Just wondering if you know when your child is really ready to potty train. I think Ayden is but he will not pee on the potty chair but as soon as I open is diaper he makes himself pee, like its a little game. NOT FUNNY REALLY. Does anyone have any ideas or tips for me.
THanks

So What Happened?

Thanks girls I will try all of these things. I guess the reason why I ask is because when changing him he will make himself pee so I know that he knows when he has to go now its just getting him to do it in the potty.

They are ready when they wake up in the morning or at nap time dry...When they do that you take them to the bathroom immediately because you know they need to go. Then after a few days of that you start working on going at other times of the day. That's when they're physically ready.

Then it's good to start when they are interested in going and can verbally tell you they need to go.

Try floating a couple of cheerio's or similar items in the toilet and have him aim for them. This is another game he can play, but he is really potty training! Good Luck.

Here's a little more advice from soemone who's trained lots of kids (I was a two-year-old preschool teacher):
Developmentally, if a child can draw a circle (not just go around and round, but make a single loop and stop), they have also accqired the ability to recognize their need to pee. Test it out on your daughter. If she can make a circle, she's ready. Trust me. I've used this test dozens of times. Of course, maybe you WILL go through a pack of underwear everyday for the first few days, but that's the nature of learning. The more she feels the messy underwear, the more she'll want to make it to the potty. Good Luck!

I bet he likes your reaction...thinks it's funny. Don't react if you can help it...just clean it up and start preparing for potty training.

I have 4 children 6,4,2,15months.

don't know how old Ayden is, but I assume he is 2.
what you could do is just ask him if he would like to go to the bathroom with you every now and then, and once he is there with you, pull off his diaper and have him sit on the potty...see what happens....if he pees in the toilet, then give him a REALLY GOOD REACTION...one he will really cheer at.

Another way to tell if you child is ready if his diaper is dry for long periods of time.

My 2 year old daughter was potty trained at 20 months...because her diaper was so dry...she could hold it for over an hour.

Good luck.

Just my opinion - 20 months old is pretty young for most kids, but I did have a 17 mo. old who one day just did it all on her own - really - it was amazing. My other two were o.k. One did it at 2 year, 4 mos. He was pretty easy. The third was like pulling teeth and had a difficult time until he was nearly 4 years old w/accidents - I rushed him into it. It's individual for each child. If he's able to do it in his diaper, on command, it would seem to me that he's got a good "sense" for what it's all about. You might want to try a reward system?

Good luck!

I tried everything for my son this summer and I will tell you -it isn't up to you-it probably is a game and it isn't worth playing. When he wants to -he will. I did everything from the potty chart, to taking away, to rewards, to praise, to the Dr. Phil method. Honestly, nothing worked until he decided he wanted to be trained. It is frustrating, but he will work through it.

My son was potty trainned at 18 mos -
Two things that helped out a lot,
1.) Show him How to use a potty (carefully cover yourself up)
and go, then have him go - kids learn quicker from seeing rathern then having it explained
2.) Make a big deal out of his undies - have him pick out several pairs from his fav cartoon, he will be excited to wear them n take care of them. Try to use pull ups at nap/night time only. As soon as he wakes up, take him potty n have him in his new undies the rest of time. Take him potty every hour or two at first, he will get hang of it -
Good luck!
