Oops! Toddler Small Burn on Skin Above Lip from Hot Food

Dear Mommas, My 22 month old son accidently ate a small piece of hot chicken and burned a bit of the skin above the lip. It is a bit red. i put on ice and aloe vera. Anything else I should do? Is this normal? I feel very guilty that I did not teach him better to blow on his food (even though the food was not that hot) or that I put not totally cooled food on his plate.

Any advice and support would be greatly appreicated. (Please no criitcism).

Jilly

Jilly- If it makes you feel better my toddler fell off the stairs when I ran upstairs to grab something and had a purple bump on one whole half of his forehead that suck out a 1/2 inch. People all over town were stopping me to ask what happened to my poor child! :)

Accidents happens even when we try our best to don't beat yourself up too much! Keep an eye on it and if it doesn't look better within a few days you might want to have his doc look at it. With burns it should start to look better pretty quickly if it is not serious.

Good luck to you!

Your local pharmacist might recommend the best thing. Take your child, show them the burn. They don't hold their advice only for over the counter meds. Some might tell you that a prescription cream from the doctor is best or that something more natural given so often helps. They are far more trained than they get to use their education -- unless asked.

I had a really bad burn a couple of months ago that I had to see a doctor for. She said to keep it moist as much as possible with neosporin or vaseline. Because it's close to his mouth, I would just put a bit of vaseline on it and keep it moist until it heals. If it's just red and there isn't an open wound it should be all better in a couple of days. If he acts like it's sore or it hurts give him a bit of Motrin.

Don't feel bad, it was an honest mistake. It's happened to me before!

It is not only normal, but expected that little bumps, bruises, and misshaps will happen to your toddler. Nothing to worry about, and you should never feel guilty over something little or it will make you crazy because stuff happens all the time, and that is totally normal! Their bumps get bigger as they do, so just give them a cuddle. You did everything right. You cannot be perfect with a little one, even if you are prefect, and nobody is.

Banish the guilt and feel good about your mothing skills. I cannot imagine any mom criticising you for not teaching your child better to blow on their food! It will not be the first time that he gets something in his mouth that is too hot, if nothing else, he just learnd what too hot really means!

Go to the park and have fun, no guilt!

Hi Jilly, if I could only count the times that I have beat myself up over things the kids have done....don't worry about it comes with the territory. Burns hurt though so I wanted to reply quickly. Two things you may want to try, vitamin E oil or orajel. It has a numbing agent in it, the only thing I'm not sure of is the fact that the skin is exposed. I'd call the dr's office 1st and ask but I use that alot. I keep that and neosporin in my purse for any owies they get while we're out. Hope that helps!
