G.H.
do you have some cheese to go with your whine, lol
If I were you I would be thanking God on how fortunate you are to not have to endure a hurricane, even without a novelty such as AC
I really just need to whine.
Spent all morning preparing for Issac - and while is it flooding and rainy in some areas, my neighborhood is high, dry, and has power.
Oh, but my central air conditioning decided to just stop working today. Just kerflewy. So, Hurricane but electricity STILL equals no AC. My maintenance guys are busy on calls or taking care of their homes - which I expected and knew but I still called them to whine this afternoon. So, most likely no AC until maybe Thursday after work or Friday. Ah, we do have an attic fan - the saving grace of this old house, and with the windows open it is bearable.
I don't do enforced down time well it seems. Knowing that this is going to drag on through tomorrow - the thought is driving me crazy. Yes, I could do more housework - but at this point I think I am saving that for tomorrow by which point mopping and steam cleaning the floors will sound like a joy.
The weather is really too bad to go anywhere, and all the anywheres are closed anyway.
I do have wine to go with my whine.
Any suggestions on what to do?
Thank you for even reading part of this self centered diatrabe.
Oh, I know how lucky we are. I know I sound like an ungrateful little sot. I am sorry.

Glad your area is okay.
Okay, let's see, what to do w/your down time other than clean?
How about some reading?
Write your Christmas cards early so they'll be ready to go.
Make your Christmas list out (the gifts you have to buy each person).
Plan your next party.
Clip coupons.
Put together a puzzle.
Take a word (a long one) and see how many words you can make out of that one word.
Plan your next family trip.
Have wine & cheese by candle light.
I understand and remember that well. Along with the guilt for feeling like whining....that's just the little cherry on top. Can you host a hurricane party or go to one? Do y'all do that in MS?
When I lived in South LA (between Baton Rouge and New Orleans), we had parties or went to them and it made all the difference in the world. Everyone would bring sleeping bags, ice chests/food/drinks, a friend would play his guitar and the kids would drum on buckets with different amounts of water, we'd sing, play games, eat, do whatever. We'd even plan it a few days ahead and have a jambalaya or gumbo that everyone chipped in for. Of COURSE we made hurricanes to drink and virgin daquiris (any color BUT red b/c we didn't want drinks getting mixed up) for the kids. The friends or family around made it a lot more entertaining and if that storm was something to be nervous about, at least you wouldn't be nervous alone. Make sure buckets and the tub have water in case you lose water----extra "toilet needs" with no water would not be a good thing. Those were always fun, made us feel close. Kinda like a Thanksgiving day without the stress and pressure of making a huge feast.
If you aren't going to do a hurricane party, while you still have power and water, you could make sure all your laundry is done and iron all your clothes (in case water or electricity goes out a few days and you still have to go to work), read a book, play some games with the kids (wiffle ball paddles or ping pong paddles, batting a balloon around, with the coffee table or whatever as the "net" goes over great in our house)...also the normal stuff like charades, pictionary, board games or card games (even by candlelight, this is nice to slow down and hang with the family a bit), just talking.....scrapbooking, try your hand at some hobby or something you've been putting off. Candlelight kinda "dresses up" a ham & cheese or pbj sandwich in an amusing way. Keep your windows open and at least get a little breeze....hopefully this will pass through pretty easily and you'll be able to get some AC before the heat/humidity sets in. Take care!
Stay safe! I'm thinking about all you along the Gulf Coast...... that's a big storm coming in!
lol love your post. Sorry about your A/C. No cold air anywhere in the South can drive even the sanest person batty.
Call me weird but I go OCD on my house during impending natural disasters. I always imagine the roof being torn off or something and then the thought of various first responders trapsing through my home looking for survivors makes me feel like I have to keep a clean and organized house in case it shows up on the news or something. yes, I know, if the roof is blown off everything will get messed up anyway and yes, I know, I should care more about the safety of my family (which I do) than how clean my house is. But again, I know its weird and I'm willing to live with that :)
Take care LB and be safe!
I felt that way last year when Irene hit the east coast. Barely a tree branch down in our neighborhood, no loss of power, no flooding, nothing.
But then in the following weeks, I watched the new stories about the awful devastation less than a half hour away, that they STILL haven't recovered from.
Then after I stopped feeling guilty (psh, call this a storm?), I started feeling blessed (Thank GOD that didn't happen to MY house).
And so will you tomorrow.
:)
