I have an active 4 year old boy who likes to learn all about planets/solar system and moon. He knows all the alphabets and numbers, however not much into writing yet. He currently goes to a good day care, but I think he needs to in a more learning environment. I am looking at a structured environment for him to learn to write as much as he reads through word recognition. I am looking for some advice from other moms' about Small Beginnings Montessori or such other schools in Overland Park/Leawood area. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

I went with Primrose School of Leawood, because of proximity to where we live and some great references from my neighbours whose children went there. We tried to set appointments with Small Beginnings but the first time two years ago, when we went to see Small Beginnings, they said they did not have any openings in that age group (which I would have liked to know before driving across town to be there personally) next time this year, I had an urgent Doctor's appointment and my son had seen some of his friends at Primrose. I decided to take him there as that is what he liked. I like the teacher in his class and he is learning for his age. If I keep up my playful teaching at home, I am planning not to worry too much about Montessori anymore.

Thank You so much for all the responses it was great to read your opinions and Good luck to you and your kids.

I have 2 1/2 yr old that currently goes to Small Beginnings. He LOVES it!!! We interviewed about 4 or 5 in southern Johnson County and are very particular about where my son goes, who he associates with and what he's learning. We choose Small Beginnings as there's so much extra to do. Each class has it's own playground and I love the security system they have set up. There have music classes, sports, pre-kwon do classes, etc. for an extra fee. But my son want's to do it soooo bad so we will.

I think we made the right choice. I also have info on a few others if you would like to know. You can email me at ____@____.com this helps.

I homeschool my daughter and it allows me to teach her all day about things that interest her. She excels in drawing, she is at least 2 grades ahead of where she is supposed to be. I think that if I had put her in a school or a daycare the teachers wouldn't have allowed her to excel in what she was really good at. With homeschooling I could let her draw as much as she wanted to and we would get an art curriculum from Nelson Atkins Art Museum. Because I knew what interested her I could tie in art into all of her subjects and she would understand it better. All children think differently and they learn differently, a teacher teaches the same thing to all of their children and teaches it the same way. I think that is how some children fall behind in certain subjects. But with homeschooling if I think she is falling behind I can just swich my method until I can find out what works for her. If you can't homeschool, which a lot of people can't, try integrating science and the solar sysytem into his writing when your at home. It takes a lot of creativity and work but when you see your child put things together in his mind it is really exciting. There is a ton of easy homeschooling curriculum out there and you can make your home a place for learning.

I have a three you old little boy that has been at Small Beginnings since he was 19 months old. I have been very amazed at how much my child has learned and advanced in the time he has been there. The facility is very nice. I have been very happy with most of the teachers we have had, but my only disappointment has been the turnover of the teachers and aids that have seemed to happen in the time we have been there. The turn-over has been at the younger level however. I have a friend that has had two children go through the 4 year old classes her and she loves it and loves the teachers in that program. I have heard wonderful things about the 4 year old and Pre-K teachers. I believe they have a great and challenging program and lots of activites and options for the kids. I would do a tour and observe the classes and meet the teachers and see what you think.

It's funny you should ask this question.....my twin sons are going to be starting at Small Beginnings in the fall. They will be 3 at the end of September, so they will be in the 3-4 year old class (dinosaur room, I think?). I would also be very interested to hear from anyone whose children will be going there, or have been there!! We have toured the school, and were very impressed with the facility and it's offerings. Unfortunately, I don't personally have any experience with the school or teachers(yet), and would welcome any information. I am really looking forward to starting my boys for a couple days a week. I think it will be good for them to spend some time away from me (and vice versa)!:)
