N.H.
Never wake a sleeping child but be sure to check on her often. I never believed in waking an infant every two hours to feed them, etc. When they are hungry they'll wake up. Babies need their rest too.
I have a 2 month old and she has been sleeping through the night. yeah!!
Just wondering how many hours in a 24 hr period should she be awake?

On average, Doctors say from 2-4 months, babies should sleep around 15-16 hours a day, with 3 naps during the day. All babies are different. I think my son was sleeping about 8 hours at night around 2 months and so he would have 3 naps during the day usually from 1-2 hours long. I am a Babywise mom who believes in scheduling and routine. My son is 9mo old now and he sleeps 11 hours at night with 2 naps during the day. When they are 2 months old, sleeping and eating basically takes up their day!
Just follow her cues and she'll be fine!
Let her sleep!!! The more your baby sleeps the happier she will be! Trust me, when our little one was born, (she's 9 months now and into everything) we thought if we kept her up or woke her during the day it would be okay but eventually it back fired, she would never sleep because she was over tired. Then once my baby started getting all her sleep it made her a much happier baby. Especially at two months old, she needs alot of sleep because they are growing at such rapid rates. Enjoy the time you have while she is asleep and get lots of rest yourself, there may come a day when you'll need it. :) Congrats on you new little girl!
A book to check out is Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth MD. Great resource!!!
Kelly-
She'll be awake around the time of her feedings and changes- other than that, in my experience, there are no shoulds- she'll do whatever she needs to do. She's just your little appendage- that will make her happiest in the long run :-)Enjoy your sleep, you lucky woman! S.
Hi Kelly,
I think you're going to get a lot of very different answers to this one. It will depend on a lot of things going on in how you personally care for your baby, your home, your family, etc.
Sleep charts are a great start, but should not rule the universe you live in.
I'm, personally, a schedule-mom. Once my babies started sleeping through the night, at 11 and 8 weeks (10 to 11 hrs at a time), they were still getting 1.5 to 2 hrs of sleep every 3 hours; Once they got around 18-24 weeks old, we went to 2 hr naps every 4 hours (and my 11 month-old still takes three 1.5 - 2hr naps daily): babies need a lot of sleep, and it does wonders for brain development. (I'm an OT, so I'm big on that stuff - ha, ha)
Congrats on getting your little one sleeping through!!
