POLL: How Often Do You Receive Your Paycheck?

Updated on October 03, 2014
C.M. asks from Cincinnati, OH
53 answers

1) How often do you and/or your spouse get paid? Weekly, every 2 weeks, twice a month, monthly?

2) If you could choose, what pay schedule would you like to have?

This issue recently came up at work, so I am just wanted to get an idea of what the norm might be. If you don't work for a paycheck, I don't have a problem with that, but this poll just isn't for you.

Thanks for your input 😊

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the feedback. It's interesting to see all of the different perspectives.

Our company recently announced that it is switching from semi-monthly (15th and end of month) to bi-weekly. My husband had been semi-monthly until he changed jobs a few years ago. Now he is paid bi-weekly. I have to say that I prefer the semi-monthly. It was guaranteed to be in my account on a set day of the month. It helped with all of our monthly bills, as I was able set up our budget to pay half on each payday. I understand that the bi-weekly paychecks are very similar, but the 2 extra paychecks throws a wrench in the works. It shifts everything out of whack with due dates and such and I have to rearrange everything. While it all works out in the end, I like the slightly larger paychecks that I would get twice a month, rather then the two "bonus" checks that I would get with an every other week paycheck.

I get paid weekly by my daycare clients.

My husband gets paid every other Friday, regardless of date.
He has, in the past, gotten paid bi-monthly by date (1st and 15) and I hated that. It wasn't always evenly spaced out, if paydates fell on weekends or holidays that messed things up. It was inconsistent and confusing.

My husband gets paid every other week, on alternating weeks at two jobs. I get paid whenever I host a pop-up event or do a catering, as often as every week or as seldom as twice a month. Usually we have money coming in twice a week, once for him and once for me/us (he does the events with me but not usually the caterings).
The best pay schedule for us is making the money ourselves every day in our own restaurant and not waiting for someone else to pay us. In 2015, that is exactly what we plan to be doing!

I get paid every two weeks. My husband gets paid every two weeks - opposite of my paycheck...so it's like we get paid weekly!! LOL!!

I prefer every two weeks. For a LONG time it was the 1st and 15th..but I prefer every two weeks.

I do NOT like weekly. It's also a hassle for payroll to do it every week.

I get paid twice a month. We're not on a tight budget so it doesn't matter but since most bills are monthly, I've always thought being paid monthly makes the most sense. I can see on a tight income the first weekly or biweekly pay checks missed would be tough but after that, it shouldn't matter. People shouldn't spend more in a month than they make so being paid monthly would seem to make it clearer when someone is over spending. But just my opinion.

In general I get paid every other Friday... except that I don't get paid from mid June through August and then for September they pay us a couple of weeks in a row and then don't pay us for three weeks in an effort to get people their first checks quickly.

In my old school district we got paid on the first of the month.

I actually liked monthly better because you had ALL your money and could budget in your own way. I paid all my bills at the beginning of the month (no matter when they were due) and took care of stuff early, so I always really knew what I had. With this two week schedule I still pay most bills at the beginning, but that leaves almost nothing until the next check comes in.

We're on SSDI so we get paid once per month on the 3rd.

I get child support every Tuesday from one of my grand kids dads, he get paid every Friday.

I get child support from the other grand kids dad every other Saturday. He gets paid every other week.

On one hand I like getting paid once per month for the main income, it pays the big bills and buys groceries. Then when I get child support through out the month it pays for things like pull ups, laundry soap I forgot that first week of the month and stuff we run out of.

So my perfect preference would be for one person to get paid once per month and the other adult get paid every week.

I get paid every other Thursday. Love this interval. Love that it's Thursday and not Friday. I used to get paid every week and I wasn't super crazy about that. Every other week gives me sort of like a "bonus" paycheck twice a year when there are 3 pay dates in one month. Oct happens to be one of those months - woo hoo!!

My husband is salaried and gets paid on the 6th and 21st of each month. I hate that schedule. His payday falls on a different day of the week all the time and it makes budgeting tricky sometimes.

I would prefer once a month, right at the beginning (or the last day of the month) so I can pay all the bills for the month in one swoop and know exactly what I have left to work with.

Hubs get's paid every two weeks which is a pain, I have to pay the bills in two shifts. I get paid once a month (the last day).

I used to get only 10 paychecks a year, then 11, since I work in school. This is the first year I will get 12, hallelujah. I hated having to bank a bunch of money for the summer months.

I'm the CFO/Co-Owner of our company and I run the payroll. I schedule hubby to be paid on the 1st and myself and my daughter are paid on the 15th.

So.....we are each paid once a month. This works easier for me as far as my bookkeeping for filing and paying the appropriate taxes on payday.

My preference is bi-weekly. When my husband and I were paid like that, we paid our mortgage that way and made an extra payment per year.

We are both currently on bi-monthly (1st and 15th). I dislike it for so many reasons, but it gets everything paid on time still.

It was also okay when I was paid on the 1st (for the whole month) and he was paid bi-weekly.

He is also retired Navy so on the 1st we get that as well.

Semi-monthly. At my company, hourly employees get paid weekly and salaried get paid on the 1st and 15th.

We do benefits administration and semi-monthly is the most common payroll schedule for our clients.

I like semi-monthly. It works well for splitting up the bills...half the mortgage with each paycheck, a few bills at the beginning of the month, a few at the end.

At my company, the rationale behind two pay schedules is that hourly employees are usually lower wage earners and some live paycheck to paycheck and really need that check every week. Salaried employees usually make more so getting paid twice a month (which saves our company a lot of money vs weekly) isn't a hardship.

My husband gets paid weekly and I think he'd have a hard time moving to something else but like all things, he would eventually adjust.

When I worked full time, we had an option: first of the month; or 1st and 15th of the month.

For people who are good at budgeting and investing, they chose the 1st of the month, as they liked to earn that extra interest.

For people who live pay check to pay check, they go with the later.

That was salaried, I don't know what the hourly staff options were.

And my realtor friends only get paid after a sale, so none of those options.

I am in the small once a month club and like the others said, it took getting used to but now I love it. I impulse spend a lot less because I have to milk the money through and never know when or if I will have an emergency. I buy food once in the beginning of the month and that makes less impulse food shopping.

I make a list for the next month's expenditures.
