Being pretty fair is not fun in Texas! One thing I have always used was Noxema, it really helped with the cooling.
Hello all, we just spent 4 days in Port A and had a fabulous time with our kids. Yesterday, our last day, we spent all day in the sun with no shade in sight. And no one told me until after the fact that salt water washes off sunscreen faster than any other type of water. SO - needless to say -- we are all pretty cooked! Can anyone tell me the best way to soothe the burn and take that fire feeling out of it everytime we brush up against something? There are no blisters or anything like that but we sure are red! I've been using green aloe spray, a blue menthol ointment and we all took baths in the Aveeno oatmeal stuff. Nothing seems to be working all that well. HELP!!
Thank you all so much for the quick responses. I tried the vinegar - although I only had apple cider vinegar. And I only tried it in one spot to test it out first. It did nothing for me. I'm not sure if that's because it was too late - we were already 3 days into the burn - or if the vinegar was too old (can that happen?) or if it just wasn't a good idea to use the apple cider kind. Anyway, we finally made it to town and bought some Solarcaine spray at Walmart and that seemed to help us all the most. So now we are just dealing with the peeling process. And I've learned my lesson the hard way that even baby sunscreen at 50 SPF can't keep you from burning in the hot Texas sun!
Being pretty fair is not fun in Texas! One thing I have always used was Noxema, it really helped with the cooling.
I buy the aloe gel and keep it in the refrigerator. It feels great going on and they use it anytime they want!
Aloe vera straight from the plant. Do you know anyone that sells Amway, their LOC has worked for my family for years. The LOC has many other uses also, it has a coconut base. If you don't have the aloe vera plant and live near League City, I do have plenty I could share with you. ###-###-####. Any one else needing aloe vera can get in touch with me for a plant or two.

I did not know that either about sea water J.!
I found this web-link for you. Straight from Mayo Clinic:

Ouch! Apply ice cold whole milk to the skin with cotton balls to cool and add moisture to the skin to keep it soft and prevent blistering and tightness. It's cheap and safe for the children. For pain relief spray on Solarcaine which is OTC and has numbing properties. Good luck!
So sorry about the sunburns. The sun can be brutal!
Try white vinegar. It's kinda stinky, but it works for us. Just rub it on with your hand or cotton ball. The vinegar helps to dry out the sunburn faster and it helps with the burning.
Hope this helps! I'm forever getting sunburns and that's what I use. I would also suggest the kids go without clothes for a couple of days. Clothes just hurts when you have a sunburn.
Blessings,
V.
Hey J.,
Take white vinegar and dab it all over the sunburn with cotton balls. This really works to remove the stinging fire feeling. It's stinky but it works!
I'm very pale and always sunburn terribly. I used to swear by aloe vera gel. Earlier this year, I got a bad sunburn and my husband insisted that I use vitamin E oil instead. I never hurt!!! I did it again recently with the same results. I was amazed at how well it worked.
I've read a lot of the advice you have received from others. They all have great ideas. As a sunburn veteran of many, many experiences, I have tried most of the suggestions. As a young person, I used Noxema and cold compresses. Now I use the goo from the aloe vera plant when I can stand to touch the burn. When the brun is so bad that toucning it sends me into orbit, I use Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera First Aid Spray which I found at Wal-Mart. Stay in a cool environment, drink lots of liquids, and put only very soft 100% cotton next to the areas.....mens undershirts are great.....the bigger the better.
I get sunburned quite often myself and out of everything the most efficient at taking the sting away and get my skin looking normal is Aloe vera gel stright from the leaf! So if you can get a hold of a fresh aloe plant then do so!!! HTH!!!
I'd give everyone tylonal for the next 24-36 hours, children's for the kids and regular strength for you and your husband.
Drink water... No alcohol for you for your hubby since alcohol is excreted through the skin... Better to give it a rest. (Besides, you shouldn't mix tylonal and alcohol anyway.)
Roll up dry towels/washclothes and put them in the freezer. Then wrap the cold towels around the particular burn area, or lay on them. Don't get the towels damp or wet beforehand, since ice burns skin when on direct contact. You just want something to cool the burn and cold towels should help.
Once upon a time, I used to do the hot shower thing after a sun burn. Dermatologists say that is one of the worst things you can do with a burn. If you can't stand lukewarm showers, try warm/cool sponge baths instead. Also, consider a mild soap since you don't want anything too drying.
My experience is that blisters might appear 1-3 days after the initial burn day...
As there are 35 previous responses I did not read them all...What I did read seems like a lot of interesting and good advice...I just wanted you to know that aloe can be bought over the counter in any pharmacy with lidacane in it. Lidacane is a pain numbing topical medication. It is often used in medical offices when a doctor needs to numb the skin before a procedure. The combination of the cooling/healing properties of the aloe and the numbing effects of the aloe help a lot on any type of burn, but especially on sun burns. My daughter has used it and LOVES it. i have used it with lots of success as well. It is not a permanent pain reliever, but it sure helps out and can be reapplied when the pain is back.
Good Luck and I hope you all heal soon.
Ice! I know it's not the most comortable thing, but ice totally helps. You need to draw out the heat of the burn. Use bags of ice or ice packs. When you feel better then use aloe vera. NO lotion - it traps in the heat and makes the burn last longer.
Really random, but for other types of burns take a piece of banana and spread it on the burn. I haven't tried it on a sunburn, but it works for the others. And I'm not kidding, it's amazing. It really works.
I read a few of the responses and didn't see what I'm about to suggest...Noxema. Craziest thing I've ever heard, but it actually works in taking the pain out of the burn. My husband was the one who told me about it. Just apply the cream and leave it a while and rinse off. Should help pretty much right away, and I don't think it'll dry you out worse than you already are.
Hope this one helps too.
the 2 most important things are keep yourself hydrated (drink LOTS of water!) and keep your skin hydrated (pure aloe works best). avoid creams, as they can lock in the heat on your skin and make the burning sensation worse! i would recommend the blue aloe vera that has lidocaine in it (the lidocaine is a numbing agent that will take away the sting). i forget what brand that aloe is, but you can't miss it since it's bright blue LOL
other than that, it will just take time to heal =( if your kids are really miserable, try giving them motrin or tylonol before bed so they can sleep easier.
next time you go swimming, no matter what the bottle says, try and remember to re-apply sunscreen every 2-3 hours, and use the highest SPF possible, and try a sport sunscreen (they usually stay on better in the water). oh, and apply the sunscreen 30 min. before going in the water so it has time to soak in!
and make sure while your sunburns are healing to lather on the sunscreen, even if you are just going for a walk!
(my hubby and i were stationed in hawaii for a few years, so i learned a lot about sunburns LOL) hope you feel better soon!
Cold Yoghurt, Aloe-Gel, Vitamin E-Oil (Walgreens). If it is really bad I mix it up and apply several times.
Sometimes something stronger is needed, because the burns are so severe and cause an inflammation then you need something anti-inflammatory like Tylenol (!!!!Careful with the Kids!!!!!Tylenol can damage the liver!!!). Rather be careful: If nothing really helps you should go and see a doctor!
Try taking a very hot shower, as hot as you can stand it. It seems to actually pull the heat out and makes your skin a little less sensitive. The shower hurts a bit, but if you can stand it it will help.
Try vinegar on the kids. Not real sure if that one works too well, but that is what my mom has always told me to do. Banana Boat makes a sunburn spray that we have found to be very soothing. It is blue and comes in a pump spray bottle.
Best of luck! I hope at least one of these ideas helps you.
Solarcaine spray always worked for me when I would get burned.
Good Luck,
K.
Well you can find it at walmart and it has Lydocaine or something like that and it will help the burning and also don't use the spary or anything but Gel. Iknow you have to wash your hands afterwards but well it gets the job done and helps faster just look for the type with the Lydocaine because thats helps the burning also you need Aloe in it and other stuff but it will still work!!Hope this helps!!
P.S. keep it in the fridge it will be colder and help the burning more!!Good Luck!!
pour on white vinegar....it stinks & is very cold when you use it, but it takes the stinge out.
I used aloe gel found in WalMart (or probably other stores too). It was in the pharmacy section but may be in the sunscreen section too. Works good although I don't know of anything else that'll take the sting out but it made mine feel better. Good luck!
use sayna for sunburn.
Time will heal all the wounds....lol..meanwhile take a leaf off the aloe plant and peal the outer skin off. The gello kind of material is very soothing to the skin. You can keep the leaves in the refrigerator to have more cooling effect. Other thing is glycerin, it is available in the pharmacy section at Walmart. it is very soothing and safe at the same time. Hope it helps.
It's pretty stinky, but vinegar works great. You can put it on a sponge and apply it to the burn.
omg i know how you feel.i went swimming and didnt put anything on.my upper arms burned soooo bad.it hurt just to sleep with a shirt on,and i was very sensitive to the touch.luckily my grandmother had an aloe vera plant and it helped me.goodluck!!
Stay cool. It is like any other burn. You just need to "get the heat out." A cool swimming pool (at night or in the shade)or a cool shower is best. I have also found that any WHITE aloe cream will work best. Keep it in the fridge. I have never gotten much releif from the green stuff. I would wear whatever matched the tanlines and keep the air conditioning on. Good luck. It will probebly take a couple of days, but just stay cool.
vinegar is what my mom used with me and although it is stinky, it takes out the heat
There's a product called Pure Aloe Vera, I think, it's great. You can find it at places like Target and Walmart. It's either clear or a green color. We put ours in the fridge so its cool and soothing. Try it, I think it will work wonders for your situation.
i got sunburned really bad this summer and i went to walmart and bought banana boat after sun aloe vera lotion and it worked great within 24 hours the burning was almost completely gone...good luck
Vinager takes the sting out and it is worth the smell. Then Aloe plant. Nothing else works for salt water burns! This is straight from a MD in town and I tried it and it is true. It really works.
Mom with 7 kids. Good luck in healing
Hi! I'm no doctor, but Bath and Body Works body splash always gave my family relief. My husband wasn't too keen on the idea at first, but was welcoming it later. Any scent of course! They say the amount of aloe and fatty alcohols is what helps the relief and you smell good! And for those sensitive areas, like the nose and ears try mint toothpaste! The constant mint cooling feeling helps for sunburns and minor burns from other things! I used colgate total. Hope this helps your red little family:)
hope you're feeling better, have you tryed vinegar? that ysually helps a lot. good luck. W.
Aloe, several stores carry the liquid, put in the ref. and keep it cold, apply after shower and several times during the day. This is the best that I have found not only for sun burns but also for kitchen burns. Please do your self and and family and get some NOW.
Mentholatum ointment. The stuff you use for colds. It doesn't sting, unless there is an opening in the skin. Apply it generously on the sunburn and leave. It draws the heat out and will also help keep the skin moisturized.
Johnson's Baby lotion works GREAT!!
See if you can get your hands on some fresh aloe vera. I have a plant and will give you some if you are nearby (I'm in NW Austin...Avery Ranch). ____@____.com pieces off a plant and slice them lengthwise. Apply the fresh "goo" directly to the skin and let it dry completely. It will feel tight at first but that yucky sensation goes away rather quickly. Apply it frequently! Several times a day, at least. The real stuff is so much better than the green gel you buy in the store.
Dont know if it will work but try an oatmeal bath. my grandmother use to make a luke warm bath and pour regular outmeal in it and have me soak in it for a while.
Hi J.,
My son had a really bad sunburn not too long ago and I used lavender and peppermint essential oils on him. The peppermint took away the heat and the lavender healed his skin so fast! If you want to find out more about these oils you can contact me. There are oils for just about every aliment you might run into with a family. I'm happy to help!
<>< S.
this will sound strange, but I promise it works. Boil a very strong batch of tea~just regular caffinated tea, Lipton, Tetly, or even off brand. Let it cool (you can refrigerate it if you'd like) and soak a wash rag in it and just dab it all over...you can use the tea bags too. I have used this method every time I, or anyone I know, has had a burn. I really hope this helps, and I am sorry I didnt get back to you sooner! If nothing else, if it happens again, you have a weapon of defense!!
Get well soon!!!!
J.,
Aloe vera gel is the best thing to soothe a sunburn.
Well, I have four children and we spend a lot of time in the sun during the summer. Put vinager on a wash cloth and pat it on the burn. It takes the sting out. We also use the green sunburn spray with Lydocaine in it. Hope these tips help you guys. I know how bad sunburns can hurt.
tylenol and solarcaine. it looks like green gel - it has aloe and a topical pain relief.
Ouch! Been there. You should try something with lidocaine in it. Dermoplast works really well, and there are some aloe products that have it in them. Also keep the burn cool. I will sometimes use sheets that I put in the freezer, you can use a pillow case for smaller children. Because as long as that burn in still hot, it's going to keep burning. DO NOT use anything oil based. No vaseline, cooking oil, butter, or neosporin. That only causes the burn to keep cooking. So cool off and get some lidocaine and ya'll should feel better soon.
Hey J. I had sun poisoning once and the hospital had me put cold milk all over me with a rag. It takes the heat out and feels so good. The best thing for a bad sunburn, B.
There is a medicated product that used to be called "Solarcaine" that contains a topical anesthetic that has always worked well for my family. You might ask the pharmacist were you shop for a recommendation or if that product I mentioned is even made any more. (I'm pretty sure it is, but perhaps under a slightly changed name. I still use it for kitchen burns.)
I remember using white vinegar to cool a sunburn as a kid. Sat in the bathtub and dabbed it on gently with a cotton ball. Cooled us down. Smell like a salad after but it offered relief. Noxema creme was a staple as well.
Hope that helps. Take care.
I only use Noxema. I apply a very thick layer. It instantly cools and feels great. A few hours later the sunburn will start to hurt again. I reapply a very thick layer again on top of the first layer. I do this througout the day then at night I usually take a cold shower to get all or most of it off. Then I reapply again before going to bed. Hope this helps you.
Aspirin and refrigerated solarcaine (or any aloe vera gel). My husband is an athletic trainer (and in the sun all day) and when he has sunburn he LATHERS on the cold aloe vera gel (it absorbs in a few minutes) and takes aspirin. Apply the gel often and by later that evening you should have a nice tan and the burn should go away.
Burn gel. It's the only thing that really soothes the pain of any minor burn. I keep some in the kitchen, but it works great on a sunburn too! There are different brands. The one that I have is Water Jet Burn Jel. It works instantly. Hope this helps. :-)
i used the blue aloe with the lnacaine in it.....it numbs the skin for a while....you can also use just plain lanacaine it works wonders.
The one with Lidocaine gives the best temporary relief in my experience. But, it's too late for this probably, but a few weeks ago I burned too. I put on the aloe vera gel, etc. Then I remembered that I had ordered a Miracle Salve cream. So, I tried it! Done, no problem. I ordered it from Beeyoutiful.com. It's not cheap, but I've used it a lot for many things this summer and it doesn't even look used yet. So, it should last you. I was a pleasantly surprised skeptic.
You will not believe how well the vinegar remedy works. I have told so many friends about that, and they are all amazed. It does sting a little at first, but if you keep putting it on, you will crave it because it will start to cool and soothe the skin. Also, if you start early enough and let it really soak in, you will NOT peel. It stinks, but if you are burned enough, you won't care as much about that. The burn will be gone the next day if you use enough vinegar and let it soak in the skin for hours. Good luck!
Aloe Aftersun lotion. It soothes the best!
hi J.,,,
give milk a try just rub it on with a cloth but easy you are sunburned .hope this helps
good luck L.
as a pale skinned , dumb teenager I got many a sunburn. Fastest solution is
Stand burned person in bathtub and pour vinigar on them ( avoid eyes) the vinigar pulls the sting out..then you can just apply aloe vera and such..soft cotton sheets feel better than scratchy towlels to lay on, as i'm sure you have noticed..
Stay hydrated and tylonol dosed.( I agree with the others.
No need to rinse off the vinigar if skin is too tender..but the stink can get annoying.
Seriously the vinigar takes the "burn out" then dealing with the color, skin moisturizing, and eventual peeling is handle-able.
Good Luck.
J.,
As a pale easy to burn person I have done this a time or two. Plain old shaving cream not the gel kind will help take the sting out and as others have suggested aloe from a plant. I have actually used several of the store bought items together. Good luck and I hope you all have some relief soon.
A.
Vingar, it really helps.
Dear J.,
You need to use the leaves off of the aloe vera plant. It's thick & gooey but it works great! It even takes away the redness. Just snap off a leaf & squeeze it onto the burn - just spread it around. It works great on any kind of burn.
The stuff in the bottle is just not the same. Good luck!
C.
My neighbor swears by apple cider vinegar--you have to take a bath with it--yuck--but her grandkids were sun burnt pretty bad and it took the sting out. If you are near a health food store get the stuff with "the mother" in it--supposedly it works better. It is kind of expensive, but if it relieves the pain. The regular still works, but not as well. Good Luck!!!
forget the aveeno bath stuff and dump 1/2 of a cylinder of oatmeal in the tub with water that is barley warm, stir well
stay in for quite a long while, leave it standing to re-enter
again later, just warm a little
for other ideas and info, call the poison control center or hotline
God Bless!
Hey J.,
Sorry to hear about your burn- being from Corpus Christi, I hope your trip will leave you with more memories than the burn.
The advice about the aloe vera plant goo is the best. This succulant grows all over the place down there for exactly that reason- but up here maybe you could look for it in a nursery. THe stuff in bottles is not the same and wont offer teh same degreee of relief as the stuff from inside the plant.
Wear loose fitting clothing to give yrou skin some room to breathe and keeping it from any more sun exposure
Hope to have helped.
M.
Try the Ocean Potion blue Burn relief, it has Lydocaine in it to help dull the pain and it is very cooling. I burn ALL the time and use it EVERY time! I know, I just don't learn to use sunscreen, lol.
We used to live overseas and all of these ideas we used, but one more too...a tea bath, but it has to happen within the first 24 hours. Just regular tea in the water.
Good luck...we've been peeling from going to the water park and the Tylenol actually has helped a lot.
Hi J.,
Sorry to here of your sunburn dilemma. I don't know if you have every used any Mary Kay products but they actually have products for the sun now. They have an absolute wonderful aftersun gel. It is very cooling and takes the sting out almost immediatley, it also moisturizes the skin while it heals. I am very faired skined and burn very easily, when I am I in the sun I keep it with me just in case. I don't know if you may already have a consultant or know anyone who sells Mary Kay, but I am a consultant. I would love to help you and your family. If you are interested you can actually place an order online at my website at www.marykay.com/hrpowell, I would be happy to deliver the product to you. I hope this gives you some relief.
Thank you,
H. P.
Try Bullfrog, it really works!
I know how you feel! My husband and I got cooked (he was worse than I) in Cancun at the end of July. The only thing I can suggest is lots of Aloe Vera gel or cream or straight Aloe. Vit E cream might help too.
Drink lots of liquids (water or Gatoraid) and rest. He was sick that night we got burned & we both stayed in bed unable to move. Just keep your body hydrated and don't do anything strenuous!!! Good Luck!
Remember to drink 8 - 10 glasses of water every day. room or tap tempurature, not iced. When you are burnt like that you can dehydrate easily and you cells need lots of water to regenerate.
Take some tylenol for pain and mom tryed vanilla on us once. We had the clear kind not the brown stuff. Sorry your red! Get well soon.
Hi J.,
Ouch!! I've done that one too many times in my lifetime!
My Mom used to use Vinegar to soothe our sunburns. I think she would put it in a basin with a little bit of water (mostly vinegar) and use a soft sponge or soft cloth to dab the burned areas.
I hope this helps!!
Hang in there,
M.
Tomball, TX
put vinegar on it. Dab it on with a a soft rag or cotton balls. Doesn't smell so great but it works...
Hi J.
Sorry to hear of your sunburn. I have a fantastic product called After-Sun replenishing Gel with Mary Kay cosmetics that takes the sting away instantly. It is a great product for sunburn and dry skin. Feel free to view the product on my website at www.marykay.com/slarsen444. You may also call me in Austin at ###-###-#### and I can probably get it to you today! I live in Onion Creek which is south. If you live way North or something, you can go to Marykay.com and do a zip search for your area and find a consultant closer. Good Luck!
Regards, S. Larsen
The same thing happened to my family and the fastest relief i got was from plain old vinegar it smells a sec but quickly goes away. put in a spray bottle and when it touches the skin it act immedialty takens the burn out reapply as often as need about every couple of hours and continue to use that aloe gel because the vinegar will dry the skin and cause it to peel. If you dont mind the peeling then dont worry about. I hope this helps you
