My daughter is almost 14 months and has had terrible diarrhea for the last four days. We took her to the doctor today and he said there is a bug going around, other than the diarrhea she was okay (no fever or dehydration) and to call back in a couple days if it continued. I was hoping other moms could give me advice on any food I can give her to possibly help. The doc suggested bread and other fibers, but that has not worked so far. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!
I asked for advice on this subject a few months back when my three had some bug for about two months. My ped. told me to get them a happy meal at McDonalds. She said the grease would coat things and make things bind. Hopefully also takeing the bug with it but no promises.

I don't remember the age, but my daughter had consistent diarrhea and accompanying diaper rash when she was teething heavily. The older wiser daycare lady said it was from all the extra saliva? You could try more binding foods, like bananas, cereals, dairy?

Hi Shay-
Stay away from any dairy products. They can truly make it worse. Like others have said below, the BRAT diet is good. Also, she may not want a whole lot to eat, which is pretty normal, but you might also try some oatmeal. It is fiber rich and can help with the diarrhea. My daughter loves it. I am referring to regular oatmeal, not toddler oatmeal. And just try to get her to take in fluids. Good luck

I have 4 kids and what has worked for me is cheese and cottage cheese. You really can only give it if they can handle it (tummy is not tender). Cottage cheese is easier to digest and seems to help diarrea in my little ones.

hi shay,
I understand what u r going thru. Best thing is to start giving her this carrot puree to begin with, it is easily digested by weak stomach. if she coul take it for one meal small give her a bowl of apple puree/ pear puree, if that is also taken up slowly add plain regular oats one tea spoon at a time in the abv mentioned two pure. likewise you may make stew of veg /nonveg with mild herb flavours and mash in some boiled potatoes , is she shows improvement. This is how i wd feed my daughter now 4 1/2 yrsld....carrot puree has fibers and required lightness on stomach to help in dihearea. you may also try squash, gourd, zucchini, ridge gourd these veggies are lifht to digest....
Since 14 month kid is still small to understand the imp of chewing properly, i prefer to give pureed food till she improves and then gradually make it corse and chunkiesas she improves.
hope this helps.

B.

Hi Shay B,
My son had diarrhea for three weeks and I know what your going through. We started warming up his milk and only gave it to him when he really needed it. Bannanas, brown rice, plain crakers, and warm tea (no sweetners). Worked out for us. So, I hope it works!

I'm a grandma but when my kids were little and had that problem I would scrape the inside of an apple and feed it to them. Applesauce does not work. For some reason when you scraped the apple it worked.
When they were babies, my mother in law said she used to boil rice and have them drink rice water. My kids would not do it, but I tried.

Hi shay I don't know if they sell this or if you will be able to even get it here. But back home (hawaii) we usually gave our kids concentrated guava juice. Even better if you could get the real fruit itself. But I have never seen guava fruit here. Try to see if you can get her the frozen concentrate guava juice like the frozen orange. That should help her some. hope you can find it and it helps her poor baby.

Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. If course you can do crackers, bread, rice cereal, etc.
To help with hydration, JELLO, pop sickles.
Cheese is also known to thicken things up.
Good luck - it's not a fun situation.

Hi Shay. I read your request and just had to respond. I don't specifically have a solution to your daughter's awful diarrhea, but wanted to suggest something for the diaper rash that's bound to happen because of it.
You absolutely HAVE to try Arbonne's Baby Care Herbal Diaper Rash Cream. It is the best out there! My son was having back-to-back sinus and ear infections when he was about 18 months old and was on major antibiotics. It made him have severe diaper rash. He was completely red and raw with open sores on his poor, little bottom. He screamed whenever I tried to change him. It was so sad. Then a friend suggested I try Arbonne's Diaper Rash Cream. Not only did it clear the diaper rash up within 24 hours, it prevented him from getting another one even on the antibiotics! If you'd like to try a free sample, please let me know. You can also check it out online at: www.mandyolsen.myarbonne.com. Good luck. I feel your pain.
I've also included some info about this product below. Hope this helps!
Arbonne Baby Care (ABC) Herbal Diaper Rash Cream: A light, water-repelling cream to gently relieve baby of sore, dry, chapped skin that can occur with diaper use. This gentle formula helps to prevent this condition before it occurs.
Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, avocado and peach
Skin Types: Baby, children, plus extremely sensitive

I brought him to the doctor thinking he had intestinal problems.. Well I wish you luck I have been there for sure and i know it is really trying.

Just make sure she is hydrated that is the biggest thing! Also you can try Pediasure to get her the nutrition she needs. I always gave my kids yogurt, bananas, toast when they had bouts of diarrhea. The main thing is hydration, whether she thinks she is thirsty or not. My kids did not like Pedialyte so I would water down slightly Gatorade.
Yogurt can help with the digestive system too so maybe some of that.

Hi,
I'm sorry that you are having this issue. My daughter had a similiar virus or bug at that age. We gave her banannas and bread. It is hard because if they are sick they won't eat much anyway.
Good luck I hope she gets well soon. It will pass!

Hi there! My daughter had rotavirus once and what worked really well for her was jello and popsicles (has electrolytes in it just like pedialyte - just cheaper!). Another trick was to mix white rice with yogurt - I guess the white rice is supposed to be a binding agent. It worked really well for us...

When my daughter was younger she had the same sickness often. I dont know if your doctor told you but only feed her green veggies, all other colored veggies make it worse, and only apples and bananas for fruit. I think that bananas work the best. I always stuck to bread, rice, apples/applesauce, and bananas and nothing else until she has solid stools. If she gets a diaper rash from it, I recommend Dr. Smith's diaper creme. It is the best for diarrhea. Good luck to you.

Hi, there is definately a bug going around. My 13 month old daughter had the same thing. To help with the diarrhea we took our daughter off all dairy products for about 48 hours. I had read somewhere that when kids had diarrhea their bodies sometimes have problems digesting dairy. We kept her hydrated with Pedilite and water, stayed away with fruit starting with the letter 'P' and pushed the fibers. After the 48 hours we slowly reintroduced dairy products back into her diet and other then 1 small blowout her diarrhea went away. Hope this helps.

when this happened to my daughter, on the doctor's advice we bought an anti-diarrheal formula made by the people who manunfacture Similac. It's called Isomil DF soy formula for diarrhea and I know CVS used to carry it.
It's miserable when they are this little and have the runs, but keeping baby hydrated is the most important thing to do.
Our doc told us there was no cause for alarm unless the runs were over 7 times per day - but babies get dehydrated awfully quickly so it's good to be sure they have enough fluid.
The Similac really worked fast and helped clear up the diarrhea. Good luck and hope little one feels better soon.

You are SO not going to believe this one...
1/2 coke
1/2 water
salt
(for my son, I only gave him 1 oz total of this mix)
A friend of mine learned this trick when she was on tour in Europe with no modern conveniences nearby. When she recommended I try it, I thought "no way!" I'm not going to give my 3 yr old sugar & caffeine. What could this possibly do to solve his diarrhea that all the food & drinks couldn't do?
Well, after 6 days of nothing but water in his diaper, I finally tried it. Later that day, his first stool was still loose but there was no more diarrhea... no more water, no more mucous. It's as if he needed this jolt to kick start his intestinal functions. He had gotten over the illness - the fever was gone, his activity level was increasing but he still wouldn't eat b/c every time he brought anything to his mouth he would have to poop. After 3 days of not eating, he had nothing left to poop. Then, it was as if his body was hyper reactive... almost as if he had dry heaves. Anyway, on the 6th day, I tried this and the diarrhea immediately resolved itself. It probably took another 2-3 days to get back to normal but at least he was comfortable enough to start eating again, which also helped bring things back to normal.
It's darn near unbelievable, I know. But after seeing how it helped him, it's something I will certainly remember for the future.
Good luck!

Also i don't know if your baby girl likes pedialight. Mine did not, so i gave him either frozen pedialights-they look like popsickles, or getorate to prevent dehydration

My little guy had the same bug, and his diarrhea lasted for six days. No fun for him, and no fun for mom and dad! Unfortunately he didn't want to eat much the first few days he was sick, so we pushed lots of Pedialyte to help prevent dehydration. I also nursed him as often as he wanted, and gave him formula in between. We kept him away from fruits and juice as they cause loose stools (and he didn't need any more loose stools!). He ate oatmeal, rice cereal and yogurt, and then we slowly started reintroducing veggies when he got through the worst of the illness.
Good luck - this bug is a yucky one!

Offer unlimited fluids---give water or 1/4 strength Kool-Aid or 1/2 strength Gatorade. Avoid all fruit juices and soft drinks---it will make the diarrhea worse.
Starchy foods are absorbed best. Give dried cereals, oatmeal, bread, crackers, noodles, mashed potatoes, rice, carrots, applesauce, bananas, yogurt etc. Pretzels or salty crackers can help meet sodium needs.
You can also give 2-6 oz. of active culture yogurt twice a day to restore healthy bacteria to GI tract.
Best wishes.

I have heard rice water works well. Make a small pot of non-instant rice and before it is done cooking take some of the water out. I think the starches in from the rice help bind things up and the H2O will keep her hydrated.
Also probiotics (Acidophilus, bifidus, etc.)you can find in the regrigerated wupplement section of the natural food store. They come in capsules - I separate the capsule and add half of the powder to applesause, smashed banana, or yogurt (it is the bacteria in most yogurt but a higher dosage) 2 times per day. This helps restore the natural bacteria in the stomach and intestines and will help her system get back to normal.
All the other advice seems good too!

Hello Shay,
My kids are a bit older than your's but I have been through this. I remember when my son had this problem, I gave him cheese. Any kind of cheese and it took about a day but it cleared right up. I found for my son that the little block cheeses work best. You can cut them into little cubes. I think Kraft has a type that is already cut into cubes so that would be very convenient. Good luck!
