Potty Trained Boy Suddenly Pooping in His Pants

My son was potty trained at 3 years old. He adjusted relatively quickly (within a matter of weeks) without any accidents.
All of a sudden, starting about one month ago, my son has started pooping in his pants. At this point, he in not even trying to use the toilet for pooping, he is literally going straight into his pants. He is a very bright child, he communicates well, he understands how to use the toilet and so forth. He will tell you, I just pooped in my pants after he does so. When I ask him why he pooped in his pants, he says, because I did. Then I ask him where we are supposed to poop, and he says, toilet. He knows this, but he has stopped doing it. I am at my wits end and have no idea how to motivate him to poop in the toilet. He really doesn't seem bothered by it at all. He also attends a montessori preschool and is in class with 3-6 year olds. My fear is that the older children will not want to be around him or help him with his work if he is always pooping in his pants. By the way, he gets plenty of fiber and has absolutely no problems pooping.

Any thoughts/suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!!!

So What Happened?

So far so good. I told my son today that if he went the entire day with clean underpants and all pooping/peeing in the toilet, he would receive a treat at the end of the day. This worked today (the first day I am trying). He also mentioned to me today that he would like to stay clean so that he gets a treat at the end of the day. This is not really the way I want to motivate him, however, I think short term, this is a wonderful solution so that he begin creating a new rountine. Thank you so much for all of your ideas/suggestions. They are ALL wonderful!!!!
I am appreciative for Mamasource! :)

My daughter did this for a while. She was trained by 2 and a half and then at maybe 2 and 3/4 she started the poop in pants. Luckily, she LOVES icecream and so I told her if she would poop in the potty, she would get icecream. After a few weeks, she got back to pooping on the potty. Pooping seems to be quite different from peeing for kids. I am not sure why. Is there something that you know he would love, that he can have each day if he poops in the right place? good luck.

I just went through this with a girl now almost four. Her parents and I were at our wits end!!! After trying so many things, these are a few suggestions. Keep and eye out for him to go to a special place to poop, and catch him before he does it there. The last thing I told her, before she finally began to do it in my toilet, was that she would have to keep on her poopy pants if she did it again (she was surprisingly able to clean herself up, so threatening not to help her was not going to work). Was she just ready, or did the threat motivate her? We will never know. For these things, we try it all, ignoring it, talking rationally about it, trying to uncover an irrational fear, promising rewards, telling about the digestive system and what poop is, physically putting them on toilet (not a good option). For your own sake you can keep trying things, but, ultimately, "This too shall Pass".

Some kids do this out of fascination at the sensation, some do it to express their own kinds of control over themselves. Some do it as an expression of something not right in his life. Some kids with ADHD get some absorbed that they fail to register the signal that they need to go. It's hard to say why your child might be doing it, but have you asked him?

What does he say his reasons are when you're not asking in an exasperated tone?

What does he say might be reward enough to get him to go to the bathroom? Usually the child himself is the best source of ideas for what the child wants badly enough that they are willing to work for it.

Then start setting small goals of once, then one day, then one week, etc. and letting him work toward what he wants that way. Often there is a toy or an outing that the child finds so worthwhile they will work for it.

Good luck with it. If the problem persists, talk to your doctor. There may be more going on.

My son did this. He had a hard time pooping, and so he would get tired of sitting in the bathroom trying to poop, or hearing us ask him if he was done yet.

Try increasing his fiber so that when he does go it more soft. Then you basically need to go back to the training aspect of reminding him that he needs to go into the bathroom once and hour.

When my son was started going to new school and have a change in environment he started doing this. Try offering a creative reward system for not having any accidents.

At the end of the day if my son didn't have any accidents he could make anything he wanted. It free and kids can be creative with coloring painting or crafts. Hope this give you some ideas.
