is it normal for a pediatrician to look at a little girls private area in a routine exam?
Yes. I have boys but my pediatrician always asks my permission before that part of the well exam. She's very good too!!!
Anytime I take my daughter to get her shots....and full exam they have done the same thing to me. At first I was a little uncomfortable but it is for their protection to ensure they are not beeing sexually abused.

I take my 3 kids every year to the pediatrician and he does a vaginal exam on both my girls at every physical exam. He also checks my son. My girls are 15 and 13 and my boy is 12. I am always present in the exam room and our pediatrician always asks my permission to examine their genital area. Now of course my kids get embarrassed during this part of the exam, but I have explained to them that your vagina is part of you body and the Doctor is just making sure there's nothing wrong and that their healthy. Our pediatrician is a very kind and caring man and I consider him the best. He truly has my kids best interest at heart.

FYI, As they get older, they do breast exams and show the girls how to do that themselves.

Yes it is, esp. in the younger girls. However, every pediatrician I have had tells the kids first (even before they understand it) and they always tell them that they can only do that because they are doctors and they ask my permission and the childs. As my girls have gotten older, the dr. continues the conversation by reminding them that no one else is allowed to look at or touch them there and that they can always tell her, or another adult if someone ever does. That is why I LOVE my pediatrician!! ~A.~
Yes, it is normal for a pediatrician to do an external vaginal exam but they will usually let the child know beforehand and tell them that it is only okay because they are the doctor and it is not okay for anyone else to look or touch them down there. So yes, it is normal. But it is NOT normal for them to do an internal vaginal exam, just a short look and feel of the outside.
