yes, absolutely as warm as they look. They're heavenly. I've been wearing them since the 80's (they've gone in an out of fashion FOUR times since then, I will still buy them, and am quite brand loyal to UGG. In large part because they last about 5 years a pair with regular washing.

Which is another great thing about UGG. They get tossed in the washer and dryer. Yep. Gotta love that. You just take a suede brush to them on the outside afterward if you want them looking new... or just wear them for a few weeks. When you buy them new... they should feel tight on your feet/legs... because the wool compresses to match your foot/leg shape (if you buy them loose, they only get looser). Tossing them in the wash "resets" them, so they'll feel all tight again for about a week. When I wash mine I just use shampoo or mane/tail shampoo. Squirt some in each boot... rub it around with my hand a little, fill up the washing machine and toss em in.

In large part because they DO go in and out of fashion so much I buy 1 kind, and 1 kind only. Black or tan knee length with the seam around the top (aka no wool sticking out). If you care about fashion, just wear them under your pants when they're out of style. If you don't... no worries.

BTW... they're meant to be worn barefoot. And they are *not* waterproof in any real way. I avoid getting them waterproofed because they don't "breathe" as well afterwards, and are more difficult to wash.

FAKE sheerling is kinda / so-so warm, and very flimsy. My mum bought me a pair of fake sheerling boots awhile back. They started out great, and a month in had lost their warm/ become all matted/ couldn't be washed without falling apart.

Sorels are great. We've got about 3 feet of snow around here now and they still keep my feet warm (and I'm out at least two times per day in the snow letting the chickens in and out). They're not crazy expensive either.

People like uggs a lot, but they are not for all weather (even rain).

Oh, and Kamik boots are very good for the kids, but they do tend to run a little narrow.

We have Bogs brand boots, for our entire family including our 3 year old. I love them because they are waterproof but not just "snow" boots, and can be worn after the winter months. My MIL&FIL have a farm with lots of acres and animals and they are great for that too. We just bought a new pair for our son, they are expensive but totally worth it.

Have you tried Land's End? All of their winter wear is warmth rated. They tell you the temperatures that each particular garment (or boots) will keep you warm.

I love their things. My son goes to Michigan every winter, but, really dislikes bulky coats, so I just buy him one from Land's End that isn't bulky, but that I know will keep him warm. Also, if you lose a mitten, they will replace it at no charge!

Warm, waterproof boots are a must in the midwest. Between my kids, husband and me, we own Land's End outdoor boots (completely waterproof) and Columbia winter boots (also waterproof). Waterproof is one of the primary keys to warmth.

Hi,

We just moved to Texas and luckily have our winter boots still from the Northeast! I understand what you are saying about the cold. You could try LL Bean or Lands End. I have/had them. They have good quality and if you don't like them or if the fall apart (which I highly doubt) you can return them. UGGS are good, but if you or your kids feet sweat and smell it will be hard to get that out. I have actually washed my daughters and let air dry but after she wears them a few times, they stink again.

I hope this helps!

i love love love my uggs, soooo warm and cozy. as far as im concerned, besides seeing my kids play in the snow, they are the only good part of winter. i live in them. however, they are not waterproof. i have some serious north face boots for serious winter weather. they are great for real ice snow hiking etc, but not so much for every day because they are really stiff and heavy. i just bought a pair of bear paws? at dsw, comfy like uggs, though not quite as awesome, definitely better looking, and way cheaper. for the kids i usually get lands end, love their boots, easy on and off for the kids, and you can do really well with their sales and overstocks. they are great for winter weather. however i bought those imitation uggs for my daughter at target and she loves them, she wears them every day if its not wet out.

if you don't get much snow you really don't need sorell boots. they're great for snow but not for every day use.
We own sorell (for snow), lands end (for snow and every day use). i also own a pair of stuart weitzman boots with fur inside (very warm). so these are the brands i recommend.

I second Sorels. They are warm, reasonably priced, durable and waterproof.

They are not necessarily a boot that would make it to the runway, but they are functional as all get out.
