hello all, i just wondered if anyone has had a problem with box elder bugs. there seem to be a lot around my patio door and i keep catching one or two a day inside the house in random places. i read on line that i should try to spray the exterior with something but wasn't sure what to get. any suggestions? thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

We ended up using ChemWise pest control. They are home and enviro friendly. We had them spary once and the bugs were gone for 3 years!. Box elders can live in cedar wood chips and the red wood chips too. Get rid of those it might cut down your population for next year. Hope you get it resolved.

We had a horrible problem with them last year. I actually broke down and called an exterminator. It worked...whatever they did!

Good luck!

Terminex once told me to spray the house with dish soap and water mixture. I used one of those sprayer containers (an old plant feeder) filled with dish soap than hook up the the hose line where the water mixes in the container and hoses the house down. It really cut down the number of bugs. I probably hosed the area for 15 minutes or so. I still have some but I can now walk in my backyard without getting attacked by them or them falling inside everytime I open the back door. They are nasty things!

BugMax365 did the trick for us. Our house was SWARMED (it literally looked like something from a horror movie). I don't know if it's the color of the house, all the neighbors just had a few. We'd been shopping all day and arrived to thousands. I wouldn't even get out of the van. Given, I'm from Louisiana and had never even heard of box elder bugs. The people at ACE said it would work. My husband sprayed the house and within a couple of hrs, they started dropping. About a week later, he sprayed again...it's been bug free ever since!

My company recently moved to Elgin in a brand new building. We had the city inspector come by to give us occupancy and we asked him how to get rid of them. His answer was that boxelder bugs will lay eggs in lighting fixtures, so they suggested to clean them out every few weeks or so, otherwise they will keep hatching and you'll get them every few months (and years). Beyond that, I don't know much more.

My sister had a problem with these, and she did some type of yogurt formula which killed them. Maybe you can find it online?

I used to have this problem every year until I found out it was because of the female boxelder tree I had in my front yard.....Do you live in Lisle by any chance the town is filled with them....lol Ok so what did I do I had the tree cut down and no more box elder bugs on my house....they have all moved to the guy next door who has about 20 of them lining the side of his yard....lol

Oh also I have tried all the suggestions below they are a waste of time and they always come back. I did however find a spray solution in a green bottle at Kmart a couple years back it was some flying insect killer spray...seemed to work longer than all the rest of them.
