Ow, My Wrist Hurts.....

So I had my son on the 18th of September. They put in an I.V. and all that jazz. After my release my wrist started hurting around the 20th or 21st and has not stopped. Some days it does not hurt that bad and some days it does. Do you think it could have been from the I.V. Everyone thinks I am crazy and that I just strained it some how. But it's been 3 weeks and it still hurts. Should I go to the dr. or should I wait it out. I would just hate to waste the co pay for something they can't fix or simply be advised to wear a wrist wrap. Has anyone experienced this. It hurts if I try to get up from a sitting position and put weight on it and it also hurts twisting it in different directions. I'd say the pain goes from a 4-6 on some days. Please help.

What can I do next?

Congratulations K.,

It sounds to me like your IV was probably just a tad bit too close to a nerve. It can take quite a while for nerves to heal but if it continues for too much longer, I would definately call your OB and talk to the nurse at least. You could ask them if you should have it checked out or they could tell you when they would be concerned with the symptoms. As a nurse that places needles in patients daily, I see it all the time. Sometimes when you stick a patient and they get a feeling like a little electric shock, you know you have gotten close to a nerve. At times you won't notice it but over the course of a day or two with an IV, you can irritate a nerve and it will need some time to heal. In the meantime, enjoy your new family addition and tell everyone for me that says you are crazy that I said to bring you some ice cream and hush. The more rest you give it, you might find it more comfortable after a few days. Consider it like a strained nerve, like you do when you have a sprained ankle or something. You might try heat or cold packs to see which one helps you most but not for more than 20 minutes at a time. Nerves take longer to heal than most other body parts so remember to give it time. Then in a few days, start gently exercising it and see if it is better.

Hey K.,

Sounds like they nicked your nerve when they did the IV. I go to Physical Therapy 3 times a week for an ankle injury and there was just another patient there talking about it with the physical therapist, and both the patient and the physical therapist have had similar situations. In their case, it was a nerve and it can take months to get better (I know you didn't want to hear that!) and back to normal. She did not recommend anything to make it better except for time.

So if that is what is wrong with your wrist, I don't think they will be able to do anything for you. But if you think it is something else, you may want to check it out. A catch 22 really.

I hope for the best for you and CONGRATS on your new baby!!! How exciting!

My experience was similar after I had my youngest. Turned out the skin and the vein inside my wrist became a little infected. It healed after a few days but your wrist shouldn't still be hurting you after this time. Please, please call your obgyn and ask to speak with the nurse on duty. I'll say prayers for your quick healing! And, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

I would have it checked. Pain after having an IV is not unusual but I think this has gone on long enough and I'm sure you agree. Pain is our bodies way of telling us that something is wrong. We have too much to do as mother's and wives to risk letting something that could be easily repaired turn into something nasty!

It has been three weeks. Go in. You never know what it can be. Is there redness or anything. All I can think of is staph infection. Go get it checked out. Better safe than sorry. Good luck!

Are you sure its not carpal tunnel? I get that. Sometimes have to wear a wrist brace to bed. My chiropractor showed me how to stretch the muscles in my fore arm to relieve it.

Mine hurt after I had my gall bladder surgery. Some IV drugs can burn the inside of your veins. My doc said it is a form of phlebitis and it took months to finally go away.

This happened to my aunt after she had her last child. The fluid they were putting in her IV was going into her skin rather than in her vein and her entire arm was swollen for over a month. Her doctor didn't do anything, it went away on its on. It wouldn't hurt to call your doctor and let them know. Unless you have a fever or have drainage fron the site or it is really red they may not do anything.

I think that you should see some one. I could be phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) r/t to your iv or iv meds.

It can be that the meds agrivated your veins or they stuck you by a nerve. It sounds more like a nerve because of the length of time. Congrats on your baby, and tell everyone your not crazy.
