When Will I Get My Period After a C-section?

I had a c-section 7 weeks ago and bled for about 4 weeks, which I know is normal. I was wondering when I will start my regular monthly period? How long does it typically take for a woman to get back on a regular monthly schedule? thanks ladies!

Each woman and each pregnancy is different. Are you breastfeeding? I understand breastfeeding delays production of a period in some.

I had a c-section and breastfed my son, It took six months before I had a "normal" period which was fine with me.

Hope this helps & congratulations.

I had a c-section...It took me a while to get my period back. I breastfed for a little while too. I don't think its really that much different than if you had a vaginal delivery. Congratulations!

Hi L., Congratulations mommy. I'm not sure if it is any different with a C-section. I had five vaginal deliveries and if you are nursing you may not get a period until you wean your baby, If you bottle feed it may take 6 weeks to get back to regular periods. One caution, if you breastfeed and do not have your period that does not mean you cannot get pregnant. Enjoy your baby, hold him close, love him to pieces. It should be the best time of your lives. L.,

Congratulations!

Any time. I had mine back the 1st month (thought I was supposed to get a reprieve for nursing? nope!)

Can be anywhere from 0 - 12 months for a nursing mom. I don't believe you get the reprieve if you're not nursing.

Good luck,
M.

Hi L.,
I've never had a c-section, but I do believe that it can take anywhere from 3 months to 6 months to start getting your regular monthly again. Unless you are breastfeeding, it may take up to anywhere from 6 months to a year! But, if you are not going to be using birth control, you can still get pregnant during this time, even without your period.

I breastfed all 4 of my children and my usual was about 9 months before I saw any signs of it, until my last. It took a year for my period to come back.

I would say that it depends on whether or not you are breast feeding. I never got a period while I was nursing any of my four kids. My youngest is 6 mo. who is still nursing and I still have not gotten a period. It may take until you are done nursing to get back to a normal period. However, if you are not nursing then I do not know.

Each pregnancy is different, as well as each person. I had a son 9 weeks ago and by c-section, and I am still waiting for my period to come. I did not breast feed, but it took a long time for my milk to dry up. This is my fourth child and I know that it takes me a while for it to come back. However I am expecting it any time now.

Hi L.,

I don't think the return of your period has much to do with having a c-section. If you are not breastfeeding your period will probably return sooner. I delivered vaginally with both of my boys and with my first, my period returned when he was about 8 months old. He breastfed until 11 1/2 months. My second is 11 1/2 months old now, still breastfeeding, and I still haven't had a period (not complaining!).

It depends on several things. First are you breastfeeding. If so, it can take anywhere from a few months to a yr to get it back depending on how long you nurse. I had c-sections with both my kids, and nursed and I didn't get my 1st period until they were 6 mos old. If your not nursing they will return very quickly. It took almost 6 mos once they started up to get regular again. There really is no correct answer here, each woman is different. And c-section vs vaginal birth has nothing to do with it.

Everyone varies. With my 1st it was 10 months after birth that I got a period. My second I never had a regular period but found out I was pregnant when that baby was 10 months old. So just a warning YOU CAN GET PREGNANT WITH OUT A "NORMAL" PERIOD!" Congratulations on your little one! A.

It varies for everyone. Depending on how often you nurse, it might not come back until you stop breastfeeding.

It seems to vary by person. I had 2 c-sections but breastfed for a while with each baby. First one I stopped breastfeeding/pumping at about 5 months and I think my period was back about a month later. The second baby is only 7 months and no period yet (doing minimal breastfeeding/pumping still).

Hi L.,
No difference in the period returning from a cesarean or a vaginal birth. Are you brastfeeding? If not, it should be relatively soon (and if not by 3 months, call your OB), but if you're breastfeeding, it could be months. Women who exclusively breastfeed have been known to go for a year sometimes with no period - with my last baby, it was 9 or 10 months.
Good luck and I hope that you are enjoying your baby!

How long before you get it again regularly has more to do with whether or not you're breastfeeding. With my first I had a break for 19 months, second was 17 months, and the third only 8 months. All 3 were breastfed past the second birthday (still nursing the third).

I didn't get my period again until I completely stopped breast feeding around 8 months. I had asked my doctor about it and she said every woman is different. I just kept carrying tampons everywhere, just in case!

I breastfed both of my kids, but after the initial bleeding after birth I was back to my normal period schedule. You guys that got a year off from breastfeeding are so lucky!! :)

Hello L.,
Like the other women said if you are not breast feeding your period should resume 6-8 weeks after delivery. If your periods were irregular before this pregnancy, then it may take a little longer for your cycles to resume. However, it should come back soon. I also had a c-section and my period came back 6 weeks later. I hope this helps! Enjoy your little boy!

I think every woman is different and it depends if you are breast-feeding or not (I did). With my first baby (born vaginally), it took me 6 months to get my period back and an additional 2 months for it to arrive on a regular schedule. My second baby was a C-section and my period returned after 5.5 months. My second baby is now 9 months old and my periods are still irregular, although I have just stopped breastfeeding. I'm still waiting for a regular schedule. Be patient and regularity will return soon!
