Pyogenic Granuloma

I thought my son had a mole he scratched on his shoulder - then it got bigger and I thought it might be a spider bite. So I took him to the doctor, who said at one glance, it was a pyogenic granuloma and it would have to be surgically removed. I googled it of course to see more detail. Has anyone had one of these things and had it removed? I understand if it isn't removed entirely, it will/could grow back. Should I have it removed???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We did go see the pediatric surgeon. I kept a bandaid over it until then. By the time we got there, it had formed a scab and the doctor saw it was barely hanging on - it probably would have fallen off. But we had it surgically removed - with little sterile sissors that looked like my cuticle sissors. Then they cauterized it. He does have a small small scar, but you have to really look for it and know that you're looking for it to even see it.

Hi A.,

I worked for a plastic surgeon for some time and saw tons of these come through his office and they do have a chance of reoccuring, but is good practice to remove them because they can grow and become a bigger nusance. If it were my kid I would have it removed.

Hope this helps!

I developed a pyogenic granuloma on my finger when I was pregnant with my daughter. I thought it was a blood blister. In my case, it actually broke open. I went to the ER, my ob/gyn, my family doctor, and then finally a dermatologist who was able to diagnose it as a pyogenic granuloma. In my case, it was caused by hormones. I chose not to have it removed. I still have it, but it has gone down in size.

I don't have any advice, but I just wanted to let you know that you are lucky you didn't have to go through the run around that I did to get a diagnosis.

Personally I would have it removed. Kids can be so mean and I would hate to give kids a reason to pick on him. You have to do what is best for your family and if you can't afford it then you just can't afford it. But do the best you can and know that whatever choice you make will be the best one for your family.
Best of luck.

My son had one on his chest. We had it removed at the dr's office it was easy and has not grown back. My dr said it didn't have to come off but they do bleed easily- my son's did. My son was very embarrassed by it he wore a bandaid over his chest all summer. So we took it off.
