Pillows

Occasionally my son has an accident and it will even go on to his pillow. We've tried washing the pillows, but that doesn't at all work (big clumpy thing after that). What can we do so we don't have to buy and throw away pillows? This has only happened about 3 times, but we're running out of guest pillows to substitute. We're down to having to buy more. He has only had 1 accident during nap time when he doesn't wear a pull up, and at bed time with a pull up, it's leaked 2 times and gotten on it.

** He definitely needs the pillow, or he wouldn't sleep at all (know that from experience even before 1st b-day. He curls up like I do, which causes leaks to go onto his shirt and very bottom of his pillow.

Thanks.

What can I do next?

couple of suggestions....hope that they may help. You can buy some plastic covered pillows, or use a trash bag to cover the pillow then place two cases on the pillow, where all the plastic is covered. Also they have the cotton on one side and plastic on the other side pads used for bedwetting, you could cover the pillow in that.

Good luck with all of that. It is very frustrating not to be negative toward the child, but remember to praise him when he wakes up dry!!! ( It gets better.)

I, like everyone else, was going to suggest the pillow covers! What I didn't see posted was an idea for getting your pillow to not come out lumpy from the dryer... my Mom gave me a trick for that... you put tennis shoes in the dryer with it, it beats out the lumps!
Take care, K. G

I had a similar situation when my two girls were younger. I have two suggestions for you. The first is that Costco actually makes a very soft down-like pillow that is machine washable. They are sold in a two-pack for about $20. The pillow is the perfect thickness for a little one. My 6 year old loves her pillow.

My next suggestion is to go to the linens/pillow department of your local Walmart and purchase a pillow cover. They make all types. I used to use the plastic zipper type directly over the pillow, then the pillow cover over that. If my daughter vomited or leaked in the bed, then no more ruined pillow. The only drawback I have found to the plastic cover is that it can seem crinkly when you lay on it and the pillow case slips off rather easy. However, they do make waterproof cotton cover that zips on as well, but I have never tried these.

FYI: You can also purchase plastic mattress covers too. You put them on the mattress before the mattress pad that way the wetness won't go all the way through to the mattress and stain it. This was a life saver for me on a couple of occassions when my daughter vomited in bed and it soaked everything. At least we weren't left with a smelly mattress.

Good luck!!

Your best bet is to try and find the plastic pillows. These work best when you are potty training. You can find these pillows at Wal-Mart or Target. These will save your guest pillows and some cash in the long run.

I don't know what everyone else has said, but I know Mattress Firm sells pillow covers (and bed protectors as well) that are cloth, but are treated to keep liquid, dust mites, etc... (pretty much everything) from going through to the pillow/bed. We got one for our bed, and it's working so far. You can throw them in the washing machine too and wash them.

AT walmart and target they have the waterproof pillow cases! they wipe clean very easily after an accident!
As for the pullups the way they are desighned might not be working for your son! My son was the same way and we ended up using goodnights and they work much better and no leaks!
Best of Luck!

Hi M.!
My kids all have plastic pillow protectors on the pillows, and plastic covers on the mattresses as well. I bought them at Walmart and they are very helpful. They make a little noise but save the pillow! Hope that helps!

I bought the pillow protecters, but mine are not vinyl. They are some type of material that is 100% waterproof. I think they are in the hypoallerginic ones. Yes, they work. I put one on each of my kid's pillows. That way if they vomit in their bed and it gets on their pillow, then all I have to do it take off the cover and throw it in the wash. It has saved our pillows. Much easier than washing a pillow. I highly recommend them. I bought mine at Wal-Mart and Target. Hope this helps.

I would suggest vinyl pillow protectors. The pillow is placed inside and zipped up. Add your pillow case and you done. Also, the vinyl protectors easily wipes clean.

We use these and they are awesome. They protect the mattress and pillows but aren't noisy or hot to sleep on like plastic/vinyl protectors. We have these on all our beds and all our pillows. Check out their website and click on US and then products...

I actually ended up with a spot on my mattress...which isn't supposed to happen and the protectors have a guarantee. So, I called them up, got excellent customer service and they sent me out another one to replace the one I had and then paid for me to send the old one to them for them to check it out. If you end up with a "leak", they will clean your mattress or replace your bedding. They really work well but you have to wash them on cold and dry them on low.

I would suggest taking the pillow out of the bed after he is asleep.

At that age he probably does not really NEED a pillow. It sounds like he is not even using it anyway if his bottom end is on it and gets it wet.

If you still need a pillow for him, though. You can get waterproof pillow covers for it.
