Problems Eating Suddenly

My daughter is 4 months old. She has always been good at meal time, eating 5 oz every 3 hrs. I was actually contemplating bumping it up to 6 oz as she doesn't seem quite satisfied at the end of the bottle. All of the sudden she is having problems eating. It's like she forgot how to swallow or something. She gags and pushes the bottle out and just starts crying. It doesn't happen every time though. So she will choke down maybe 1 or 2 oz and then be done for until the next bottle...which she usually eats no problem. She doesn't seem fussy or hungry when she has only a portion of the bottle. She is teething, first tooth is coming through and sharp, could that have anything to do with it? I know she doesn't have thrush, I checked. Maybe she can go 4 hrs in between feedings? It's been happening for about a week now and I don't know what to do....thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

She's probably just not hungry yet when she is getting bottle that she is spitting out. In my experience at this age she should be going at least 4 hours during the day between bottles and 6 oz. shouldn't be too uch for her to get at one setting and will probably help her go longer between bottles. I wouldn't be to concerned about the gagging etc since she doesn't do that at each feeding. If it increases in frequency make an appointment with your pediatrician. Good luck.

Possibly sore throat or ear infection. When babies suck on the nipple it creates a pressure that increases ear pain. My child does the same thing when she has ear infections and/or throat is sore (red throat when examined by MD).

I would check with the doctor since she is so young if her daily milk intake has gone down as it should be increasing. You may want to try changing to every 4 hours just to see if that helps; she may just not be hungry and is turning the milk away. But children can develop reflux and if so she may need to be checked out. I think teething could also be involved, but if this continues I would not wait long before at least calling the doctor to describe her symtoms. I am sure she is fine but just to be sure. Take care!

Hi M.!

I agree with Kim and Misty.....they both have excellent advice! You sound like a very good mom and are very attentive to your baby! From my experience, (i have 4), my first instinct would be to check out the teeth and let her eat when she is hungry.......she won't hesitate to let you know when she is! Keep an eye on her liquid intake, and don't let her get dehydrated.....perhaps give her some water and or some juice, just keep an eye on the sugar in the juice.... If anything else comes up that you find bizare, take her to the dr. Follow your gut instince, and even if it turns out that she is fine, atleast you have peace of mind and parental experience you can rely on for the next go around! You are a good mom! Keep up the good work!

I noticed, too, that you are a Navy wife......just another quick note to say thank you for your husbands and your sacrifice for our country! Thank you from another SAHM.....without you , I wouldn't be able to do what I do!

God Bless You!
