Just wondering, how long until a six-year old with newly pierced ears can wear sterling silver?

Thanks,
W. R.

Be really careful with earrings! My daughter had her ears pierced a couple of months back. She was wearing the post earrings that lock into place. Well, it got locked so tight that the front of the earring got embedded in her ear and started to create a huge hole in her lobe. We took her to the ER and the doctor said it happens WAY more than you imagine. 20 minutes, lots of screaming and tears, and 2 stitches later, they got the earring out. The doctor said that for small kids especially, do NOT use the post earrings, especially the ones that lock. The safest kind of earrings are hoops. The sooner you can get her into them, the better.

At least 6 weeks with the piercing studs. The posts are extra wide so if you put in new earring too soon, it will cause the hole to get smaller and then it will close more easily and be painful when switching earrings.

I have had pierced ears for about 15 years, and I still can't wear any earrings that have silver or nickel in them. There really isn't a set time for trying it, although I would wait at least until her ears are completely healed [I think they usually say at 6 or 8 weeks you can remove the studs]. She may be sensitive no matter what

What ever they told you when you had them pierced (as to how long before you could try to take out the earings and replace them- is that like 6 weeks or two months?) Then you just have to try to find out what will work for her. Some people are really sensitive to nickel, and I think that is a pretty big offeder, so just be cautious once she trys new things because the nickel content can be high, even in gold.

Hi W.,
Well, I would think that if you guys don't really have an allergy to certain metals you could do it right at 7 weeks, as long as her ears healed ok.
My daughter actually had problems with the gold studs she was pierced with, but we still waited until 6 weeks then changed them. I couldn't tell if it was the earrings or just her ears taking longer to heal. But when we did switch at 6 weeks, we used the Blomdahl medical grade plastic earrings just to be safe. Right when we switched, she cleared up beautifully. They're a little pricey I think, but they're our go to earrings when there is any infection/irritation and it ALWAYS clears right up. We also did some salt soak on her ears too, and that always seems to help whenever there's any sort of irritation for her. I think my daughter actually has a harder time with gold. She usually does fine with silver. It's just hard because you wont really know until they're in for a bit.

Here is the website that I found the earrings, just in case :)

Go with stainless steel. It looks just like silver, and will prevent any issues with irritation.

I think it would depend on if she has an allergy to them. My daughter is highly allergic to anything but gold. Keep her ears clean (front and back) and if they start itching her, you'll have to remove them and replace them with a gold pair.
