Post-Op T&A

My son had a T&A Monday, and I'm having trouble finding foods he can eat. This is not your typical post-op aftercare case, as he has cognitive and developmental delays and doesn't understand that he can't eat cookies, pizza, chicken nuggets, etc. Also, he won't eat ice cream or popsicles (too cold), milkshakes, oatmeal, broth - basically any of the things the docs say to eat. Plus, he doesn't take his meds very well - spits half of it out, so he's in pain. So, what can he have? I've talked to the nurse at the docs office and the nurse at the hospital, but they don't really have any good solutions other than having him hospitalized and fed via I.V. I'm trying to avoid this, but running out of ideas. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

I would have let him eat what he wants. My son was ok with regular food.
Maybe not what everyone would do, but it he is OK with it, then why not.
Good luck.

A longshot but Campbells makes soup in all kinds of characters-maybe try Spongebob or somthing?

Also-try some drinkable yogurt. Mine like that when they have strep. Also Coke slushies from Target.

Can he or will he eat mashed potatos? If so try that and take it one moment at a time. Also as he heals you may want to give hi Liqui-lea for now to supplement so he gets the vitamins and minerals he needs. This is a liquid supplement, item # 20070. Has your sons health improves he will be able to eat more. You get this product at

If you can't get his meds in him, and he's in pain, I'm not sure there's anything you can give him that he'll take. Your best bet might be to take him to the hospital, and maybe they can give him something for pain in his IV too. Sorry :(

Hope your little guy feels better soon!!!!!!

Added: I like Mallory P.'s drinkable yogurt idea!!! My 3 yo loves Danimals drinkable yogurt.

My son had that procedure last year (he was 5 at the time). Our ENT told us to let me him anything that he wants, including cookies, chips, pizza, nuggets, whatever. He actually met with us pre-surgery and reminded my son that he could eat only the things that he wanted. I don't buy a lot of junk food (my kids would never eat anything else if I did!) but I did that week just so he would eat. The ENT told us that the food actually helps the healing process as it goes down the throat. That being said, my son didn't even eat those things well. When he would eat, he ate about 1/2 a poptart and a few pretzels. AND he wouldn't take his pain medication. He did end up back in the hospital for dehydration. It was terrible on both of us.
If there are no food allergies or other aversions, we were told ANYTHING goes. The most important part was to keep food in the belly and not get dehydrated. Will he take his meds if you put them in juice?
Good luck to you and your son. I know our case wasn't typical... most people do not have the trouble that we had... but I worry so much when I hear kids having these procedures. My advice is just do whatever you need to do to take care of family.

Back when I had my tonsils out, they said to eat potato chips. The salt helps the pain.

I ate a subway sandwich a day after my surgery... i couldn't handle the liquids anymore and needed some sustenance if he wants nuggets, give him nuggets, if it hurts he'll let you know! Plus maybe then he'll get hungry enough to eat soup or something softer!

When I had my tonsils out I lived on toast, cheez-its and apple juice. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but it actually helps your throat feel better.

I ate pureed food after my tonsillectomy. You can puree his regular food, including pizza, chicken nuggets, and, lol, even cookies if you add some liquid.

I'm not sure about milk. It's my understanding to avoid milk products after a tonsillectomy or when one has a sore throat because the milk causes the production of mucous. I'd ask the doctor or nurse about that.

I 'd advise against solid food because if food pieces get caught in the incisions they could cause an infection. Also solids would be very uncomfortable.

Don't know if these would work for you but some ideas:
yogurt
carnation instant breakfast drink
pediasure
V8 Splash or Smoothie
mashed potatoes (might be too thick?)

Don't what pain med he's on but could you use children's advil or motrin liquid and put it in a drink or yogurt or something? Don't know if you could get the full dose of pain med in him if he'd eat better?

I hope you can find something to work before having to resort to the IV. Good Luck!!!
