Quiet Baby Starts Regular Habbit of Yelling. Is It a Normal Phase?

Our 4 month old has always been rather quiet. He laughs quietly too. Never made much noise at all. Then one day he started yelling...about 12 days ago. IT is really really loud. he does it all day on & off. He seems to have no negative feelings while he yells...like it is just to hear himself yell. He will play with a toy while he yells, and has no facial expression. Will he grow out of this? Do most babies do this? I want to make sure I am not overlooking a possible problem.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I realize now a boy will be different then the house of girls only I grew up in! Decided to check for ear wax build up ( yes he has much), and will pay attention to if he can communicate without yelling...just to check the hearing thing. So far seems all is normal. Ha...he is also doing the constant fake cough that was mentioned.

I think it is a normal phse, as my daughter went through the same "testing." She was little bit older when she did start yelling. It lasted for a few months, and then she started to realize that it was too loud, with a little help from us!

Just wanted to let you know my son went through that stage and my daughter is still experimenting with her ability to yell on occasion.

Hi K.. My daughter is almost 6 months old and does the same thing. I think that they realize that they have a voice and they want to hear it. I think it is cute and funny. I am sure that as they get a little older they will realize that yelling isn't their only "talent" and move on to something else.

Hi, K., My youngest did that too. It seemed she just enjoyed experimenting with her voice. I wouldn't worry about it. And, yes, it was really loud!!! I wondered what the neighbors were thinking! LOL! Good luck. N.

We went through the same thing with our son. We asked our doctor about it and she said he was just exploring his ability to make noise and probably "talking" to his toys or you or whatever was around him. It will pass as he discovers new sounds and different ways to communicate.

K., It's not unusual for a baby to be quiet or to yell. The only thing I question is this, does he yell EVERY TIME he speaks? If you answer yes to this, then I would take him in to the doctor and have his hearing checked out. Best of luck to you.

My 4 month old granddaughter has started doing the same thing. We finally figured out that she is doing it because she can!! It is a new thing for her to hear her own voice and she loves shrieking.

He's just figuring out what he can do with his voice-- all my five babies went through this phase. It'll be as fleeting as all the rest of the very fleeting quirky things he'll try out as he figures out his little body's working mechanisms! Just get a kick out of it-- I would just laugh and yell back at 'em, and it would turn into a fun game. And if he does it in public, who cares? He's wee. Everybody gets that he's incapable of knowing proper social behaviors at this age, so they're not gonna care!

Enjoy him-- he'll be 15 any minute now.

Hi K.,
I see that you've gotten a lot of responses already, but I just wanted to say you're not alone! My daughter is also 4 months old and has recently decided that screaming/squealing is her new thing. She does it when she's happy or mad, and after reading your responses, I guess it's totally normal. Hopefully she'll quiet down soon because she definitely has a set of pipes on her! Good luck! Maybe invest in some ear plugs? ;)

This is very normal. Baby is just testing out the fascinating new sounds he can make. This won't be the last time you're amazed by the noises he makes. :)

He is learning to talk/use his voice. Try whispering in response, like you are having a conversation with him. make it a game. There is some great books at your local library about how kids learn to speak. You can help him be responding in a conversation like matter. If you play with the volume of your voice he will probably follow suit eventually. I think it is normal at this point 12 days isn't that long and he probably loves the attention!

Welcome to the world of boys. This is the begininning of a fun and fantastic roller coaster ride. But, "hearing" your concern, you could check to see if he has a wax buid up in his ears. Just don't use a Q-tip to do it, it will cause the wax to get pushed back and cause many other problems. Your pediatrician will have an "ear pick" that is better for removing wax.

sounds normal to me! He's experimenting with this awesome new power he has- his voice! my daughter did that too, she's not 18 mos and has pretty much outgrown it, but many times will still yell or shriek out of joy or because, hey, it's fun!
