I am considering getting the paragaurd IUD. Do you have any experiences with it? I do not like hormone birthcontrol, so I feel this may be a "safer" option for us. We have been very lucky using the rythm method, however we all know it can fail!

What can I do next?

Your IUD can fail, too, and your health is at risk if it does. The rhythm method is old and ineffective. Natural Family Planning or Family Awareness Method is just as effective as other major forms of contraception when used correctly.

Check out or buy "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" for more information.

Good luck in your decision.

Hi A.-

I have had the Paraguard IUD for almost 2 years now and have found it to be an easy and hassle-free method of birth control. I love it. Getting to placed was not the funniest thing, but it didn't take long and I have had no problems what so ever. I would totally recomend it has a hormone free from of birthcontrol. Good luck!

A....I have the mirena iud and LOVE IT. No worries about "getting it on" and having to worry about 9 months later :o) the first couple days after getting it i cramped slightly but nothing like monthly cycle. Now, I don't have a cycle at all and I Love that even more! It's the best thing I've ever done as far as BC. But to each their own!

Good morning A.,
I have the paraguard and I love it. I do not have to worry about anything and I do not have to track my days or cycle.
The first few months were heavier bleeding but that ends after month 3 or 4. I really take comfort in knowing that my body is naturally releasing eggs and I do not have any synthetic hormones in my system controling my moods. I would recommend getting one.

I had one and I didnt like it. I had periods every other week and they were really heavy. The doctor couldnt figure out why it was happening, but once I took my IUD out I went back to normal. I wouldnt recommend it.

I have one and love it, no pill to take every month, no hormone side effects. I got it because I was nursing and it worked fantastically. After my girls weened, I got my first period and had cramps which were a little more intense than I used to experience, I think, I say I think because I can't remember for sure. I do know that the first three months I had increased menstrual flow, and looong cycles, but after that everything evened out to normal.

I have the IUD called Mirena. I love it. I think it has been the best birth control method for me. I have been wearing it for 4 years. It lasts for 5 years. It has significantly reduced the cramping and the bleeding. I stopped using tampons and pads. All I need is pantiliners. Hooray!!!
Also, i don't have to worry about taking anything or forgetting anything. I just go annually to get a check up. It doesn't bother sexual activity neither. My cycle still comes monthly. It has skipped 2 times in 4 years for 2 months. The dr. actually mentioned that my period could stop completely. But it hasn't.
I highly recommend it!!!!

I love Paraguard! It didn't hurt too bad when they put it in because it was just right after my son was born and I guess that is the easiest time to do it. A little cramping at first and I bled alot the first 2 periods but everything is fine now and my period seems to be back to normal. It is a relief to not worry about missing pills or refills or anything like that. I also like the fact that it is non hormone birth control! Good luck!

I had one in for nine years (this was before they decided to take them out sooner) and didn't have any problems at all. I loved it! No hormone fluctuations beyond what I would normally go through. Couldn't feel it. Didn't affect intercourse. Was 100% effective.

I have used Paragaurd for over 4 years now. I didn't have the horrible cramps described, mine went away, and my periods lessened to only using pantiliners. Then after the 4 1/2 year mark I started getting little cramps again but nothing terrible. I love it. No Hormones. No condoms! yea!!

I was considering the Paragard IUD (copper IUD) and when I talked to my OB-GYN about it, he told me that that it would not be a good idea for me only because the uterus identifies it as a foreign object and will have more cramps and contractions to get it out, which for some women is ok, but I already have really bad periods and cramps so it would intensify it, I also learned it doesn’t necessarily stop fertilization, it only makes the uterus a toxic environment and prevents Implantation (which may be the case in the Mirena IUD also). I do like the Idea of hormone free devices but I couldn’t handle the cramps, so I choose the Mirena IUD and absolutely loved it, No periods, no cramps (well, mild cramps with spotting monthly but not enough for even a panty liner) total freedom, I hope what ever you choose, you love it and experience that type of freedom, its so great.

I have used this IUD after I had my first child. I just had it taken out so we can try and have kids. I loved it because of no hormones. I had a bit heavier periods then I used to, but the Gyno told me the before I had it so I didn't mind it. I only cramped for a day or two after the procedure was done. When they put it in it was more like a bit of uncomfortable feeling like I needed to go pee. And then a pinch right at the end, but that was the only pain there was for me. I loved using an IUD because I didn't have to worry about taking any thing or getting a refill. I used the IUD close to 2 years, and I would do it again.
