Potty Training - Saint Peters,MO

I have 28 month old twin boys and one of them is getting interested in going "potty" on the toilet. I have two bathrooms (one upstairs and one downstairs), so I have a child's seat on top of the toilet seat in one bathroom and my SIL gave me their small portable potty that I keep in the upstairs bathroom. Well, this portable one seems more geared towards girls, because when my son sits on it and if he were to pee, I'm sure it would be all over the floor. Also, I have heard from other posts that you should teach the boys to go sitting down first and then teach him standing up. Do you agree with this and thus, I should get a different portable potty that would accommodate a boy sitting down or should I teach him how standing up? Right now, he hasn't gone, but likes sitting on it and pretending. He also lets me know whenever he has pooped in his diaper. My other son, I'm sure, will catch up soon. Thanks for any advice on this.

What can I do next?

Definitely go with sitting down. They can be relaxed and focus on the function itself. The standing up thing requires aim, which is a different skill, and will be quite a challenge for you to keep your bathrooms clean! That said, I have heard people put a cheerio or something in the bowl for them to aim at when they are ready for standing. My son began peeing standing up during the summer when he could be outside peeing on a specific bush, to get the hang of it. Good Luck!

We are teaching my son sitting down. We tell him to "push his ding-ding down" so he doesn't pee all over the place. He just uses his fingers to point it downward!

Our boys ( 4 of them ) were each different as kids are in everything. One stood very soon after he started going in the little potty and some were afraid of the 'big stool' and others just liked the little one as they felt more secure on it. I had one I liked for my grandson that is a Fisher Price one that plays music and he was not a small child and he fit perfectly on that one. I did return another type as it was so small and he didn't even fit on it without being too close to the guard. I would try the little potty first and if they go consistently then try the big one. Our twin grandsons who are now 5 months older than your sons, go in the little potty or the big stool and they don't seem to mind but one is more afraid of falling from the big one. I don't think they are ready to stand up yet but sometimes it they have an older brother they can watch that helps them stand but they do it in their own time. These grandsons are doing things like you described where one tells you more than the other, etc. One catches up in his time. Don't worry about the standing yet though. Whatever potty you use be sure to be consistent with that one until they get it down and feel secure on it. It's the process of going first and then the other things fall into place as to where they actually go, potty or stool, or if they stand.
