dears, this is on behalf of my brother, a single dad with two teenage girls 13 and 15. he does a lot of traveling with his job and has to do frequent overnighters. he wants someone....not a nanny, i guess, maybe an au pair? companion? moat guardian?......to stay with the girls when he's gone. obviously they're pretty self-sufficient so it would just be a matter of doing starbucks or hanging-out dates as needed, and being there at night 'just in case.'
and, of course, warding off boys.
:)
he thinks $80 per night is sufficient. since there is no housework or baby-care needed, would you all agree? it sounds a bit light to me, but i've never encountered this situation before.

So What Happened?

you guys rock! thanks so much for the feedback. he found a great young woman and an equally wonderful back-up, both responsible and with terrific references. apparently this is indeed a sufficient wage for the work and the area.

80 bucks a night sounds like a great wage for the right, responsible person.
He should post a notice at the college, that would be a good spot to start. Just make sure he does good interviews with the prospects..... I'd want a background check of some sort if this person is going to be staying the night in his home.
Is there a close neighbor that could benefit from the money and then be handy right next door?

i think that is completely fine, $80 with no taxes is a decent amount of money, but you must be sure to explain the needs, to both the new hire as well as the girls.

i would just be very careful in finding this person, as you want to find someone so responsible, that they wont end up me exposing the girls to their friends(men), and you dont necessarily want a "friend" for them. with the way the economy is, you could probaly find someone older, and more mature. good luck.

Sounds like a great job for a local college student. I think $80/night is fine.

I would be more than willing to do it for that much! I used to dog sit for my dad's boss, and he paid me about that, plus food... I would suggest finding a trustworthy college student willing to stay the night. That adds the benefit of a positive role model for the girls. :)

Great wage in my opinion. I also believe he should hire a woman. I like the idea of the collegue student as Julie S. and Grandma T. suggested. Some babysitters charge $10 dollars per hour and they have to do a lot of work. It sounds fair. Good luck to your brother!

I'm going to go against the grain here I guess lol. I don't think $80 is enough. are we talking 8 hours or 30? over night could imply that the person will be hired to watch the girls regardless of their ages from after school till the next day? Is she responsible for during the day while they are at school incase of emergency? I am a nanny for a family I make $10 an hour for before and after school. I make aprox $50 a day for about 4 and half hours. So if your talking pick the girls up at school and stay with them till the next morning at the very least we are talking about 14 to 15 hours. and yes some of it will be sleeping time but it will sleeping time in someone elses home making sure said girls are not on phone / computer / tv all night, home work done fixing meals of some sort etc. also starbucks / mall run? so in my car with my gas? So nope for me not enough. It would probably be $125 to $150 a night.
