Playground

I was wondering if anyone has encountered unruly kids at the playground and what is the best way to handle it. My 14 month old daughter was on her way out of those giant tunnels and I was helping her out when a 2 year old and a six year old started yelling as loud as they could and throwing mulch or whatever was on the ground into the other end and screaming. I didn't see any parents around. I asked them to stop because of the baby obviously not wanting my daughter to get hurt. Any advice? Thanks girls.

What can I do next?

I know what you mean, I hate when parents don't control their unruly kids. I have a two year old who gets scared easily, if kids are being disruptive, so when that happens to me, I either move to another area, or, if their behaviour is directed at my son, I'll tell them to cut it out. If a parent has a problem with that, I don't care. I think adults have a responsibility to help kids learn about what good behaviour is. Usually, parents don't even notice, or if they do, they probably appreciate it. I'm never mean to the kids, just tell them to stop it, or whatever.

I'm well familiar with the scenerio you've described, as I have a three year old, a one year old and a 3 month old. You handle it with your mom voice, using a simple directive, but don't be unkind. "Hey, mulch is not for throwing! See the baby? You're frightening her. Let's remember to be gentle around the little ones, please."

Any further problems you should say loudly, "Excuse me, where is this child's mother?"

Something just like that happened to us today. We were at the playground I have 2 year old and a 4 year old and my children were playing on the smaller playset and there were a 12 and maybe 14 year old screaming and yelling and standing on top of the playground. I took my kids to the sand box and waited for them to be done. I have said something to others such as do not throw sand you will have to get out. Or you have to go thru the tunnel you cant stay in it. Its amazing how some moms just go and sit and ignore there kids....

You have every right to sday something to someone elses kids - I have asked them were is your mother???

Hello, I'm new to mamasource, and have two of my own (boy, 5, and girl, 7) but I agree with Christine. You don't have to be afraid to speak to the other kids; especially if they are potentially harming yours. I spend a lot of time at the playground, and sometimes I feel like a referee, instead of a mom trying to relax. Often times I see kids who live nearby, and ask where their Mom's are, and they say at home. Those Mom's probably don't expect their kids to do anything wrong, but I would worry about something being done to them...the point is we don't always have to be Mom's to just our kids...ask yourself this-if you saw a Mom with multiple kids playing with one child, while the other was about to get hurt-would you ignore the other child? call the Mom (who might not have time to get to the other child) or reach out a hand to help that child? I hope we would all have that instinct to reach out a hand....then what's wrong with saying "please don't do that" to someone else's child if their parent didn't say it first?

It seems like more and more parents are letting there kids run the show and do whatever they want. It makes my skin crawl to see kids acting this way at playgrounds, not to mention restaurants and other public places. What kind of people are these children going to grow up to be? I say speak up, if you don't, who will? You may feel a little embarrassed and you may get some evil looks from the parents, but who cares? It's a good way to set an example for your daughter on how not to act. Unfortunately, this is a part of life, just like rude adults, so I think those of us who actually care about a kind soceity should do as much as we can to be good people and raise good children. I love it when other parents are amazed at how polite my children are...and all they do is use there manners! Good luck, it's a jungle out there!

Haha, I am the worst when it comes to this. I cannot stand mothers who let their kids run out of control. They shove past the little ones, run up the slides, just sit there at the top or bottom so no one can get down, and the moms sit there talking on cell phones or to friends just ignoring the fact that their brat is terrorizing the whole park. Well, it takes a village, right? lol. I have been known to yell from half way down the park "Hey! Hey! Little boy! Get down off there right now, she was first! your gonna kncok her down!" its somewhat amusing, can be a bit embarrassing, but if it saves my baby (or someone elses baby) from getting hurt, I dont care! I say just do it...who cares what people think.

I have had this happen too! My son was 1 1/2 when this happened. And I think all you can do is ask them nicely to stop, and if that doesnt work, then just leave because you dont want an injured child!
