What are your best songs for workouts? I like almost all music. Currently I'm liifting weights and walking but am starting to train for running in a 5K so anything aerobic would be great.

I downloaded this free playlist and it's great. You have to sign up but I think I only got one other email from them and it was another hi energy free playlist.

PS...I got the new iPod Shuffle and it's terrific. So small and lightweight and pretty cheap. Plus, you can make different playlists. I have one for weights and another for jogging.

I think it really depends on your taste in music. I like some of everything, but when I'm working out, I like something with a really good workout beat to it. I like Rihanna's Disturbia and Shut Up & Drive, Lady Gaga's Telephone, Muse's Supermassive Black Hole, Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name....stuff like that is currently on my running/training playlist. If you use iTunes, you can get free downloads for 5k training. There's one called something like "from couch to 5k" and it takes you through a training plan via your ipod. It's not mainstream music, but it's a good training program...teaches you how to slow down and speed up just by reading the tempo of the music. If you google "5k playlist" you can get a lot of ideas from various people, often posted on their blogs. Good luck finding what works best for you!

My running list has a lot from Buddha Bars ( 5 Drink and 7 Sarangi has some of my favorites) and other trance music from Chemical Brothers and the Album Northern Exposure 3. Other favorites are

Disturbed- Forgiven
The Game
NERD - Rockstar
Ok Go - Here It Goes Again
Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To
Collective Soul - Vent
Bond - Fuego
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Rollercoaster
Nightwish - Wishmaster
Madonna - Sorry
Hung Up
Ram Jam - Black Betty
Freemasons - When You Touch Me
Rob Zombie - Spookshow Baby
Hellogoodbye - Here ( In Your Arms)
Blue Man Group - Time to Start
Billy Joel - Pressure
We Didn't Start the Fire

Ok its a strange mix of music, but it keeps me from hearing the blood pump in my ears and from remembering how much longer I really have to go. :-) Good luck

As a neurologic music therapist, I have studied how our brains and bodies respond to music during movement and excercise. There is something that happens in our brain called priming, in that it subconsiously will move our bodies to rhythm while walking/running/moving. So while a song you like to listen to is great, the first thing to concentrate on is tempo (how fast the beat goes.) Chose a song with a beat that you want to run to, the speed at which you want your feet to hit the pavement. Your brain will help you keep running at that speed for a longer duration! Choose songs that maybe start slower, get faster, and then cool down. Also, our bodies respond best (running) to something that has a 2/4 or 4/4 tempo (think march beat). Try it- it works (you can even look it up- it is called RAS or Ryhthmic Auditory Stimulation). Good luck!

I recently discovered Pandora radio which is an internet radio. If you have an Iphone, you can download it for free and search for all kinds of music. I have found the best workout music that way because it just plays song after song based on your search perameters. You can also try Rhapsody online, they give you 25 free song plays so it is a great way to see what you like before you buy it.

I like a lot of variety as well! Some of my workout faves are Moby, Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys and my new fave is a Pandora station called Bollywood Beatdown, it has Middle Eastern dance music thay is just so fun. Good luck!

I saw Ace of Base listed, those are great. Two different ones that I love (and are so different from each other!) are Elvis Costello- Veronica, and Miley Cyrus- Hoedown Throwdown and also Party in the USA. All very peppy!

When I was training for a 5K, and then a 10K, I picked songs with a good beat. I especially put "How bad do you want it?" (artist escapes me right now, country song) and "We will rock you/We are the Champions" so that they would come up near the end when I was starting to get worn out.
