Alright ladies, this is an awkward enough conversation/question as it is, and it is not for me, so please feel free to give opinions, knowing that the person who this is for will never hear them. I, however, would like honest input.
My brother's girlfriend called me last night and told me she is planning on going to see him next weekend. (He is stationed in California). She will get there Sunday, and has to leave late Monday afternoon. She is not on birth control (no idea why not, but hey this is not my life so whatever) so she was wondering about getting the morning after pill. They will most likely have sex Sunday, and then she wasn't sure about Monday (btw.....this was a TOTALLY awkward conversation I was having with my little brother's gf ha!) So she didn't know if she should take one Sunday night and then another one Monday (like a full dose Sunday, full dose Monday) or if she should just take one Monday after it's all said and done. They for sure don't need a kiddo right now. I told her I'd check into it because I have NO idea what the best best would be. Maybe I should call planned parenthood and ask them? Also, she is flying out of here so she will be spending Saturday with us. I'm thinking the best place to go might be planned parenthood, but if it's on the weekend, where are places that have this thing? Also, do we need an appointment or anything or do we just walk in and say we need a morning after pill? Will they give us more than one dose? Any other suggestions or stories of using the morning after pill? After I hear from ya, I'll go have another very awkward conversation hehe :) Thanks ladies!
*I should mention, pretty sure that they will be using condoms as well, she just wants to be extra careful*

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies; I guess I should have done some more research on it before I asked the question myself :) Yes, she is immature, and I will talk to her again about birth control. I guess she feels she doesn't need it because she hasn't seen my brother more than four times in the last two years (he is in the Marines, she is in her senior year of high school). I think I have actually scared her away from birth control because I got pregnant even though I was taking the pill faithfully. Then I had Mirena and it was an awful experience. Thanks again for the input; I will for sure let her know!!

chemically speaking, the morning after pill does not cause an abortion, it chemically blocks the hormones needed to start a pregnancy, NOT terminates after it has already started.

Take her to planned parenthood and get her on real birth control!! Not that you can prevent it, but she doesn't sound mature enough to have sex.

"Morning After" is NOT a form of birth control- it's an "oops my birth control failed" back-up. It is a very intense dosage of hormones that is intended to keep a fertilized egg from implanting. A friend of mine took it after their condom broke and she was very ill for two days afterward.

If she wants to make sure that they do not get pregnant, then they shouldn't have sex. Considering the fact that this is unlikely, a condom is their best bet. If they don't want to use condoms- well, that's their issue.

She should contact her OBGYN or go directly to Planned Parenthood. They will explain to her how it works, but don't be surprised if they refuse to give it to her b/c it's NOT birthcontrol! It's a prescription med given AFTER a method fails.

Condoms, used correctly, will prevent pregnancy. Push that point hard.

Last time I checked, its not a form of birth control. It is an EMERGENCY contraceptive- emphasis on emergency. If she's that worried, then they shouldn't have sex. That being said, I took it once at least 10 years ago and it does cause cramping and bleeding- for me, it was like the heaviest day of my period and it last for a couple days.

Good grief. She sounds so immature. She really put you in a spot and does not realizr it..

The morning after pill is supposed to have terrible uncomfortable side effects for most women. That is why it is only for extreme circumstances.

Maybe she should go to a doctor and ask about other options if she is not willing to take birth control or there is not enough time this time to get it stated.
I hope she is as honest with your brother, so he can realizwe what a flake this person is.

Tread lightly with the 2 of them. She could turn this all around and make you look bad to your brother,.

If I were her I would forego it and pick up some spermicide or Today Sponges if she can find them at a drugstore. You do take the Morning After Pill as soon as possible after the sexual experience -usually the morning or day after, but it's a HUGE dose of hormones. It's a wonderful option for women who have been raped or had a condom break or something, but it's not designed for actual birth control use. Because of the huge hormone dosage, it can make you feel really sick for a day or two. They're different than they were about 20 years ago when I took them, but I was sick for two days. Ultimately though it's better than an unwanted pregnancy. She sounds kind of silly actually. I mean, why is she telling you this and why doesn't she do some research on the different forms of real birth control out there?

She can go to PP or she can see her doctor if she can get in and ask about it. PP probably has them to give on site, but you can also get a prescription and have it filled at a pharmacy. I'm pretty sure PP is going to let her know this isn't for planned birth control and she needs to have an actual birth control method in place.

I took this twice in my younger years and it is no joke. It can make you feel really sick. Just tell her to pick up some condoms and use them everytime. Unless the condom breaks then she should go to a plan parenthood but I thought (and I am probably wrong) you can just ask the pharmacist.

I believe most states still require a prescription, which can then be filled at any pharmacy.. Contact Planned Parenthood today and see what their advice is.

I read your answers and I can tell you from personal experiance what to expect. I took it once a few years ago after I messed up on my birth control. Duh! :) she can just go to a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist i believe its otc. However, i agree with most of your other posts- tell them to use condoms and that should be fine.

When I took the pill- it didn't do anything to me at that point. I didn't feel sick, or anything. But my next cycle was very very heavy with lots of cramps. My normal cycle lasted 4 days that next time it lasted 10+ days of heavy bleeding and clotting. I would NOT take it again and would recomend anyone taking it if they dont have to.
