J.,

Since I HATE to waste food and I had 2 plums and 2 nectarines that were overripe. I pitted them (skin-on)and put them in a small saucepan. I added a bit of water, sugar, and lemon juice (all to taste since it was an experiment) and allowed them to simmer, mashing them all-the-while. I then made a batch of basic pancakes and used the concoction instead of syrup. It was delicious!! (While simmering, it tasted quite sweet, but on the pancakes it could have been a little sweeter. If you decide to try this, keep in mind what you'll be using it for and add a bit more sugar or a bit less.) Happy cooking!

Look on the internet for recipes for fruit crumble--I had a tree full of apricots that I needed to use. I tried different recipes and took them to dinner parties. Kind of fattening, though! You can also add them to oatmeal muffins and reduce the liquid in some other way--really good! My husband took a lot of apricots to work, too. People loved it! There also might be a cold soup you can make from fruit--check the internet. And middle eastern dishes often have fruit--chicken, onion, garlic, spices, tomatoes and fruit.

I agree- plum jelly is yummy. I haven't really made other fruit items with them.

Hi J.,

Have you tried making plum jam? Plum jam can be stored in canning jars for months. There's a variety of way to use plum jam. It's a delicious spread on toast. You can use it to marinate meat for grilling, sauce for dipping (sweet and sours sauce), salad dressing, add it to teas for a fruity flavor and also for baking.

I don't have specific recipes. Have a great time experimenting.

Throw them in a smoothie machine or even a blender with other fruits, juice and ice, and make smoothies. They are best if they are a bit over ripe as the juices are stronger and give the smoothies better flavor.

My plum tree was very abundant this year too. I made tons of jam, plum sauce (just put the plums in a pot with a little bit of sugar if necessary and eat like apple sauce with yogurt, or alone), plum pies, crumbles and cakes. You can also freeze the fruit to make desserts at a later date. The latest issue of Fine Cooking has lots of recipes for plum desserts also, which you might be able to consult on the Web as the magazine is expensive.
