Pomeranians

A friend of mine needs a home for a fully house trained, immunized pom. I have a 4 and 5 yr old and no patience for anything making noise when daddys trying to sleep. I am not a fan of yappy ankle biter dogs. She assures me the dog is sturdy enough to handle 2 rough housing kids and that it's not a barker. What is your experience with Poms? Kid friendly? 1st time it snaps at one of my kids it's on my hitlist! And are they yappy annoying dogs or lovable sweet lap dogs that live to be pet. High maintenance health wise? My daughter had an expensive purse dog with never ending vet bills. I like dogs, I'm just trying to decide if this is a low maintenence, chill breed and will fit with our family or not.

What can I do next?

I think all little dogs are yappy. My MIL has one and it's bitten my son for no reason, he got up to go potty and the dog came running out of the back room barking are bit his leg. He needed a few stitches. So IMO I wouldnt get one with little kids

We have a pom-mix.

I love her, but she can get a little nippy, however she is still a puppy... I think older Pomeranian are usually a little calmer. She barely ever barks, and is very sweet... Poms do need groomed A LOT... like almost daily, (and bathed at least weekly, so consider that before you adopt. Look up the breeds information (like on the AKC website) to find out more about thier health problems and concerns.

My advice? Ask her if you can foster the dog for a week or so.. without committing. Spend a week with the dog and see how your kids are with the dog, and if she is "yappy" or snarls... In that time you could probably take her to the vet to get a check up and see if she/he has any unseen health issues. At the end of the week, decide if you'll want to keep the dog.

Good Luck!

My brother and his wife have Pomeranian's...they are yappy and like Dawn said - unpredictable around kids.

I would tell your friend to look into rescues that specialize in Poms...I would NOT take in this dog.

I don't feel like this dog will be any kind of fit with your family. Pomeranians are neat dogs, but they are finicky. The like their space. The don't like unpredictability, unless they grew up with it. This dog is being put into your home, and I don't think you can guarantee it won't bite. They are vocal, very much so.

I think she should look into a Pomeranian rescue. They will foster the dog ad give it stability in love during this time. They also work very hard to place the dog, with the perfect family.

I think it all depends on the specific dog. My mom has one that only barks one tiny bark when someone new comes in the house. She also lets my daughter pick her up and walk around with her like she is some kind doll(even though we try and stop her of course) and she is fairly old and one would think she might get upset, but nope. She will just turn right around lick my daughter. She has been around kids since she was puppy though and loves the attention.... She has never been sick or any trouble at all, we just love her to pieces which is saying alot since we seemed to have had the worst luck with animals before her, one bad/sick one after another.

Just keep in mind, ALL dogs, in fact, ALL pets are high maintenance. Like people they get sick and depending on how serious it can cost as much as it does to treat a person. They need lots of attention, and ALL dogs bark when strangers come to the door, they hear weird noises, and when fire engines sounding their alarms whiz by.

Some dogs are nervous around kids and busy houses make them agitated and LOUD. Others have anxiety issues and will chew things, get into the trash, or scrape up the carpet even though they are housebroken.

Sounds to me like you're not dog people. Maybe something like exotic fish might be more your speed. No messes, low maintenance, and the only worry is keeping the water the right temp and quality to sustain tropical life.

Ok, I LOVE pom's. They are the best dogs ever!!! They don't yip and or bite--they have the best personalities. But, If you aren't ready for a pet especially with a dog, don't get a pom as your 1st experience with a dog. They are higher maintance and they do pick one person from the family to really bond with and can have trouble with separation from that person if they are gone alot. GL with your decision.

I love poms! They are best for elderly ladies living in structured, quiet atmospheres who love to pamper their dogs. Poms are high maintenance and they do nip. They are basically little mini chows, so they have big personalities. I have worked at 2 vets and though I have seen some very adorable and sweet poms, most seem to be very nippy and some downright aggressive.
