my son is 14 months going on 15 and he only says mama when he crys : ( i know its hard. but my doctor told M. that they will talk when they want to
Ok mamas, I don't think I can wait any longer. I have been very very patiently waiting for my son to say mama for the past few months. well, not few anymore because he is 16 months old now! How much longer is he gonna make me wait? He is building his vocabulary with new words every now and then but no way is he gonna say mama , papa :( I keep repeating it to him all the time (more so the last 1 month , when I realized my friend's 9 month old calls her mama) It's so cute and I can't wait to hear the magical words. He calls me 'ga' or 'ka' and his dad in a higher pitch ' kaaaa kaaa'. I don't know where he learnt this or what he means by it. We teach him mama, papa and no he doesn't want to repeat that.He just smiles or shifts his attention to something else that's going on around him. He has been babbling m's, p's , d's right from when he was 6 months old I guess. When I used to hear him go ' mammamamama' or ' dadadada' etc etc I thought very soon he will start calling us that. Now he has stopped doing that and moved on to other words like cat, bye, go etc. Why is he doing this I wonder? How can he learn words he has heard few times and not the two words he hears all the time? Oh and we don't speak english at home , so he has been learning and responding well to both languages. I know he is going to call me mama someday(hopefully soon) but I just needed to vent I guess. The day he looks at me and calls me I am gonna jump with joy.Anybody else have kiddos who made you wait and wait and wait? I hope I am not the only one!

My kids did not say momma until they were closer to 2. They really even didn't start talking until about 2 and said, "ball, look" for months before they said anything else. boys tend to talk a little later than girls, b/c they tend to focus on action skills before language skills. It's wonderful he is being raised bilingual! I would still say to speak English at home too though so he can learn them equally.
my daughter is 2 and just started calling everyone their names ma da grammomom steve (grandpa thanks to aunt rachel) but she is also delayed and expect that your son will be delayed because he is not learning english at home and will have a harder time picking it up along with the other language
It took forever for my son to say mom. He was saying all kinds of stuff before he ever said Mom. Hang in there, it will happen and be even more special because you've been waiting longer than you want.
'M' is a harder sound to make than most people think.
My son first said 'dada', but he was reaching for M. when he said it.
It wasn't long before I'd hear "M., I need you" in the middle of the night when he couldn't sleep.
And then right after his 2nd birthday it's like the flood gate burst and it was talking non stop.
Don't worry!
You should be hearing "Mama" very soon!
Things my son said before mama...
- cat
- thank you
- please
- dada (grr)
- ball
- no
- bye bye
Here's the secret... kids only use words to achieve an end in the beginning. So, if he needs/wants something he's going to figure out how to get it. The fastest way to do that is to verbally ask for what you want.
If you and your husband are always there (not a bad thing) then he doesn't
"need" to request you. Start forcing him to look for you and ask for you. As hard as it is, don't anticipate his every request- make him ask for it, including you! Also, start referring to eachother as mama and dada. He may not be associating that word with who you two are b/c he's not hearing/seeing you attached to it!
Waiting here too! :)
My son is also 16 months.
He used to cry MA, MA when he cried really hard...but doesn't do that anymore.
I realized just a few days ago how much I would love to hear him say 'mama'.
He's my little sweetheart.
Can't wait to hear it too!
