my son turns 3 in two weeks and has NO interest in potty training. I'd like to train him since he is registered for preschool next year and can't go unless he's trained. I'm against pushing the issue, but at the same time...any suggestions?
i've been told to let him go without a diaper, but I really don't want urine all over my carpet

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

I have had the pleasure of training two sons and neither was the same. With my oldest, fruit loops (or cheerios) in the toilet worked! With my youngest, time, songs, and wild excitement worked.

Oldest: Put 3 fruit loops in the toilet and told him to aim. He was 15 months, that day was the last of diapers. He was ready though and had been trying. There were a lot of accidents, but it was a lot better than diapers.

Youngest: I waited for him because he never had any interest. When my 3yr old neice was going potty like a big girl he wanted to as well so we started. He is 2 and we've been trying since Christmas. Two weeks ago I stopped buying diapers and night time pull ups. I bought him Spiderman underpants and told him not to get spiderman wet. Last night he went all night without an accident! First time! What I learned though is that diapers and pull ups let them be lazy about it. Find something that excites you son, bribing is ok, but screaming wildly and running around crazy works better for us.

Good luck to both of you

Almost forgot.... Pooping on potty was a nightmare until we made up the bye bye poop song. Books work great as well because he is occupied and not trying so hard.

Just a hint... asking your son if he has to potty about every 15 minutes seems rediculous, but eventually there will be a lot less accidents because what are the chances that anyone would have to pee twice in 15 minutes? It teaches him to reconize what his body is telling him.

Hey there Adrien, I potty trained my first child in a weekend, I bribed him with a toy he really wanted, and took him to the potty every 2 hours for 3 days and he did great, when he didnt wet his underware he got the toy, however at night for about a month i put him on pullups,in the mornings i took him immediately to the bathroom, then put on underware..

Hi A.,

My name is C. and I have a son who will be 3 in September. He started going to the potty at the end of May at his will without me pushing him. All of a sudden one morning he asked to go potty and I was absolutely shocked. What I would try doing with him is getting a chart or even make up one that has step-by-step task bathroom duties (going, wiping, flushing, washing and drying). When he accomplishes any of those task give him a sticker to place on that specific tasks. Also you can go to www.kidskando.com and they have great potty training advices. Sometimes my son has accidents but the majority of the time it's because he's sooooo into what he's doing he holds it in instead of going to the potty but when I tell him to go he goes right then and there. I hope this helps you out a little bit. Don't get discouraged it will come and when it does celebrate.

C.

I agree with not pushing the issue but I understand how frustrating it can be. My son will be 3 in Dec. he is doing well potty training but at first he also showed no interest. I too was suggested to leave him without a diaper, this seem to work a little but actually what worked best for him was training pants not pullups, the cloth training pants. He did pee through them once or twice but once he realized it went all over him and the floor he new to run to the bathroom. Also he loves elmo so I got some elmo books and read to him while he was sitting on the toilet. He still is not good with pooping on the potty but he has the peeing pretty much down. Just keep trying, find out what is best for your son and remember he will do it when he is ready. Lots of luck Thanks -N.

The very best thing that worked for me was food treats and stickers. I started a sticker chart and gave M & M's for every potty trip. OK- candy was not the best reward- BUT he was trained at age 2. I would not let him go naked either. Does he get excited about flushing potty? or watching his dad go potty? My son was excited about all that and it seemed to help.
Good Luck
p.s.- I had a friend that had the book "potty train in 3 days" and it worked for her. she got it over the internet.

I would recommend getting a potty training DVD or VHS. My son had no interest in potty training at 3 years old until a friend of mine recommended a video. I thought books would work like they did with my two daughters, but with our boy it seems the visual worked better. The one we used was "Once upon a Potty." It wasn't long before he was going on his own. Good luck!
