Poop Question - New Haven,CT

Our first son has always been very regular, he poops every day, always has. Our 6 month old goes 2 sometimes 3 times a week. Our pediatrician said that it is normal as it isn't hard and he isn't straining. While it may be normal, I'm thinking it can't be too comfortable. And he is totally blowing out his diapers when he does go because there is just so much in there. Now that he is eating baby food I'm thinking of adding a bit of prunes once a day to keep him more regular, do you think that is wise? I never had to use prunes with my first, so I'm not sure what to expect.

I've been staying away from the binding foods (rice cereal, apples, bananas) and just started pears this week. What are some other first foods that can help him with this?

Thanks for any info.

What can I do next?

baby probiotics are fantastic! My son had a lot of problems with constipation and we haven't had a single problem since.

Instead of staying away from binding foods (banana's are FULL of potassium!)- try always serving prunes WITH them instead. I've tried this with my daughter (while teething- the Motrin seems to constipate her) and it worked wonders. Now of course, she loves prunes and will even eat real prunes cut up as a snack!
Once he gets a bit older, watermelon can also help!

I go though the samething. My dr has me giving my son one cap full of miralax aday. Just mix it with his drink and he will go everyday. If you give it in the morning he should have a poop by bedtime. I also give my son prune juice but, I have to mix it with karo syrup to make it sweet that also works very well.

I agree with Liz. Peaches and pears always worked for my boys. Good luck.

Once my son started solids, I used fruits to keep him regular. A word of caution on the prunes- DONT overdo them. I gave half a jar to my son when he was about 8 mos, BIG mistake! lol- it's funny now, but what a mess! It was just a blowout diaper but one of epic proportions. After that I only used them occasionally and only a spoonful (regular spoonful) in his yogurt or other fruits.

Here is an article from a babyfood website (the whole site is awesome) that talks about feeding a baby with diarrhea. Not your problem, I know, but what I did was make sure to give the foods they list as foods to avoid when he was constipated. I always went back and forth. As soon as he'd get too firm, I'd give the fruits to soften it up. And as soon as it would get too loose, I'd give the binding fruits. I still do that. The way I remember the food to soften up (like prunes) is that the P fruits are poop fruits. Gross and silly, I know, but I didn't forget. So pears, peaches, prunes, peas, plums are all good ones for that. There are others too, but those are easy to remember. Also, make sure to offer water in a cup at every meal. I never had to do anything more with mine just by playing with his fruits and giving water. If that doesn't help, talk to your doc again before giving any meds or other "home remedies". They might not be safe.

My 2nd did the same thing and was always blowing-out diapers. I never washed the carseat once with my first, but with the second baby, several times! I don't know what foods can help, but here's something to help in the carseat when those blow-outs happen: These really work awesome
"Piddle Pad" or Carter's "keep my dry flannel bassinet pad"--cut in half and place under baby's bum like a piddle pad (cheaper alternative, and I think cooler too)

My friend's one month old was breast feed and hadn't pooped in about a week. So the doctor said 3 to 1 ratio of prune juice and water. He drank a little and the poop came back daily. So I would suggest mixing it with the other foods. Maybe a little is all your baby needs.

My first would go like once a week when he was baby and did just fine. My five month old son goes every couple days and sometimes everyday. I think as long as they go, and it is normal in consistency and color you are ok. My first blew it out like crazy when he went as well. And my little guy will blow it out sometimes now as well. It sounds like the norm to me. Good luck!

It sounds like he's having a FINE time of blowing out his diapers! I wouldn't be concerned, but it never hurts to add fiber into a diet. Don't you love babies??!!

peaches, pears. Mix prunes with other baby foods. Sometimes it is just a phaze and it will even out again. My son went through the same thing.

Peaches have a natural laxative effect, so you might want to give them a try! Good Luck!
