Has anyone hired a private swim teacher to give swim lessons in your home pool? Our son will be 4 this summer and needs lessons, but is very shy and I don't think will do well in a group environment. Any recommendations/ referrals?
Thanks.

Starfish swim school in Rocklin does private in home lessons. The teachers are really fantastic and are so great with kids. I've been taking my daughter there for private swim lessons for over a year and she has learned so much. I know the only issue that Kelli (the owner) has mentioned regarding in home lessons is that pool temperatures can vary with the weather if they aren't heated making the lessons a bit harder to get through. There pool they teach from is at their home, is covered and is always heated to 90 degrees so it is really comfortable for the kids. Here's the phone #916-632-FISH
Good luck,
A.

i'm not sure where you live but several of my friends have taken their very shy kids to dolphin swim school and have loved it - really loved it. i believe the lessons are one-on-one.

Hi A.--I was a lifeguard/swim instrutor for 10 years, and I would recommend a group setting, even if it takes a few days to get him warmed up. If he is by himself he will just clinge to the wall. Kids want to do what their peers are doing. If you do decide to do lessons at your home pool, I recommend you be inside the house, he will just look to you help. Roseville Parks and Rec offer private classes, but in the pool with everyone else, maybe he can benefit from that. And maybe help overcome being shy. Water Safety is one the most valuable thing a child can learn, so they need to know it can be serious, but also fun!!!

I'd go with the group. Give him a chance with the group swim lessons. Swimming is a social thing and it is fun to hang out with the moms for an hour. He is going to have to go to Kindergarden soon and this could be a good transition for him. I think GB Highschool has a good program. There is also a cool place in Loomis I can't remember the name but I have heard good things about it.

My girls are teenagers now and I have fond memories along with goofy pictures of them both at swim lessons. My older daughter has on the shy side but swimming lessons were fun for her and we love to look back at the pictures.

Give the Group a try.

Christine
