My son did this once...I was told to flick his cheek with my finger which I did. He yelled but was fine and hasn't done it since. I'll admit when he cried because I hur thim I welled up myself, truely a "this is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you" moments.

Best wishes!

1. When that happens, you immediately take her off the breast (if she's not already off) and you may need to insert your finger to break the latch. That's one of the wonderful "side effects" of nursing - these kids have strong jaws.
2. My experience with my two boys is that only happened when they were done nursing and were actually dozing off - they would clench their teeth, so I just learned to pay attention to when they stopped sucking and would stick my finger in there to break the suction before they could bite down. I did sometimes get my finger bit, but that's far less painful than the boob.
3. If she's purposefully doing it because she gets such a wonderful reaction from you. Then you do 1 and don't let her nurse for a short period (i.e., that session is done when she bites). She's old enough to learn.

Good luck.

I agree with Mary, break suction, take baby off breast, use a stern voice say no, that hurts and end session.
Also, I was taught that when you see the bite coming or when they first clench, instead of pulling baby away, press baby towards the breast until she releases on her own...stuffing her mouth with more breast! Gently and within reason...its not punishment...its a way to get her to open her mouth and stop biting! See if anyone else has heard of this one...its been a while...
Keep up the good work!

First time: Un-latch her, try to look her in the eyes, and say "Owch, that hurts Mommy." Then keep nursing.
Second time: Repeat.
Third time: Un-latch, say "Owch that hurts Mommy" and stop nursing for 15 minutes, even if she cries. The point is to associate biting with an undesirable result.
A friend who is a lactation consultant gave me this tip and it's worked wonders for tons of other women. Good luck!

My daughter did that once. I smushed her face in toward the breast and she let go. In a stern voice I told her no biting and gave her to daddy while I took a break. One other time she started to bite down and I sternly told her no. It suprised her enough that she stopped and looked up at me. My son would bite down when falling asleep or if he was teething hard. I did the same things and he learned to not bite down when falling asleep. Good luck...it does stop.
