Question for Working Moms About Time Off

I have to take my remaining vacation days next week or I will lose them. My husband has to work, my kids will be in school and I don't have vacation money. So, 5 days off work. I can pick my girl up from pre-k or let her go to her afternoon sitter to play with her friends. Son gets out at 3 but has after school prgram that he loves. I want to take advantage of the time, not just piddle it away. What would you do with the time?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks! I want to spend at least 2 days completely spring cleaning my house and winterizing it. I'd like to really clean and organize the kids rooms before the Christmas influx of stuff. I will probably cook some of the more time consuming meals that I don't usually have time for and I will probably do some napping! I love thrift store shopping, so I may take my time to go browse and dig through racks. If money allows, I love the idea of spending one day getting a mani pedi and going to a movie or having lunch with a friend. I also like the idea of spending a little alone time with husband. I may have time to order some photo calendars for Christmas gifts and organizing my digital photos. I'm starting to get excited about this time.

I get one week like this per year, and I use it to cook as many meals as I can and put them in the freezer. Makes my life easier for several months afterwards.

Clean my disaster of a house. I mean a deep clean going through everything. I love to do it, but never have the time or so it seems.

Oh my! I would think of about 764 things I needed to do around the house. Think of the huge jump start I could get on Christmas, all the cool things I could do to make Thanksgiving that much more special, all the pampering me things like main/pedi's, haircuts, etc. I would probably even make a list of all that I wanted to accomplish.Then....

You know what I would probably really do? Piddle the time away cuz that would actually be the best present to me--to have real time that I could just piddle away!

I say do whatever you want--it is YOUR vacation after all, right?

I typically get this 1 time a year - no kids. I usually clean out the house (get rid of junk - like toys the kids never play with but as soon as you try to get rid of it they just HAVE to have it, lol) Or I have painted rooms and updated decor while having time to myself.

Treat yourself to pedi one day, and a coffee another day. I would at least try to do that.

Have fun!

I would do exactly what you put in your SWH -- sounds like a fabulous plan! A little organization and prep, a little rest, a little thrifting, a possible beauty appt. Can hubby take a day or afternoon off, too? I also may go catch a movie that I otherwise wouldn't normally convince my hubby to see. Have fun --- jealous!!

Added: wouldn't it be funny to put this question to the husbands. You can be sure that their answers wouldn't be 'yard work' or 'cleaning' ;)

Clean Clean Clean! Then nap!

Then as a special treat...get a pedicure!

And then maybe do more cleaning after that...then to top it all off, a great nap!

What are your hobbies? I'm with the other moms with the idea that I would spend most of my time off cleaning, but it's nice to plan stuff that just YOU would enjoy.
In my world this would include: crafting (I'm new to sewing and have lots of stuff to get started on), reading, watching my soaps (saved on my DVR), watching girlie movies, leisurely walk around the mall/shops, craft stores--I could spend hours browsing, baking (I'm also new to this hobby and have been working on perfecting my banana bread recipe)...

I would read and drink tea! I would probably try to catch up on any home projects I had going and maybe do a bit of Christmas shopping.

Attack Mt Washmore. Get the kitchen cleaned/organized/ ready for holiday cooking. Go to the grocery store all by yourself, in the middle of the day, when it's not busy, and stock up on everything you need for your holiday cooking/baking. Cook ahead and freeze for busy nights.

And do at least one nice thing for yourself each day!!! A nice long bath when there's NO O NE HOME to knock on the bathroom door is a nice treat!

Sit down with a book for uninterupted reading time. If you aren't going to save any money by picking up the kids early, then I would take advantage of the "me" time for sure. You could tackle some of the home projects that are just too intense to do a bit at a time with children around.

I would clean the things I don't get to clean as often as I'd like. I would go through cupboards, closets, toys and clothes. I would read. I would work out. I would go to lunch with a friend. I would get a pedicure.

I would clean my house from top to bottom, and throw lots of stuff away that I did not need. Go through all the kids toys and clothes they no longer use and take them to Goodwill!! Then I'd make sure and have lunch with a good friend that I haven't seen in a long time!! Maybe two of them!! Good luck!! Oh, and I would not feel guilty at all about having the kids go to their day care and after school programs. You don't have to do it every day, but sometimes us moms need time to ourselves, and time to get things done without being interrupted!!

Write a list of things you want to do, and tick them off as they're done. For instance, Christmas shopping without kids, go to the movies, have a pedicure, declutter a cupboard, get together for lunch with friends, go for a swim etc. Enjoy your time off!
