Paper Mache Mask

Hi moms,
I'm heading up a paper mache mask project for an upcoming kids camp. I've only ever used balloons for forms, but have just heard of using foil to make the face forms. Looking for moms who have done this and know how well it works. Does the foil remove easily after the paper mache dries? The kids will be wearing these so I don't want foil on the inside and don't really have time to line the inside either. We have two different day sessions to build the masks, then another to paint them.

Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

yep - the things I've read and seen (You Tube) have said to use 3 or 4 layers depending on if you use heavy duty etc and then to also place a wad of balled up newspaper under for more support as the kids are working on it. My main concern is IF the foil form removes easily......otherwise it looks like a pretty cool idea! thanks!

Angela - we probably could but we want the kids to really make the whole thing from stuff. And they start this Sat. :)

Yes! one of the things I saw suggested to use cooking spray.

Thanks everyone for the input. We're going to go ahead and use the foil forms tomorrow morning. I figure if it doesn't stick to balloons, it shouldn't stick to foil either, right!? idk, sounds legit. The heavy duty foil seem strong enough if tripled up and then a wad of newspaper is placed beneath for extra support also while the kids are working on it. Don't worry, the kids will be closely supervised so they do not cut themselves. This is for a martial arts Ninjutsu class and all us coaches know how to be safe around sharp objects ;) lol Thanks again!!!

They have cardboard masks at Party City. Could you use that?

I am wondering if a coat of Vaseline...or even cooking spray on the foil would help with that.

Do you have time for a trial run??

Sounds fun! DO post back what works.

I would see if you can get some cheap plastic masks and then paper mache on top of that. I recall doing something like this in 7th grade and it worked well…I think! It was a long time ago! ;-)

I would probably spray some cooking spray on top of them just in case, but this seems cheaper and WAY easier than making a base out of foil.

I noticed above this post, Amazon is advertising some masks, that could also be used to form with the foil.

Keep in mind, the heavy duty aluminum foil, can easily cut fingers and faces, so remind them to be careful while handling.

You can use Vaseline on a face and paper mâché on top. They do this a lot in art classes. Wig heads also can work. Cover with Saran Wrap or foil before covering in paper mâché.

Not speaking from experience, but I imagine if you use the foil, you might have to use a few plys, and might stil need the balloon for support. Foil, is pretty maleable, and can bend/ get distorted as the kids smooth the paper mache over the mask.

Best,
