Rash, Rash, Rash!!!!!

Where do I begin? I took Bella into the pediatrician's office for what I thought was sever diaper rash. Her doctor sent me home with medication for a yeast infection and Thrush. We used Monistat and Nystatin for a week, it didn't work. So I took her back to the doctor's office, they then sent me home Lotrimon and another dose of Nystatin. Another week went by, went back to the Dr's. office and they say that she doesn't have a diaper rash nor a yeast infection, it is now Exzema in the diaper area. The next week Bella got really sick with a fever for 4 days and then that turned into another rash all over her body: Roseola!!!!! She still has a rash in the diaper area that has started to travel down her leg and above her belly button. I've used Hydrocortizone, Eucerin cremes & lotions, Dove soap and I've switched between Babies 'R Us Diapers and Pampers, I've stopped using baby wipes, use Dreft exclusively and I am at my wits end!!!!! I am in tears every time I change her diaper and see her scratching. I feel like a horrible mom because my poor baby is suffering, and scratching and i can't seem to get it right. I don't know what else to do. And I am not entirely convinced that it is Exzema because the rash isn't really dry.

I nurse Bella and supplement with Infamil Soy. She's been on a staedy diet of Oatmeal, Gerber Pears, Gerber applesauce, mashed potatoes, Gerber peas, fresh bananas since she was 6 months old.

i have racked a lot of money in co-payments and nothing has been solved. Please, please, please help me and my sweet little baby girl!

So What Happened?

I just want to thank everyone who took the time to e-mail me with such great advice , suggestions, and beautiful words of encouragement. I can't tell you what a lift it was to my spirit and an absolute God-send for Bella and I. I really, really appreciate it!

Bella is doing soooooo much better. I took her to the doctor again this past Wednesday....The Thrush is gone. I switched to a different diaper, Nature Babycare- non-chlorine wipes and diapers. Within hours of switching brands, her skin began to clear up. It never even crossed my mind that diapers had any particular chemicals in them, and how much damage a diaper could cause. I stopped using Dreft and switched to Planet hypoallergenic liquid detergent, and I double rinse the (100% cotton) clothes. I also started using the Aveeno baby products. Bella's skin is back to normal and it looks perfect!!!!!! It is amazing how skin repairs itself and so quickly when you fix the problem. It is really fascinating,

Thank you so much for your support I can't tell you how much it has meant to me! Mamasource is just a wonderful community!!! I can always count on you all!!!!!!

Thank you again, and again, and again!!!! And thank you for encouraging me to "Go Green!"

Wishing you a beautiful day filled with many blessings!!!

Love,
K.

When my daughter was a baby, she had a terrible rash. My pediatrician said that she saw that rash with Dreft more often than anything else. She told me to switch to Tide. I did and the rash went away. My younger daughter got a rash from disposible diapers. You also should consider that she could have an allergy to soy.

MANY babies are sensitive to soy, before it becomes a true allergy. Also, you might want to try getting PB8 from a local healthfood store and open a capsule and dump 1/2 of it into her food and then the other 1/2 later. It's an AMAZING probiotic. If this doesn't work, then e-mail me offlist and I have another idea for you, but try this first.

I found this lotion that has done WONDERS for my son with SEVERE eczema. It is Grandma M's Homemade Lotion. We found it at a dayspa in Idaho. I keep promoting her here because we tried everything (short of a powerful steriod cream on a regular basis) & this is the only thing that worked.

It is $15 per jar, but this stuff worked like a miracle.

The owner (Christina) was thinking of not staying in business so she shut down her website, but you can call her to order. She is in Idaho. Her number is ###-###-####.

Good luck.

wow! i am so sorry to hear about your poor little girl. My son suffered from REALLY bad diaper rashes, yeast and not yeast. We did the monistat and the nistatin etc... what ended up really working for me was colloidal silver. You can get it at mothers market, sprouts, henrys, (a market like that) i bought a spray bottle and sprayed it on every time i changed him (and changed him often) any kind of rash he had would be gone by the third day! that stuff works wonders! please give it a try, it will NOT hurt her. Let me know if you have any other questions. You can rub lavender essential oil on it too, that will sooth the area if irritated.
Good luck

It is heart breaking to have our babies suffer like this. Mine are now 12 and 14 but I have been through all of that before. Take a look at what she is eating first - I'd take away all dairy and soy from your diet and her's. Then you need to seriously look at vaccines. I have had it happen with me and I know thousands of other families that have had things like this, and worse, happen because of the ingredients in the vaccines causing the immune system to over react.

About skin care products, when my daugther had the same things going on with the severe ezcema, including all over her face as well, we started using a product called Sensaria Natural Bodycare and now I am a representative for it. It helped with her skin problems and allergies, helped and got rid of my acne, and my husband's dry skin and dandruff.
www.mysensaria.com/J.

Another thing is that there are many alternatives for natural paths of getting rid of yeast. My source to refer everyone having these kinds of problems is to go to the www.tacanow.org website and look there. With Autism and other immune disorders, there is a connection of the gut and the brain. This site has already created the wheel in finding resources and ways to fix these problems. You can always email me directly too:o)

By eliminating the things causing these flareups, you will see the problem go away. But, you need to be careful about future problems of asthma and allergies if you don't remove the toxins and the cause.

Hi K.,
It sounds like allergies to me. May I suggest you eliminate one food per week to see if there are any changes, including changing out her formula? Additionally, you may want to eliminate things from your diet to see if you are passing something along in your breast milk. Common allergens are: milk products, nuts, wheat and corn. Also, you may want to try cloth diapers. They get wet faster requiring that they be changed more frequently. This inhibits growth of bacteria, etc. in the diaper which prevents diaper rash. I've heard great things about Bum Genius.

What I would do in your case is get off all dairy products since you are nursing, remove the soy products from her diet as well as the oatmeal, oatmeal can cause allergies like this and if it is boxed Gerber oatmeal it has many preservatives in it too.

Go to Henry's Market or on line at www.carlsonlabs.com and purchase Carlson for Kids DHA, start putting it in her juice, water or mix it in her cereal, you should also be taking it since you are nursing. I would try using rice cereal in place of the oatmeal, it is less harsh on their bodies. The reason I tell you to get the fish oils is that the rash is actually due to something on the inside and topical creams are only going to mask the problem, not solve it and then that usually does not even work. It must be approached by treating the inside out. I would also get her on some Acidophilus, you can purchase the Jr. capsules and break it open and put 1/2 a capsule a day in food or drinks, this will help her healthy bacteria return to normal and help her fight off the fungus. If the Acidophilus gives her diarhea at all, back it down to a 1/4 of the capsule a day. Just remember that it needs to be refrigerated.

Let her run around diaperless as much as possible, I know it can get frustrating, but hang in there, it will clear up if treated properly. The more air that gets to the area the better. Don't let her soak too much in the tub either, even water keeping it moist is not good at this point.

Best of luck to you, I will be praying for healing for your sweet baby girl!!

Oh I know the frustration! My baby has had a rash on and off for months. I know it's from teething. When he teeths, the acids that are generated cause a total body melt-down.

I am not a dr. so this advise is from experience.

My best friend is a homeopathic dr. and she put my baby on "SULPHER" "30c". You can buy it at the health food store (Mother's). Go to the homeopathic section and ask someone to help you find it. You want to get a small dish and dilute the tablets in purified water. Once they are diluted you want to give her the water by spoon, just a tsp. will work. You can try this 4 times a day. Also, keep away from acidic foods like tomato. Start feeding her Organic foods only including formulas, and use purified water with everything. In addition, you can buy Calandula Diaper Cream, which sooths the sore areas. And get her "Children's Probiotic" it come in powder form and add it to every bottle with formula. This will help build her immune system and give her the "good bacteria".
All of this you can purchase at Mother's.

I also went online to www.mobuherbals.com and got him the S.O.S Balm. It's an antibacterial-Antifungal balm that has (tea tree oil) in it, which is a natural anti-fungal ingredient. That seemed to work as well.

Keep in mind; the rash is the first signs of internal stuff going on, and if it's not addressed properly, you will see other symptoms like a fever. It's the body speaking to you. When you cover up the symptom with the med's the dr. has given you, you run the risk of not addressing what's really going on.

Also, when in Mother's try to pick up "Homeopathic Self-Care" by Robert Ullman. This is a great starter book and will give you insight to how homeopathic remedies work.
This philosophy and method has helped my baby so much.

I hope this was helpful, please contact me if you have any other questions.

So sorry you are dealing with this. I can't type all I want to because I have dual carpel tunnel and cubital tunnel, but I will just say this. I battled thrush for 2 and a half months, it is NASTY stuff! I went through 3 coursed of Nystatin on my girl, and I got it too, on my NIpples! Can you say ouch! I found the "miracle" cure from a cousin of mine with two girls. It may seem expensive, but I know you would pay 10X's over to make it go away. It is all natural and it is called Jarro-dophilus. You can pick it up at Henry's and probably Mother's as well. I got mine at Henry's though. It is refrigerated and it comes in a pill and powder. Get the powder. You only add an 1/8 of a tsp to your babies milk once a day. You take it as well because you may not have it now, but you can get it if you are breast feeding. It won't hurt you anyway. All it is are 6 of the "good" bacterias naturally found in the body like accidophilus and stuff found in yogurt as well. I can't tell you how happy I was to find this stuff. Sounds like I sell it or something! LOL After my poor girls battle with thrush was won in ONE WEEK!!!! I will tell any, and everyone about this stuff! I really hope it works for you. Try it, it can't hurt! Like I said I can't write all I want to say, but I even saw dermatologists for myself on this before this simple solution worked! Doctors are to wrapped up in pharmaceuticals to look for the simple natural cures sometimes. (I am not a holistic freak or anything, just felt so saved by this stuff I could not believe not ONE doctor even mentioned it!) Good luck and I really hope it works for you. If you want to p.m. me, feel free to. I know how frustating and probably MAD you are at this point. (((((((((()))))))))) Forgot to tell you the price, I believe it was $22.00, but it last forever. I dealt with this when she was 4 months old and she is 10 months old and I still have it. I take it when I am on antibiotics or something to prevent any infections. Good luck.

Oh honey, don't feel like a bad Momma! You're doing everything you know to do for you're darling little Bella. Your doctors should be ashamed that they haven't referred you to a dermatologist by now. I would ask for a referral to a dermatologist and quit giving her soy. Soy can be pretty allergenic. I saw that others had suggested using Aveeno which may help soothe her itching. Another thing I would highly suggest is "Silver" you can get it from a health food store and possibly at Whole Foods. I was told I got Thrush and they gave me some antibiotic and it wouldn't go away. Well my homeopath told me it was strep in my breast and gave me this silver gel and it went right away. So now I use it on my daughter when she gets a rash. I wish I had more answers for you!
Best wishes to you and Bella!

My daughter is extremely allergic to apples. If she has anything with even a bite of apple in it her poor little bottom breaks out in the worst, most painful looking diaper rash I have ever seen...it was breaking my heart until I figured it out. Also be careful when you give juices. Most of the juice blends have apple juice as a base. Good luck!

Have you tried chlorine free diapers? Once I put my DD in them, she stopped having really bad diaper rashes. Now she has the occasional flare up if we don't give her a bath at least every other day.

I would also limit the amount of sweets, including juice that she has until it clears up as sugar increases the amount of yeast in the body.

For my daughter, any of the regular store bought diapers would give her a rash. It's the chemicals that they put into the diaper.

Hi K.!

I know what you are feeling, helpless! Don't blame yourself though, because it's a mother's natural instinct to help her young and being proactive is a great start!

Looks like you've already been given lots of good advice.
Process of elimination is a great start to see if it is an allergic reaction, it could be one thing or a few things so remember to remove one thing at a time so you'll know which it might be.

I went through a similar situation with my son and here are a few things that helped me...

My infant son suffered from eczema and "contact dermatitis". He was very allergic to caustic ingredients, including most laundry detergents (including Dreft) and a cheap preservative called Quaternium-15. Sadly, it is in most J&J baby products and many other popular names out there. So please CHECK OUT THE INGREDIENTS and if your product has it in it....please stop using it right away!

This website is great, click below to see what types of products have it. There are even pics of rashes to show you what it can do to the skin, so you can compare your babies rashe. It might save you a trip to the dermatologist.
http://dermnetnz.org/dermatitis/quaternium-allergy.html

I was also introduced to Melaleuca ~ The Wellness Company, and I can honestly say that a combination of their products have helped clear up my son's skin condition. Completely gone! We had suffered through cortizone creams (steroids) presciption ointments and I just didn't feel comfortable putting strong oinments on his baby skin. I tried a lot of OTC lotions too, sounds like the same ones you've tried.

If it is eczema, you can watch this short clip and see if this is something you'd want to try:
http://about.melaleuca.com/2c_Renew_Lotion.html

I've learned so much! Our skin is like a sponge, so anything it comes in contact with can cause "contact dermatitis" in sensitive individuals. Including food, laundry detergents, shampoos, body wash, lotion, perfume, cleaning supplies and floor cleaners that your baby may walk or crawl around. I was able to replace all these types of items and more with Melaleuca.

This can help you learn about non-cautic cleaners:
http://about.melaleuca.com/2b_Ecosense_Cleaners.html

Best wishes to you and hang in there!

www.SaferIsBetter.com/LisaZ and you can even get some free products when you order, I did!!

:) Hope this is helpful information for you, I know you have had a ton of responses!

could it be an allergy? My son has had excema since 3 months, He didn't have any rash in the diaper area, but we found that he was allergic to soy, peanuts-including peas and green beans, in addition Gluten - so no oatmeal.

When did this rash begin, did it coincide with any new foods? Have you tried to cut things out of your diet? I had to illiminate different foods to notice. I also gave my baby time in the tub to soak.

I hope this helps.. I am definitly not a doctor, but honestly this is what i went though.

Hi K.: I am so sorry that you are going through all of this. If you have changed formulas and you dont think it is the soy. I am not sure if it is an allergy because it sounds like your baby is eating non-allergenic foods. So if it is not an allergy - what I can tell you that has incredibly helped my baby and lots of other babies I know is Arbonne. There are so many chemicals and fragrances etc in other products that it irritates babies tremendously. I can give you more details if you want, but the products have so helped my babies!! probably because there are no dyes, frangrances, harmful chemicals, mineral oil /petroleum etc so it heals the skin and allows the body's natural healing processes to work. Try and STOP giving her Oatmeal. Oatmeal is allergenic to some people/children.

For example: my Mom is allergic to Oatmeal... it causes rashes and eczema in her.... different places on her body, and itching. And it takes a long time for it to go away. Even 1 bite will create an eruption in my Mom.

It could be that something she is eating is exacerbating her skin condition. Likely.

Also, do not give her anything "citrus." This is also allergenic... and for my Mom too, and causes the same symptoms in my Mom as the Oatmeal does.

Try making a paste of Baking Soda and water, and apply that to her.

ALSO, remember that if you use too much Hydrocortizone cream (ie: for more than several days), it can irritate the skin. It is not recommended for prolonged use in babies. Their skin is very tender.

Also, let her air out without a diaper. You don't want fungus coming into play either. Make sure her skin irritation/rash does not get infected. ALSO make sure that if she scratches, that her fingernails do not create scratches on her skin... and thereby making things worse. My Son was itching his scrotum once, and he got scratched there (like a paper cut) AND it was very painful. Babies fingernails are very thin and can scratch.

ALSO, perhaps give her some yogurt, the kind with the good bacteria in it, to get her system back in balance.... with antibiotics...it can often put the digestive system out of balance... (because it kills the good and bad bacteria) and thus, creating yeast infections sometimes. This happens with adults or children.

I hope this helps.
Take care,
Susan

Hi, I am D. a 54 yr old grandma. I have a 3 1/2 yr old granddaughter. So, I hear ya. Our girl has super sensitve skin. My suggestion is, get some TRIPLE PASTE. May not get rid of it, but it is soothing. Try some Calendula oil. You can get this at a health food store. Vitamin e oil too. I use organic laundry soap from Trader Joe's. It has Lavender oil in it. My nutrition book under Psoriasis says any fatty acid oil is soothing, and healing. Here are oils listed: FLAX SEED, BORAGE, PRIMROSE, ULTIMATE OIL from NATURES SECRET. Also a topical of zinc oinment.
I know you mentioned excema, but nothing found in my book and it's similar to psoriasis.
This could also be an allergic reaction so cutting out wipes is a good idea.
Here are health food stores in Whittier;
HERBIE'S on Whittier Blvd and Painter Ave.
NATURE WAY east of 1st Ave. almost to La Habra on Whittier Blvd. Then in Fullerton and Yorba Linda is HENRY's

I sympathize with you K.. My son had a bad rash that spread from his truck to his extremities when he was a little over 3 months old. We went to our pedetrician, she and the other doctor in the office, diagnosed it as some type of ringworm and had us use OTC Lotrimine (medication that is used for athletics foot). Well that made it worse! I went to a dermatologist, she hadn't seen anything like it before, but did prescribe another type of lotion and had us use unscented detergent and soap, I had to stop eating and drinking diary. Well the rash did go away about a month or so later, we never really figured out why he broke out, we think it may have been a lotion that we had started using. My husband and I were so frustrated with our pediatrician because she was just guessing at what it was. And unfortunately, other mom's I've spoken to, say the same thing, if the doctor doesn't know, they will try different remedies, which is what it sounds like your doctor did. My only suggestion is to take your daughter to a pediatric dermatologist. They should be able to help you out better than your pediatrician, since skin is their specialty. Good luck and I hope Bella feels better soon!

Hi K.~

It sounds like Bella is allergic to something. Perhaps you should stop the soy. I would have her allergy tested right away. It isn't a pleasant test, but a little while of discomfort is better than weeks of pain and itching. Poor baby... If you are interested, I wll give you the name of my daughter's doctor. He wrote the Allergies and Asthma For Dummies book. He is the top doctor in this field. The office is wonderful and I absolutely trust them! He is located in Mission Viejo, CA. I would call them and tell them you NEED to get her in there immediately.

My daughter suffers from eczema. She's had it since she was an infant. She will be 6 on Sat. Over the years, one can imagine the amount of money we've spent on creams, lotions, ointments... you name it... from her pediatricians to many, many dermatologists. NOTHING worked! On this website, I kept reading about Melaleuca products. I looked into it and tried them on my daughter. She has NOT had an itching problem or a rash since I started using the stuff. If you don't already know someone whom you can buy this through, I can help you. I only signed up so I could get the preferred customer price for the products- so I am not out here trying to get a sale. I do want Bella to heal though. So, please, if you need help, message me. They will refund all your money if you don't like it. I thank God for it! My daughter's eczema was so bad the head of her school came up to me scared for my daughter because she thought she had MRSA!!! So imagine how horrible her skin was! This oil and cream has been a miracle and it doesn't hurt her skin or burn like all the other medications.

I'm thinking her food is the issue, so please contact me for our doctor's info. He's the best out there!

All my healing thoughts for Bella!

My son had a mysterous rash for months as well. They first thought it was a fungal infection because it was only on his bum, but I thought it was more likely an allergy to something. I cut dairy out of my diet, which helped. Maybe you could request a blood test for allergies? It could be the soy or potatoes (more likely soy)... Also, my doctor had me try hydrocortizone cream ( I like Aveeno - no sodium lauryl sulfate - i am allergic) and Aquaphor for babies - the stuff is amazing. He is now clear and I don't feel as rotten anymore. Good luck, because I know how it is!

I had a similar experience with my daughter when she was little. I stopped all baby wipes, lotions, and liquid soaps. I started using Johnson's baby bar soap and A&D ointment around the affected diaper area. I tried to leave her with cloth diapers at home until her bottom got better.I would also pack wet paper towels in a ziploc to wipe her bottom. She had some rash on her arm, eyelids and neck which I would use a little hydrocortizone cream after bathing and as needed. This worked really well for her. She still has a bit of exzema on one arm and sometimes on her neck but it is under control. She still uses the Johnson's Baby Bar Soap and she's now 13yrs old!
Good luck!

You should have your daughter tested for Mersa. It is a staph infection that often is mistaken for severe diaper rash. My nephew had it as a newborn and was put on major antibiotics to get rid of it. It is quite common lately but not a lot of doctors test for it.

Good luck!

!Poor baby! My daughter had severe rashes when she was a baby. We used Luvs diapers, no wipes or product at all, which helped to dry it all out. Nystatin helped our situation when combined wi1th antibiotics. We battled with that over and over. It would work, clear it all up and then it would come back a few months later and we'd go through it all again. It's like her system was out of whack and she was susceptible to staff and strep infections.

Hi K.,
You may want to start over with the food. Just start out with feeding her one thing for 3-5 days, then introduce another. Babies change and she might be allergic to something now that she wasn't just a month ago. I know it sounds strange but that's what happened to my daughter. She had this horrible blister like rash and it was an allergic reaction to a food. We removed the food and the rash was gone. A couple months went by and we re-introduced that same food with no reaction.
I hope this helps.

Sorry about your daughter's rash. I would take her to the dermatologist to get it checked out. My son got a rash when he was kept in the hospital under lights for jaundice, but after that we put Aquaphor on his skin every time we change his diaper. We put it anywhere the diaper touches and we have not had a rash since. We swear by that stuff. You can get it at Babies R Us or Target.

Hang in there! My 4 month old has had a recurring rash all over her body and my PED told me it was a food allergy (I nurse exclusively). He gave me a list stating 90% of what babies are allergic to, to try taking it out of my/her diet: soy, wheat, eggs, dairy, fish/shellfish, and peanuts. I've tried eliminating combinations of the foods, and also one at a time for a few days. The culprit was dairy.

He also told me that if taking out those foods would be too hard for me, I could also try only feeding her a rice based formula for a week (and pump/store my milk during that time). I also used the baby Aveeno oatmeal lotion for her eczema and it work pretty well. I hope this helps....

I know you have a ton of wonderful suggestions, but I thought I would give you one more. I have eczema and I had to stop using Dreft for my son's clothes and switch to All Free Clear. Also, your daughter should definately be tested for food allergies. There is a skin condition called Dermatitis Herpeformitis (sp?) that usually comes out in the buttox area and lower legs. The main cause of this is a wheat allergy or gluten intollerance. Not many doctors diagnose this correctly because it looks like eczema. Don't give up - the more you hound your doctor to have your daughter tested for everything under the sun, the quicker he will realize you mean business and want your daughter diagnosed correctly. Make sure to keep the area well lubricated with something natural like vaseline or Aquaphor (which I swear by with my eczema). Also, skip the wipes and just use a wash cloth or wet cotton balls. Most importantly: DON'T GIVE UP AND DON'T LOOSE FAITH.

First off, don't blame yourself...

Exzema can often times be caused by allergies an eliminated when the allergen is eliminated.

She could actually have 'all of the above' chain reaction type thing...maybe it was a rash to begin with, but an allergic reaction to one or many of the medications, etc...and then coincedently Roseola in there too...

IF IT WERE ME: I would take a day and stop the creams, just give her a bath in luke warm clear water, then lay out a TON of blankets or towels to cover a large area and let her 'air out' and be naked. If you can do it outside even better. Then I would set the timer and just regardless if dirty, change the diaper very often. Then after 24 hours of medication free and diaper free time has passed, I would just choose the cream I felt gave the best results and try it very lightly (small amount) and see what happens...if the rash is better, great, if it gets worse, don't use that cream...

I have found that the times my son or daughter had rashes that were raw and bleeding...after 24 hours of no cream, just LOTS of diaper changes and a few luke warm baths (I gave a bath at each pee or poop change) and if possible be outside naked for a while...the rash healed AMAZINGLY fast. I hope you have the same results!!!

AND IMPORTANT...you do want to keep an eye on the rash and make sure your doc knows if it starts to cover the trunk of her body...Stevens Johnson (sp?) is a rash that can be fatal and can be caused by an allergic reaction...VERY UNLIKELY, but you should always arm yourself with knowledge :)

Hello - My preemie twin boys were in the NICU for 3 1/2 months and they both developed severe diaper rash from constant diarrhea. They tried different creams and ointments, and let them go without a diaper to keep the area dry but after 2 weeks it kept getting worse and was bleeding. They finally called a Wound Specialist which recommended a spray called Cavilon (no sting Barrier Film). They sprayed this over the rash and let it dry. Then on top they placed a mixture called Butt Paste (mix equal parts of Desitin, Vitamin A&D, and Dibucaine Ointment 1%). I think the Cavilon spray made the difference because it created a thin film which protected the rash area. Their diaper rash improved within 2-3 days. It's probably best to check with your doctor to make sure your baby is not allergic to any of these products. But I highly recommend getting the Cavilon Spray and at least using Desitin even if you can't get the other products. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

My daughter had a rash in her diaper area as an infant. Her regular doctor said it was diaper rash and that I was not changing her often enough. He recommended Desitin ointment. The rash got worse and worse - open sores. I finally took her to a pediatrician who took one look at it and told me that it was a fungus infection. He prescribed a fungiside ointment and I had to boil her diapers (this was 44 years ago). The rash cleared up; however, it left scars. Perhaps your baby has the same thing. I suggest you try another pediatrician.

It could be an allergy. This happened to my sister at the age of five months. First they thought it was thrush, then they thought it was roseola. Finally after allergy testing, they found out she was allergic to the baby formula my mom was using. To this day, (18 years old), she cannot have a drop of soy and she is also allergic to some of the antibiotics they initially gave her for the thrush.
My advice is to see an allergist. You may also try a dermatologist.

Both of my sons had bad cases of eczema. It is not always a "dry" rash, in fact in the creases of their legs and other moist areas it would get almost "oozy" for lack of a better word. I learned that eczema is almost always caused by an underlying food allergy (Dr's do NOT always agree with this, I had one dermatologist tell me that this was a myth!!) but when you start researching you will find this out. The number one food allergy that is related to eczema is dairy. There could be small amounts in the Oatmeal? or unfortunately even what you are eating coming thru your breastmilk. This was the case with my second son and he had such bad rashes he would scratch and dig himself raw. I had to go on an "elimination diet" and took all of the dairy product out of my diet and it absolutely worked for him!! His rashes went away!! So that is the first thing I would think of. Of course, it could be another food or even and environmental trigger for your daughter. I would start with an allergist. It's a bummer to have to put your baby thru tests but to get the answers it is worth it! Use Dreft, double rinse your laundry, NO fabric softener or dryer sheets (not even the allergy free ones). I would try to let her have a bare bottom as often as possible. Let her lay on a thick towel. My Dr recommended LESS bathing rather than more. We use Aveeno products. When they were babies I would use Aveeno Infant bath with oatmeal? I can't remember exactly what it is called but it comes in a box with 3 packets inside and it is a thick oatmeal bath that they soak in and it relieves their skin and helps it to heal. I have so been thru this rash mystery thing and the feeling of helplessness when you can't figure it out! Please contact me if you want to "talk" more about it, I'd be happy to share more as this post is already LONG enough! Sorry. Best of luck to you and Bella! Janet

Please try Bag Balm. I know, it was originally made for cows, but let me tell you it works. My 16 month old and my 6 month old both got diaper rashes that were blistered and bleeding at the same time. This is what I used and it cleared both of them up in the second day. There was a major difference the first day. My ped told me to use it for 2 weeks after the skin looks clear, because only the outside skin would be healed and the inside would still be healing. It is truly amazing. You do have to use it with every diaper change and you need to put it on thick, like layering a cake, so that there is still some on when you go to change the next diaper. Also, the diaper area needs air. So, if possible, let your daughter go without a diaper for 5-10 minutes in between changes.

Best of luck!

Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time with these rashes. I had similar experiences with my daughter. It is very tough on both of you. I found several reasons for my daughters rashes, but they obviously might be different for your daughter. I was told first by the dermatologist to get a water treatment system for our house. That the hard water could and does cause a lot of skin irritation in baby's.... We found a inexpensive on at Costco. This has helped a great deal. Also, my daughter had milk allergies that took too long to figure out. This caused her severe ear infections and exzema as well. I also found that Arbonne's Baby Care line works really well. It could be a food allergy/sensitivity. Allergies can develop over time and don't always occur the first or second time a food is introduced. Read your ingredient labels looking for wheat starch, modified food starch or anything else that's not a pure known food. Try eliminating one food for a week to see if conditions improves. You can try reintroducing the food later. Soy and peas are in the same food group; my daughter developed allergies to these over time (they are also related to peanuts, a major food allergen). If you are nursing, eliminate the same foods from your diet. My son was allergic to wheat, even when I was the one who ate it while nursing. He developed a bad diaper rash. We had a diaper service that delivered freshly laundered diapers. I took these, tossed them in my washer with a 1/4 cup of white vinegar then dried in the dryer without a dryer sheet or softener. This helped, too.

Top that with Caldasene protective powder (also at Longs). You will be amazed.. really! Also, there's a new medication that can be prescribed called Vusion. My daughter had this "rash" kind of thing on chin near her lip and this cleared it up really quick. Our son was and is still allergic to oatmeal and cheerios, etc.. I am hoping that it is an allergy so that you can get it under control with out anymore medication. My friends children are severly allergic and they did simple tests to find out. It turns out that eggs, dairy and many others are VERY common allergens. Write down what you are eating and keep a journal so that you can tell the specialist. I will try to get the number of the doctor that my friend and many others use for their families. Have you tried to use cloth diapers? Some babies can't tolerate disposable diapers. One of our sons started to have a persistent rash when he was about 14 months. We changed to cloth diapers and it cleared up the rash. Also, it might be an allergy to something she eats regularly. Try to eliminate one food for a few days and see whether it gets better, then the next and so on (you get the idea). Lukewarm baths are always soothing and you can give them as often as you want. After a bath let her go naked for a little while (if possible).

This is what I would try. Go out and purchase a product called Domboro. It is in a white box with blue letters. When you get home mix one of the packets with a 16 oz glass of water. Then either with paper towels or wash clothes sock them with the water solution. Put them in your baby's diaper and leave them there for 15 minutes. Once the 15 minutes is over take the diaper off and blow dry her bottom on low heat for a couple of minutes. Then apply the baby powder made from 100% cornstarch. Do the treatment at least twice a day, three times if you can, and apply the powder with each diaper change. You should see an improvement within 24 hours. If there is no improvement then it is something different then a severe diaper rash.

I have used this treatment many times and have recommended it to many parents. If you need more information or have questions please do not hesitate to email me at ____@____.com luck with your little girl and getting her better.

K. that is just so sad to hear about not only your daughters pain, but your pain of trying to find a solution to the problem. I use Arbonne's ABC line on my kids since my son too as eczema. It is the only stuff that works and not a lot of pediatricians know about this product. Some of the products that you have mentioned are made with mineral oil and that acts as an occlusive barrier, which cannot penetrate the skin. I know you are at your wits end with this, but I firmly believe in this product I am using as well as countless other moms who use this product as well and have seen a significant difference. Should you choose not to try this line stay away from products that have mineral oil. Mineral oil is a form of petroleum. You can google it if you like. Trust me. That breaks my heart to hear your little one is suffering so! It must be so heart wrenching and frustrating to have racked your brain & re-visited the doctor's office. You may want to test and see if the food is the cause. Soy, oats, peas... You may also want to add more foods that have greater nutrient content. Broccoli is rich in vitamin C which is immune building. I recommend the book "Super Baby Food" which gives you some great recipes for a super healthy baby. Gerber has additives. None of the additives, however, would trigger Roseola because it is a virus. In fact 30% of all infants get it.

Here's an article on Roseola:
http://www.alternativedr.com/roseola.htm

As far as eczema goes, I have some info on some more naturally based, inexpensive things you can use without slathering on hormonal creams and such. My friend used them when her son broke out in eczema all over his body. It cleared up within a week. The lotion rocks! Meanwhile, check out www.saferisbetter.com/kimcales

I look forward to hearing the good news of your daughter's health!

Wow, it does sound like it's certainly not a diaper rash anymore. I am wondering what the doctor has said about this spreading rash. Have they cultured it? I would get her to a board certified dermatologist ASAP.

My next thought is to stop using the Dreft. Switch to Tide Free or another detergent that is free of dyes and perfumes. Double rinse all her clothes, towels, etc. She could be allergic to something, or even a variety of things, such as detergent and food. It could be something you are eating that is crossing over through your milk. (My son, who is allergic to milk now, was miserable when I drank milk. As soon as I took it out of my diet, he was fine!) Your doctor can take a simple blood test that determines whether they have allergies---I believe they look at the IGE levels, or something like that. In any case, milk, wheat (soy is a sister of wheat in the allergen family), and corn are 3 of the big allergy offenders. You might consider switching her formula (or stopping it altogether if that is possible) and also watching your diet for a few weeks or so and see if that helps. Good luck, this sounds like a very trying time.

Hi, a few months back my baby had a diaper rash for what seemed like weeks with none of the normal over the counter diaper rash creams helping. My doctor told me to try a mixture of fungal cream (athlete's foot cream) and hydrocortisone (1/2 and 1/2 of each) and it seemed to work wonders. Now everytime either of my kids starts with a diaper rash, I use that mixture and the rash is gone by the next day. Hopefully this helps ~ A. (mom of 3)

I would dump the soy formula, pump if you need her to have a bottle, but otherwise, nurse her more. I used to let my girls play "nudie butt" for a while after each diaper change, that helped & use cloth diapers. Wash them in "free" laundry soap. The chemicals in the disposible ones can be irritating. Also try mixing a little acidophilus power into her baby food. You can get the power at a heatlh food store.

My daughter, at 9 months, also got a rash and exzema. For the exzema (that was between elbows, back, knees, etc.) my dr. recommeneded arbonne. And, it went away within days to a week (had been there weeks).

As for the yeast infection/diaper rash, I tried lotrimin, it helped but didn't do much to take it away. It was so bad that she was completely red and bumpy all around her bottom and front area, and kept getting worse. He prescribed Vusion. It does wonders, within 4 days it was gone!

Good luck,

K.,

Just try not to give her any Soy or gluten (oatmeal)for a month or so. Look at the labels for gluten-free items she could be allergic to both. Organic Quinoa flakes can be a sub for the oatmeal, Almond milk or Rice Milk can be a sub for the Soy and as for the gerber items just make sure you are getting organic. As for the Rash try organic coconut oil (you can find it at any health food store) it comes solid in a jar and you can rub this on her bottom and legs. This is a natural remedy for any yeast build up, bacteria, and soothes the skin. Just try this for a month and see if it gets any better. Hope this helps your little angel and calms your frustrations.

Sincerely,
M. K

Have they sent you to a Dermatologist? If not, I would try to see one or get a second opinion.
Try Aveeno bath treatment to help with the itchiness and Desetine if you have not done so already.
I would also try changing her diet, maybe se has developed a reaction to bananas or peas or pears, so I would take one thing away at a time for a couple of days to see if there is any changes, this way you can figure out if she has developed any alergies to that food.
I hope Bella feels and gets better soon.

Hi K.! Your poor baby! It's probably a combination of many things! First off I'd highly recommend switching out of many of your household products! Meaning, I am recommending this Wellnes Company Melaleuca. They are a 23 year old pharmaceutical company and they manufacture over 350 products for your home and personal use. So to help your daughter's skin irritation try using Melaleuca's RENEW Lotion! Its an amazing lotion which penetrates deep through 7 layers of skin working on treating the inside out! Also, you can bathe your daughter in warm water using Melaleuca's Renew Bath Oil to bring relief to her dry skin. Other products to change out of your home are your laundry detergents, personal cleansing products, and home cleaning products. Replace them all wih products from Melaleuca, which are eco-friendly, biodegradeable, and safer for your home and family! Switching to Melaleuca products in your home is like detoxifying your home! Everything in can be irritating your daughters skin and threatening her and your family's health. I can show you how to get started on switching to healthier and safer products from Melaleuca! Just give me a call or email me! Best Wishes!

My nephew has horrible rashes almost since birth. He has severe food and environmental allergies. He can only eat a select few organic food and drinks exclusively Evian water. Please take your baby in to get tested for allergies. Most people are allergic to soy products and that could be one of the culprits. Nightshade plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants are a big no-no because they are inflammatory.

Hope this helps.

Arbonne has a babvy line and the diaper rash cream works wonders. It is used for lots of things beisdes diaper rashes, like adults that have hives and so on. My son is just turned 1 and got his first diaper rash from eating too much pineapple. I was told that if your child eats an abundance of food that is acidic it changes the ph in their bowl movements causing a rash. I used Berts Bee's diaper rash cream for two week, it helped but never cleared up entirely. I used Arbonne for two days and his rash is completely gone. Just google it

Hi K., when you said thrush and diaper rash, it reminded me of what we went through with my son. Our dr gave us Vusion, it took a few days, but the rash went away. You could almost see instant relief on the next diaper change after applying the cream. Good luck, I hope your baby feels better soon. I hear that it is expensive, so ask your dr. for a card that allows you to purchase it for $10.

Hi K.,

I'm so sorry to hear about the troubles with your baby girl. It's horible when we can't "fix" our kids. I read through all of the advice and no body mentioned Arbonne. If it is in fact diaper rash or ezema sometimes the other products don't work because they contain mineral oil which is a gasoline by product and coats the skin so it cannot get under the skin and heal. Arbonne has an amazing baby line which has healed many babies. It is a pure safe and benefical product that does not contain mineral oil, so it actually penetrates the skin and will heal very quickly. If nothing else works and you'd like to give Arbonne a try, you can contact me and I can get you the product at a discount. Best of luck and I hope she's not too uncomfortable. My heart goes out to you.
J. - ____@____.com
ps. As soon as I posted this, I see that 2 people have reccomended Arbonne - see it works. Let me know if you'd like to try it!!

Hi K.,
I am a mom of a 23 and 16 year old.
My 16 year old YEARS (baby age) ago got such a bad rash or whatever on her bottom section she had red open sores, I even took pics because I couldn't believe it was really that bad. It was so bad I would let her just stay without a diaper for as long as possible.
Anyway, the only thing that cleared it up was Balmex.
http://www.balmex.com/index.jsp
Here is a coupon for a buck off.
You can try it. It sounds like its worth a try.
Also laundry detergents etc. can cause irritation too or maybe the brand of diaper, even though I know you said it's farther then that on her leg.
I hope it gets better, I know it's hard to see our babies like that. Good luck

Hey there. I had an extremely similar situation with my son. His rash began in the diaper area, and he had it all over his legs, arms, and head. First it was diagnosed as a diaper rash, then eczema, then cradle cap, and the list continued. I washed everything with DREFT, including my own clothes, and I started using Aveno baby care products on him, especially in the bath. It seemed to help alot. I also used pure corn starch in place of regular baby powder. I had to change my diet too, because I was still breastfeeding him, and wasn't sure if he was having a reaction. He is 2 years old now, and he has been rash free for a very long time. You should ask your pediatrician for a referral to a dermatology clinic since they haven't been able to diagnose his condition. I wish I knew more to help you out. Good luck.

I went through similar issues with my daughter. She has sensitive skin and is prone to yeast and UTIs. Some things that helped. I only bathe here 2-3 times a week. I use Aveeno's oatmeal bath and their anti-itch cream. I also use baking soda in her bath and give her cranberry juice to drink. Eucerin seems to be the only cream heavy enough to help her skin. This time of year we put it on her day and night.

Oh! Poor baby! I mean you, too! Have you considered using cloth diapers? When my sons had rashes as babies I would use cloth diapers during the day when I wasn't at my peak busy times. Sometimes I just pinned a dishtowel around 'em or even let them hang out naked on a towel. Their rashes would usually clear up overnight. I suggest using an all-natural detergent with no scent added for wasing her clothes. Also consider going all-natural with all of her skincare:bodywash, lotion, diapercream, etc. to make sure you're avoiding skin irritants, among other things. Anything heavily scented usually has unwanted chemicals in it. You can find a good selection at health food stores. Has your daughter recently been on antibiotics? Antiboitics take a lot of helpful bacteria out with then too, often times causing yeast infections. Probiotics (beneficial bacteria) can be very helpful with a yeast situation. I've seen a few varieties of probiotics for babies at the health food store. To help soothe, try filling an old sock with plain oatmeal, tying it off, and putting it in her bath. Squish the sock around and soon a slippery milk will fill the bath. I do this for my boys and they love it! I hope this helps!

I totally can relate and really feel for you! I went through the same thing when my DD was about 2 months old and it was a rough couple months of battling what ended up being thrush...it was SO awful. The ONLY thing that works for us is Nystatin Ointment after EVERY diaper change with Triple Paste smeared all over the top of it. Initially it helped within a few diaper changes and the rash was gone in a few days. I also use this combo whenever we get even a little bit red to avoid a bad flareup. Also, start Bella on some baby yogurt if she doesn't have a dairy intollerance (is that why she is on soy?) the probiotics will help with the yeast overgrowth. If you can take Probiotic Supplements yourself like Culterelle daily for awhile, she will get it through your breastmilk and hopefully that will help as well. Stay away from wipes for awhile and air dry her bum for an hour or so each day if possible (we used washcloths and water only). Also try baking soda in her bath to soothe her bum. I hope it gets better fast! One more thought...my daughter used to get a rash when we started introducing oatmeal. She did fine with rice cereal. Maybe it is a reaction to something she is eating. I noticed right away because she would get diarreah and that would contribute to the onset of the rash.

I have three kids and my baby (now 3) always had diaper rash, the kind that bleeds! The other two never had a rash so I was unsure what to try. Then I heard some one say to try Bag Balm (green tin square can) and this has worked better then anything else I have tried. It is hard to find, but I do always see it at Walgreens. I am not sure what causes the rash in my son, but this still works! Good luck and I know what you are feeling, having to change a diaper when you know it is painful for you little one is just awful, I never could tell who cried harder, me or my son!! I will also mention that none of my kids could wear pampers, they have all used Huggies! I tried pampers with each and foung that in the first two it caused red bottoms and with the third one the pampers left welts and blister like spots. God Bless and the best of luck!

hi K., First of all you are not a bad mom. Exzema does not look like a regular or diaper rash, give her cool to baths with cornstarch, that will help the itching, in her diaper area if you believe it is a yeast infection apply vagisel just like you would a diaper cream, one of my daycare boys gets yeast infections so that's what they tried and it worked, check to see if the rash in her diaper looks the same as on the other parts of her body, this heat is causing kds to break out with rashes and exzema, and other things. Sounds like she is heating healthy however I have done a lot of reading on soy, and the information that I have personally come accross states that soy is not healthy and is linked to different diaseases, now the information could be wrong, but i know people with health issues who were told to stop drinking soy bassed milk, you can go on the enternet and type in soy and kids. I pray your precious little oned gets better, keep her cool the best you can, let her run around the house in just a diaper. J. L.

I would suggest taking her off the soy right away. You can read lots of stuff online about soy: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2001/0...

I would also try cloth diapers or at the very least a diaper without any bleach like Seventh Generation. They also make wipes without fragrance.

Lastly, try stopping the dove and Johnson & Johnson's products which are all loaded with chemicals. I saw someone recommended Melaleuca which are awesome products and have helped many of my friends with little ones with skin conditions. if you don't find those products at least go to an Organic/Chemical free baby line (California Baby or any other) as it will not have parabens, syntehtic fragrances, etc which are all very irritating to gentle skin.

I can only imagine how frustrating this must be to see your little one suffer and feeling hopeless. Best of luck! I am sure with all the great advice on this site she will be healed in no time!!

Wow!!! You've received a lot of responses! Mine is kind of off the wall and won't necessarily help, but your situation sounds similar to my daughter's. She developed a "nasty" rash up and down her legs!! It would first be blistery, then turn to bumps then become just red all over (if I remember right). Then it would start to clear and then would appear on the buttocks or the other side. And so it went on and on like this. Went to the dermatologist. He prescribed all the meds., lotions you listed. My daughter's rash cleared up eventually and I couldn't tell you why she had it. What did seem to help... We have a pool and after she would go swimming, the rash seemed better. Something in the chlorine I'm guessing. I'm not telling you to put your daughter in a pool or chlorine for sure!!! But we never knew what caused it, but I believe the chlorine helped "dry up" whatever it was that was causing it. I'm sure it's nothing you are doing wrong. Aveeno products are very good! Aveeno oatmeal bath is great!!

Hi,
I am so sorry this is happening...hang in there- you are doing great! Some of my suggestions: like others said, it may be the soy or another food alergy. Maybe take a break from the soy and gerber, and try just things you make. ALso, cloth diapers can really help with diaper rash- just to heal them. Disposibles have lots of chemicals that sometimes can cause reaction as well. I have also used cornstarch to help with rash. I go to a wonderful acupuncturist who recommends herbs.
Good luck!!!

I feel so bad for your baby... My sister-in-law's daughter also had this but she was given something through her dr. I'm sorry I can't contact her as she just moved to Washington and are still getting set-up with phones lines, etc.

I would recommend you use a lot of A & D every day, scoop it onto her bottom area... This helped my son when he would get rashes from the diapers. Even when they don't have a rash, use the A&D and it will help prevent it.

Now that my son is 4 when he's having trouble going #2 or has a loose bowl movement, he comes and asks for his medicine for his bootty. I usually use a Q-tip and put some A&D on his back side.

If I were you, I would get a 2nd opinion b/c obviously what they are giving you is not working considering the 3 wks+. Demand that your Dr. do tests and stuff or send you to a dermatologist for expertise opinion.

If she is one of the early walkers you might want to think about potty training. My mother in law had to do that with her oldest daughter due to a similar situation. If she's not ready for that think about switching to one of the "organic" diaper brands. Nature Baby Care, Seventh Generation or something along those lines. Also, try to get a referral to have her see a dermatologist. Many (too many) times the general doctor doesn't know a thing about anything he is seeing. Sometimes I wonder whether certain doctors should really be practicing medicine.
