Potty Training - Irving,TX

My 3.5 year old son is pretty much fully potty trained during the day (with the exception of the occasional intentional rebellious accident) but he is not night trained. My problem is he will not poop on the big potty only on his little frog potty. He says he "cant" go on the big potty. I tried taking the froggy potty away and he would just go in his pants instead of trying on the big potty. Any suggeestions on how to get him on the big potty to poop (he will pee in the there)?

What can I do next?

It is actually easier for them to 'push' on a little potty. You might try giving them a taller step stool for them to rest their feet on while sitting on the big potty. Home depot also sells a toilet seat that is for big and little people. It has a small seat that they can pull down

You might try one of the inserts made for those big potty seats. I understand there are a few different ones available. Balancing on the edge of an adult seat might seem pretty precarious to your son, especially while part of his focus is on having a bowel movement. A potty-training insert may make all the difference in his ability to relax – which really helps pooping. You might even look up online what's available, and have your son help you pick out the one he likes best. "Ownership" could make it that much more appealing.

There's also a specific approach that might help your son choose to be fully day trained. Check out http://www.rogerknapp.com/medical/pottytrainingrefusals.htm

You probably know that night dryness is not in most childrens' control. He will get there when his body matures enough in several different areas.

Ask him why he likes to poop in the frog potty. Maybe he feels more secure and needs extra security when pooping. Have you tried a seat insert for the big potty?

I love the more padded toilet inserts. They really give a child a sense of security. That, as well as a step stool and a selcetion of good books might do the trick.

He may be scared of "back-splash". Get some little gifts from the dollar store, wrap them up and put them on the back of the toilet. Everytime he goes in the big potty, he gets a prize.

I agree with the others, try the footstool and the potty seat. He may not feel secure or relaxed enough with his feet dangling and the "danger" of falling in. Good luck!

I would try one of those inserts and along with that, get him a foot stool that he can put his feet on while he's on the big potty. That way he feels more secure and relaxed.
