Has anyone personally or known someone to have parathyroid surgery where they remove the parathyroid? My mom is having this done next month and I just want to know what to expect. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Don't worry! It's a common Thyroid surgery with a speedy recovery. My mom had the surgery a few months ago, right there in Austin! I had the same surgery twelve years ago. Thyroid disorders are often hereditary, so you could possibly have thyroid issues in the future.

You might want to check out the inspire thyroid cancer support group, lots of people on there who have had parathyroids removed.

I did a search this morning on "parathyroid surgery" and found a discussion of someone concerned about having hers removed. Most of the respondents said it was a breeze, hardly any pain and it took away a lot of the symptoms they were having and well worth it. I hope your mom does well!

Had it done several years ago. Home same day. Bit uncomfortable but
not painful. My voice was funny for a few weeks. Good luck.

I had a total thyroidectomy (they removed my entire thyroid) due to cancer. They tried to preserve my parathyroids, so I have 3 of the 4. I must take a calcium supplement twice daily, as your parathyroids are responsible for getting the calcium broken down for your heart, etc. Where is your mother having surgery? I had mine done at MD Anderson in Houston with a Head and Neck surgeon. Please research the surgeon carefully and find out his success rate. How many patients lost their voice, how many can't breathe normally?, etc. The surgeon is in a very tricky spot and if he makes a tiny mistake; it can have devastating, lasting effects, including death. I believe the single most important factor in the success of your Mom's surgery is the skill of the surgeon. Also, pick up a book titled, Your complete Thyroid. It is written by a Dr. and his wife who also has thyroid cancer. It is the best resource that I have. I hope that this will help you. Blessings to you and your Mom.
