Preschools - Redford,MI

My oldest will be 4 in June, and I'm looking to start researching preschools. Since he's our first, I'm clueless. Where do I start?

My husband and I both work, and we have 2 smaller children, so we need flexibility. Do we look for a preschool around our house? (Westland, Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights), closer to between work and home? (Southfield, Farmington)

Anything special I need to know? (i.e. "requirements" for preschool?)

Since your in MI, you may want to check in to Tutor Time. We have one near us (in Warren though) but are franchised throughout the state, I think. I loved when my son went there. There was alot of focus on socialization, but also academics. We got updates daily on what they learned and monthly they helped the little ones complete a "journal", where they asked the kids questions and wrote down their answers....It was one of the things I looked forward to each month and seeing his cute answers made me smile. Also, if you need before and after school care once he starts school, they will take care of dropping off and picking up, which is a God send for two working parents. Their drivers are very reputable and safe and meet all requirements for this type job. Google them on line to find one in your area.

I also agree with other posters about looking for one closer to your home vs one closer to work. I would rather have my son in my car for a limited time during rush hour, because I worry about car accidents and would prefer him to be safe at school than traveling mile after mile with me during rush hour and hazardous weather conditions.

I was a little more methodical when looking at schools. I put together a list of all the ones in the area that I was willing to drive to. (don't forget about local churches/temples they usually have good a credited programs) Eliminated ones I heard or read negative things about, then you call the potentials (or just drop by) for a tour of the facility and ask all the questions you want.
What is their policy on late pick-up?
do they meet your Dietary needs?
How often are the toys & equipment cleaned?
How many teachers per student ratio?
How do they prepare for kindergarten?
then choose based on their answers, what you see and your budget. I was surprised that some of the programs I liked the least were the most pricey...

search for preschools in your area and then decide from there. Might be more convienent for both of you if the school was close to your home so you wont have to go that far for dropoff and picjup. Also when you find the preschools in your area you can search them on the better business bureau. They report all complaints and can tell you if anything weird has gone on at the school. Plus take the time to visit them with your child and see how they react. Children can be very intuitive about these thigs. Good Luck!!

When I started my then 3yr old in preschool, I wanted one that would fit his personality - give him the experience without overwhelming him. I wanted small class size, low teacher turnovers, clean/sanitary guidelines, communication how he was doing, and clicking with the teachers/staff. I wasn't concerned about academics as I was concerned about socializing and potty training. Based on our schedule because we worked, I chose one close to work so I could run over periodically and check in on him, but eventually chose one closer to home because our situation changed. You may visit www.greatschools.com for more information on chosing one. Good luck!
