Oops in the Bathroom

My three year old has been potty trained for a couple months now and was doing great so she has been in underware all the time but bedtime for awhile. Just recently she started having poop accidents. Not a full accident but a little in the underware. As soon as it happens I put her on the toilet thinking she will finish her BM but nothing. Then a couple hours later she will have another accident. Same thing a little poopy. She gets so upset when it happens so I know it is a true accident (still trying to convince my husband of that. He thinks she is just being lazy) Well today it happened at pre-school. I felt horrible for her. The teacher didn't tell me awhole lot like how she felt or what she was doing when it happened but I am sure it is like any other time. Why do you think this is happening all of a sudden? It is not loose which I first I thought was the case because she does eat ALOT of fruit and raw veggies so I cut back on fruit and juice hoping it would help but she still does it everyday. It is never a full BM but enough to ruin her underware. Any ideas of what I can do to get her back on track?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you SO much for the help. I looked up the Encopresis in children and it sounds like what she has to a T. She has always had issues with constipation even as a baby. She eat a diet very high in fiber and even takes fiber suplements but somehow she still has a tough time. When I pushed a little on her tummy she was telling me owie owie so I know I have my answer. I am taking her to her ped. tomarrow and hopfully they can clean her out and will probably have her see a pediatric gastro (she has seen one before) THis is why I love this site! I never would have known that this is what is going on and it could have gotten worse. You guys probably saved me a trip to the ER. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

If she doesn't have a full bm she could be constipated and the little bit is the small amount that makes it's way around the large amount. She may be holding back because the feces is large and firm. You could give her Miralax to see if she'd have a full bowel movement.

The skid marks usually mean constipation. Try to find some ways to load her up with fiber. Also watch the juice. We finally had to cut out apple juice because it caused both kids to have tummy issues. I remember when my daughter was little and had a love for snackwell cookies. I didn't realize that those darn things had sorbitol or something in them that caused the runs. She loaded up on them and would be running with small streaks. I eliminated the cookies and she was fine. So also, look at everything that she is eating and drinking.

What Marda said. It happens to kids all the time although I'm a little puzzled because it sounds like she eats a lot of fiber. The Miralax can take awhile to figure out the right dosing though and can cause some loose, frequent stools at first, especially if they are backed up. When I used it on my son I put him back in pull-ups just for a day or two while the Miralax took effect.

I think that she has some liquidy poopie up in her bowels and a bit of a blockage of constipation. The liquid comes out around the constipation. She hasn't been able to get all of it out (a nice big poopie - you know how great that can be LOL!) so it's coming out in stages, but not the part that's causing the problem.

If I were you, I would give her Miralax, or if she will eat it, prunes. Put a diaper back on her and let it work all that stuff out. It will be messy, but worth it.

Meanwhile, she needs to be kept regular. She needs lots of fiber and a daily dose of prunes.

If this doesn't work, talk to her ped.

Good luck!

It is pretty common. Look up Encopresis in children. There are many reasons but laziness is not one of them and your H's anger will only make things worse. Tell him to back off. Miralax is good stuff. But ask your ped first.

I would also suspect Encopresis. I happens fairly regularly in recently potty trained kids. I would suggest checking with your doctor.
